Surprising lack of bans, but then most of those people no longer post there anyway.
There are a few notable folks there who are still pretty active like excelsiorlef, but I definitely don't recognize many of the others. Maybe the jump to a new "home" wasn't as important as it seemed to them at the time.

First you agree to stop pointing out ResetEra's stupidity and craziness because "it's beneath us".

Then you agree to stop making fat jokes because "it's offensive."

Then you stop admitting to being attracted to hot people because that's "sexist".

Then as you keep changing yourself to appease these strangers, more of them show up because you have emboldened them and given them power. They see you as weak now. They smell blood. They move in for the kill.

Then you wake up one day and realise your want to appear nice and normal to the rest of the internet has allowed this place to be infested with authoritarian hive-minded NPCs again.

Congratulations, you played yourself.

Be careful, brother and thank God we have Evilore. I know he won't let that happen again.

TL/DR: Appeasement doesn't work.

You're being overly dramatic. Some people are just more agreeable than others.

They offer some of the posters new accounts with no ties to their past accounts if they want a new start to keep them there.

I was pleasantly shocked that I was thought of someone of some note that they would offer me that treatment as a alternative to me leaving. I turned the offer down and thanked the person who offered it.

Some users there who were/are verified started to get some heat for some of their more out there posts with their employers so some changes needed to happen.

Oh umm.... speculations on my part, the parts that aren't facts of course. If that makes sense.

Now you made me feel bad - I wasn't even offered the door on my way out!

But seriously I do feel bad about my fellow warframers... we've been around since the ps4 launched.

I know the feeling. The Pokémon community that started here and went over to Era was pretty great. A lot of the regulars I was familiar with left Era or plan to leave Era shortly after SwSh launches. They all are going their separate ways. For me, I'm slowly trying to unhook myself from gaming forums and reliance/time spent on the Internet.

Moving back over to Gaf to do that made more sense because of how laid back this forum has become. I don't feel paranoid or a need to constantly have my guard up every time I post something here.

I don't know what requirements they have for offering a new unrelated accounts to users who wants to leave their site. I was never part of their in crowd and been banned a few times myself. I had all of their protected users on my ignore list and I'm sure they could've seen that.

I see comments in here saying that Era is dying or is at the very least circling the drain.

I disagree..

That site has legitimacy.. like it or not it has industry support. Devs post there, leakers post there, and gaming "journalist" post there. They give that site credibility and in turn they attract more and more new users.

The site is bleeding old time users lets leak something and have our "journalists" friends cover it which creates more exposure for the site that will bring in new users. What? God of War is a game of the gen contender? Well it's director posts here from time to time.. the appeal of talking to devs directly is appealing enough for new users to join up.

Era's "legitimacy" is very surface level. It has about as much industry clout as a dedicated forum in 2019 can, which isn't much. Yes, people in the industry are members there, but they're also rarely active or just use the place as a tertiary advertising arm like Geoff Keighley who will post 3 times a year whenever the game awards come around and ignore every post calling him out over his friendship with people like Boogie. There's also this bizarre penchant for mods to hand out the Verified tag to people that have little to nothing to do with the industry, including people that work in IT.

Then there's the "battle" with new media in general. Era does have a few journalists on its side (though even Schreier will shit on the place), but any other example of new media seems to be at perpetual war with the place. Top Youtubers and Twitchers never pass their purity tests, so some either fight back or ignore it entirely and it ends up being a "I don't think about you at all" kind of thing. And that's before we get into the clusterfuck that is their opinion on reddit and twitter (where you can also talk directly to devs).

As for activity levels, Era is stagnant if not on a slight decline. That membership number on the front page will continue to go up, but the amount of active posters and unique posters over a 24 hour period is a fraction of that, generally capping out in the 6000 range. What this means is one of a few things. Big content generators are getting banned or going inactive, many of the new accounts are alts that will remain latent until necessary, or a good chunk of the site's content is generated by a very small percentage of the userbase (or a combination of all these). That latter one is key here. If a bulk of the site's posts are coming from the same 300-500 users out of 48k, you're not going to get organic growth. In fact, the need to cater to them will totally strangle any potential for growth in the first place. It will lead to an increasingly strict mindset as the bubble they build for themselves gets smaller and smaller until all but a handful are pushed out.

