Yeah, this. I was definitely unaware of this. I think it's mainly because I never see GAF being brought up anywhere outside of GAF. To look for the hate, you kind of have to seek it out on other sites.

So by making moderation even more murky overall and instituting even more draconian rules on content they're opening things up? Again, the site was shut down and half of it closed down because of the in real issues and poor response of the owner followed by a myriad of changes, bans and thread closings, none of which had anything to do with him or his personal problems. Why am I expecting things to get better after a stunt like that?

There is only 1/4 that's not visible at the moment though.

Hopefully the new mods aren't as sensitive. I think with the old posters gone it has given rise to Juniors not being afraid to post as much, I lurked and never posted outside of gaming because I didn't wan't to lose my account over something petty/taken out of context.

In lieu of the controversy, the mods gave themselves more anonymity (and by virtue, less transparency) and have continued to censor links to gaming communities that have splintered from GAF. It's business as usual, and if EviLore were reading this thread, which he probably isn't because he hasn't shown much interest in community feedback before and with the statement in OP he's definitely still in a bubble of his own beliefs, he'd probably tell you like always, there's other places on the internet.

Invite only is to make sure people from the discord communities get in first to stress test + making sure it wont be swamped by 4chan/voat in the early days

I'm not defending Gaf. Reset Era was created for a reason, and tip-toeing around discussion of that is a bad way to go. The forum needs a mega thread so that they can talk about Gaf, it's something that needs to be discussed.

Again why am I expected to trust someone after such a stunt? Its not even a matter of whether EviLore did or not but how he responded in quite possibly the worst way possible outside of just closing the thing down forever and deleting everything before flying the coup.

I don't know, but I imagine having a presumably large portion of the userbase vanish overnight could be what was required for them to start taking feedback on board more seriously.

If that happened to me I'd want to make sure any remaining and future users were satisfied before they're also led away to competing sites.

Maybe things will just carry on as they did before. But I think it's worth a try. I don't think anybody thought NeoGAF was perfect but not even being free to express that wasn't helpful for anyone.

"Steal". NeoGAF doesn't own it's users, even if some behave like they owned by the moderation.

We're free to use any site we want. If a site is more attractive e.g. through an active userbase people may choose to migrate.

Yeah, history hasn't exactly filled many with faith, but with the other forum being opened today, there is more of a threat now than there ever has been before. I was going to say now there is healthy competition in the forum space, but I don't know if healthy would be the right word!

People are still calling for Evilore to step down but I'm still not sure if that's a good idea.

In a twist of irony, I'm reminded of Nintendo and the Iwata years. Not saying the situation is 1:1, but I'm reminded of the talk of Iwata stepping down or Nintendo as a whole going third party.

Despite how much he [Iwata] screwed up, any drastic change in how Nintendo always operates would prove disastrous. Especially in the game industry where you're replacing a man who isn't a corporate suit but a gamer whereas the replacement would be someone who only sees the money.

I think Evilore turning down the million dollar offer for the site reflects that. He wants to see the site thrive at all costs. Had he given up ownership, whoever would be in charge during a disaster would either kill the site or make the user experience even worse, like placing ads in every post or desperately seeking out sponsors.

I like that trusted leadership that has existed all these years. Even in spite of all the accusations and problems. If Evilore is gone, there is no guarantee whoever takes over understands the culture of the site and would prefer to monetize the hell out of it until it's a dried up cow.
