It finally happened!! I got my PSVR last night, it almost didn't happen though, BestBuy was sold out, not only within my local store but for the Skyrim bundle but at all the BestBuy's within my area. Went to Walmart and grabbed the last one, all that really mattered is if it goes on sale I have the price guarantee and can take the receipt in and get the difference back and I was really set on this bundle. I had a blast though, played most of what was on the included demo disc 2, "Moss" as heavily recommended as it came from several people within this thread is also now on order after playing the demo.
My Initial Thoughts;
Having tried both the Oculus Rift and the PSVR previously but both only for a short time, my expectations have been exceeded to the full submersion that the depth of each game can provide in any given world. If I'm being super objective, the resolution obviously isn't close to the 4K/HDR setup I have through my PS4 Pro but this is forgiven as you actually feel like you're entering each world and leaving your living room behind. Honestly I feel like a kid, playing games for the first time and its a feeling I haven't felt in years.
I remember reading somewhere in this thread that the price point should be dropped to further this tech to the masses (maybe $250.00) and I agree with that statement completely. I feel this would grab a whole new user base as this is just too unique of an experience to let dry up and leave unsupported. I'll also say at $449.99 CAD for this bundle, I still feel like I got my monies worth and won't regret this purchase.
I've noticed the physical games are very scattered in terms of availability, pricing and importing as I had to buy both Paranormal Activity & Moss online, I've had to import Superhot VR from the UK, a physical copy of Job Simulator is crazy expensive (although I got a good deal well below what you'll see it for online) and thats even IF the game has a physical copy available. I would hope that Sony makes everything abit more standard as far as physical releases. I do appreciate most price points MSRP at $29.99 CAD if you're grabbing something around the release date and I realize I'm late to the party and some of these games were super cheap originally. It makes the collector in me think that some of these games (if you own a physical copy) will be worth something one day. I don't really buy into I'm too lazy or its too much of a hassle to get up and change the disc because for me personally I'll take a quick break in between as I do that.
Last night after getting setup, which wasn't as hard as I expected. I got into having played abit of Moss, Battlezone, Eve Valkyie, Star Child and Thumper from the Playstation VR demo collection 2 and then trying out Skyrim just before bed it actually felt like I was high experiencing a bunch of new games like that for the first time.
Battlezone reminded me of the tank battles in Tron with how everything was so brightly coloured, the interior detail in the tank was pretty detailed as well. Star Child although it was simple and very tech demo like, the way the visuals were presented gave me a glimpse of what a proper side scroller could actually be in VR. I didn't overly enjoy Eve Valkyie, I didnt like the in-game view and lacked the flash and detail of the interior of the Battlezone tank, maybe it was just an early version? Thumper was just fast fun, also very tech demo and techno like, rhythmic with each set of inputs as you progressed. Moss was definitely the standout of the bunch, right from the menu screen looking like the main hall in Hogwarts, the whole forest, the lighting, the way I tilted my headset in to look at the mouse and it reached up to me, it was all just amazing.
Once I finally got to playing Skyrim after the updates, playing through the opening scenes as I was transported with the other prisoners for my sentencing, being IN Skyrim, looking up at the sky as the dragon started to created chaos, thats just one of those things I wont ever forget as a gamer.
I can't wait to sink my teeth into more VR, to play more of whats on order for me personally, to play with the move controllers I charged up before bed last night when I get home tonight after work. To see what the future holds for the genre as the games get better, as the masses start to adopt this engaging new style of play rather than dismissing it as a gimmick or a phase, sorry for rambling on but I'm pretty amped up right now.