Does that mean the site is on its last legs? Nah, but it does mean the legs it does have are unstable and shaky and thin contrary to what they would have you believe. Without a massive controversy (and don't get me wrong, that could absolutely happen with the paranoia that kind of culture has generated), you're not going to see the site implode on itself. Instead, you'll see it slowly grow more and more irrelevant until its place in gaming discourse is all but non-existent, all the while its prominent users see nothing wrong with the insanity they buy into and truly believe their views are the norm.

This isn't all my opinion by the way. Anecdotal I know, but it isn't exactly an uncommon opinion in the industry from what I've heard. Enthusiast forums like that will always be semi-relevant for indies, but even many of them hate the place. The overton window of gaming sees them on the fringes, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon even if an article will cite them every once in a blue moon.

This is a good read and gave me something to consider.

I intend on posting less in this thread. My first post probably came off as me being a killjoy.

Thanks to all for the replies!... and the likes... that's still new to me.

I kind of took the conversation a different direction. Regardless of how that site is ran or how long until it's expiration date there's still some good people I know who post there so I don't want to do the resetera thing and generalize an entire site or group of people.

I agree completely. In fact, I'd say a good chunk of the userbase is that, even some of the active ones. The problem is they're being drown out by the very vocal people on the fringes that dominate discourse there, and because of that, it's a terrible environment for those good people, especially the ones with mental health issues. Because of that, I almost wish the site would die soon to kind of rip the band-aid off for them, as well as the people the seemingly malicious people that have found themselves in such a small bubble.

I'm not even saying this is a good place for them either. Frankly, I think in the current age forums are kind of dangerous in general unless they're super tiny. Though social media in general is kind of like that, so people are kind of screwed anyway as parasocial relationships continue to grow more and more toxic. Era is just looking at that kind of culture with a microscope, they didn't create it by any means.

It's just my take on resetera.

What they are doing and how they run that site is extremely dangerous for some of the mentally vulnerable users of that site.

Instead of banning or correcting people who show extreme hatred for those that don't fully agree with them or have some serious dangerous takes like calling a active shooter outside a immigrant holding center a Freedom Fighter and not a terrorist or supporting racism all in the name of progressive views is... not ok..

I'm going to post less in this thread. I don't like the idea of being a killjoy for those who likes to rag on Era. I find it humorous at times too. I just originally wanted to come in here and ask the more regular users if they would mind not to pop in random gaming threads just to take shots at Era.

Thanks to all for the replies!... and the likes... that's still new to me.

Welcome to the forum!

Personally I am not as active in this thread anymore because I simply don't care about them. At the same time I don't mind people taking shots at them either because often times people have evidences to show us why the purple swamp is a breeding ground of radical extremists and bigots disguised as feminists.

Raising awareness of them so less people get radicalized is a good thing. It took me 2 months(around Dec 2017) to realize that I was being brainwashed by them. People remain there are mostly a lost cause now since they have cut themselves off from the outside world without knowing they are just pawns in a political game.

Anyway can't wait for Pokemon Sword! Seems like the best Switch game this year.

Your statement might make sense if what I wrote didn't happen to GAF in exactly that fashion.

That makes it fact, not drama.

Probably fit more into the horror category, actually.

What happened on GAF was a consequence of agreeableness being enforced by the moderation, not because of "weakness" on the part of its community.

A lot of those mods got their positions due to appeasement. The enforcement happened after.

And yes, the community played a part in it. It always starts off innocently enough.

Anyway, doesn't matter because most of the crazies left and the normal people came back.

We just need to learn from our mistakes.

Prominent members should never be promoted to positions of authority. It's a recipe for disaster because of the social networks and hierarchies (whether real or perceived) involved. Mods should always be mostly anonymous and kinda just tinkering in the background without influencing the flow of discussion unless it gets severely off track.

Can you fucking imagine the representation needed for that game??

They should get Zoe Quinn to organize their crowdfunding and administer the money.

Is there a word to describe the feeling you get when you see someone make loud declarations about people being bad for liking a certain thing, and then when you on a whim decide to visit their publicly open twitter page that uses the same name as their forum handle and find out that they have stuff on their likes page that matches what they were condemning people for?

I discovered this before last time they had an anime thread and with the current one that popped up today I noticed the same person is still liking stuff that they're admonishing others for in that thread. I do not understand why someone would do that when you can see that stuff on their page in less than a minute, especially some particularly spicy pics that would probably end in a perm if their mods saw it.

Not giving out the name since my intent isn't to try and ruin someone. But this isn't the first time I have seen this kind of behaviour and I have no idea how it comes across to someone as a good idea.

i am thinking they would create something like Captain PLanet but instead of earth things the kids would have rings from various social media place and when they combine "Captain Social Justice" will punish all those incels

Off the top of my head the game would be
  • All the enemies would be straight white males
  • you would have bonus side scrolling shooter sections where you pilot your disabled black transgender muslim woman and blow up trump supporters
  • You have a special ability where you can stand there and screech and the enemies vanish
  • you get points for locking the straight white males in jail and dodging the evidence monsters
what else could they add in?

remember this is how 2 girls 1 cup was made...a simple joke and some funds got combined and the rest is internet folklore

Hypocrisy, deflection and projection. You've just found out what a lot of people outside of Era have noticed and screencapped about some of their more vocal members before.

I wonder how many of them are still active Reetards and how many of them are recently banned, but not for being an edgy shitlord, but just not aligning 100% with the narrow path that the mods accept 🤔

It's like they watch GAF and just copy everything done here.

What impresses me is where do they get the time to develop things if they dedicate their whole life to complain and getting offended. Props to them.

Now you made me feel bad - I wasn't even offered the door on my way out!

But seriously I do feel bad about my fellow warframers... we've been around since the ps4 launched.

Frogs. It's lox. I've pulled the pin over there too. I thought about saying some stupid shit and getting myself banned, but I didn't wanna be one of those guys. I really only hung out in the WF thread anyway, so I made a post there to say bye to the 2 people that may have cared and then logged out for good.

It was actually seeing that you were banned in the thread, that started me off on quite the eye opening journey on some of the shit that goes on over there elsewhere on the site. I checked your last couple of posts, which led me down quite the sordid path, and saw you weren't the only one being banned or silenced for not going with the group think. In fact, it was kinda outta control

I tend to stay out of controversial hot topics anyway, but seeing people banned for rationally presenting an argument that went against the grain (or in your case, just calling for some calm) was too much. A discussion board that doesn't allow for discourse seems more then a little counter intuitive.

So I'm back here now too. I guess I'm what people around here would consider a 'normie' who one day realised that he was hanging out in the middle of a seemingly brainwashed cult and didn't want a part of it. It's better here though. Slower, but better

Now, if only the Warframe thread had more then 2 posts in the last 6 months....

Bitmap Frogs Bitmap Frogs Cracklox Cracklox

Old OT's have a bit of a paradox. It's inactive because no one posts in it. No one posts in it because it's inactive.

I create a MLB The Show OT every year knowing it won't get a ton of traffic.

But if you want a Warframe active OT, my suggestion is that you request old one get locked. Build a new one for current players and encouraging people who stopped playing/never tried it to give it another go. Post it in Gaming Discussion. Current GAF appreciates passion a lot.

Hey lox!!!

Nice to see you around. Yeah, resetera is very concerned with ideological purity and curating a very politically charged experience. I too walked on eggshells for months ignoring the controversial threads but after the Etika situation I couldn't keep quiet anymore.

I was talking with Friz about setting up camp here and he seemed ok with us starting a thread and being part of the clan from here, but he was less inclined to change the name of the clan again.
