Microsoft forgot the value of exclusives, this poll's results are a reflection of that
You know what was interesting about the first Xbox?

Microsoft was able to capitalize on the PC ports. Its exclusives where games that were far too demanding to run on the PS2 and Gamecube (i.e Half Life 2 or Doom 3).

When Xbox 360 came out, that advantage disappeared. PS3/360 both got the same games. The 360 only had a slight advantage because that was the generation Sony screwed up their console.

Now look at PS4 vs XBO and once again, Microsoft barely has any of those "PC exclusives" anymore.

They needed to invest in their own software library, because multiplatform games are everywhere now.

Ill be going for both ASAP. Unless Sony's big games at launch are completely lame. I doubt that'll happen though.

PS5.
I'm open to Xbox if they make some games that interest me......but they haven't managed that once this gen, which is pretty impressive, lol.

PS5 for me, because i love it's environment like trophies and such. Also because i skipped the One and have all my friends and games on PS3/PS4/PSP/PSVita.
So im hoping for a complete backwardscompatibility

XsX only. I had a PS4 for a while this gen and found I'm just not a fan. I didn't like PS itself, the dashboard, the OS, the hardware quality and I didn't love the games the way Sony fans do other than Horizon Zero Dawn. Also I absolutely hated the controller.

It's disheartening how they left Rare to die. Sure, they may not have the same magic they did on the N64, but it's still an important brand name in the gaming world.

Their best game this generation was literally a compilation. What is MS doing with them?

I'll get a PS5, it's a given unless they try some shit like Microsoft did prior to releasing the One. I'm slightly open to the next gen MS console but I need to see some games. Revive some franchises, refresh your line up. Think about those who don't enjoy Halo and Gears. I like the look of the Forza games but they are not enough alone for me to buy the console.

XSX. Still a big fan of Gears of War and I'm pretty sure all the Rockstar/Bethesda games are going to be multi-platform. Then a lot of my other gaming needs are satisfied by my Nintendo Switch with Zelda and Mario games. What more could I possibly need? There are several games I have yet to complete this generation.

PS5 for me. They've got the franchises I like. I started gaming on the original Xbox, but I've lost faith in MS over the past decade, so they'll have to win me back. They might do that if the new Fable and the Initiative game turn out well, although I doubt we'll see those games in the next couple years. In the meantime, and for the entire generation, MS hasn't shown me anything I wanted to play. So, PS5.

I'm in the "neither" category. For a history of my prior preferences (no dead manufacturers included):

Sony: PS2, PS3, PS4
MS: Xbox, Xbox One, Xbox One X
Nintendo: Basically everything
PC: Heavy MS-DOS early 90's gamer, '03-'13 gamer

I'm going to PC/Nintendo with the next generation. Sony first party quantity is dying (not arguing quality), Xbox first party isn't that great and will be available on PC the few times it is, third parties can easily port to PC now so no reason to have a dedicated console.

Gotta have my Nintendo tho.

I see you're massive Nintendo fan mate

Haha it's all I currently own outside of PC, I gave my PS4 to my father so he had something to occupy him when he got out of the hospital. I always have preferred Sony exclusives though, I think I had an Xbox for about a week.

I think both are going to be a bit more expensive than expected in order to have both. If PS5 has backwards compatibility, it's a no brainer. Even if it doesn't, still going PS5.

Neither for a while. At least how I feel now. I can play Halo infinite on the One X, and I'm waiting on PS5 unless I get a Resistance game at launch. i also do not like the DualShock controller. I'll own both eventually, but I have a One X a PS4 Pro and a Switch. why rush?

Yeah, I think a lot of people will feel the same. I expect this gen's sales to take off slower than last, because of the comparatively short time since the last console release/upgrade.

I think this is the thinking behind Lockhart as well. The price, unless one of them are willing to take a serious loss, is going to be $499. That alone will stop some from upgrading.

With Microsoft finally making a true commitment to PC gaming there is no compelling reason for me to own an Xbox. They will get my money through Gamepass.

As for PS5, Sony's first party studios make a lot of my favorite games gen after gen so I will keep buying their consoles until that stops being the case.

Too early to say but assuming both have similar specs and price I see no reason to Switch over to Xbox, specially so if Ps5 will be backwards compatible with all my Ps4 (and hopefully PS3?) games.

I'm thinking about going PC though. Thanks to a lot of PC storefronts adopting regional pricing for my country in recent years games have become a LOT cheaper on PC.
Like Star Wars fallen order is $28 right now on the epic store and they have a $10 coupon so I can buy it for $18......... On Ps4 it's $65

At this point, which of these two next-gen consoles do you see yourself purchasing? I know it's early, and there are a lot of unknowns still, but what are you thinking at this point?

I'm specifically asking about PS5 / XSX. I know there are other platforms (e.g., PC and Switch), but I'm interested in how the PS5 vs. Xbox race shakes out. I expect PS5 will get the most support, but I know we have a lot of Xbox fans here as well. I'm also curious how many people plan on getting both.

Both, easily. The machines do 2 totally different things far as I'm concerned. I got PS4 for those big single player exclusives. I got Xbox for my competitive play and almost all multiplats. Off-topic, my pc is the frame rate beast.

Next gen will probably see both system a lot closer to one another in power, however Xbox and Gamepass is just too good to pass up. Sony still have those monstrous exclusives. I don't see how anyone couldn't at least want both. They both do great things individually and as a gamer I don't wanna miss out on either experience.

PS5. Day one if it has full backwards compatibility, once it gets a half dozen must haves if not.

Xbox just feels like a weird vestigial brand these days, with the all its games being available on PC too. It constantly throws shit at the wall to see if anything sticks, but it's just felt kind of weirdly dated and completely superfluous to requirements these passed few years. The XSX, with its silly name and zero effort, boring arse box design only reinforce that.

Only sex Sony ain't got no games .......that I care about unless they brought twisted metal back

At this point PS5 only.

Based on what was revealed the Xbox won't fit under any of my TVs - except in my office and I already have a decent PC there.

PS5 is easily day one. They've yet to let down. Xbox One was a purchase tha never justified itself, so MS needs to prove themselves first, then maybe I'll get both.

As opposed to that Gearbox game that has been announced?
Little premature to decide which console to back based on any games announced this early.
What does Gearbox have to do with it?

All I said is that I won't be buying the XSX and Hellblade 2 is something I'll have to miss out on.
Besides, an elaborate answer was a few posts down.

You joke, but they are going to put out ray-traced Minecraft and it's gonna look amazing. I wouldn't be shocked to see it PC/XSeX exslusive and it would be a major, major launch title.
Yeah sure, that's why people gonna migrate from PC to X. Ray Tracing is a gimmick to drive sales and to differentiate themselves in the artificially bloated "GPU specs wars".

I am a pretty Japanese centric gamer, always has been - so whichever has more support from Japanese developers would get my vote. And I don't see why Xbox would have more Japanese support than PS5... so at this point, same as now. PS5 for main console (unless they really really f it up), Switch for my nintendo fix, and Steam for western/pc fix.

I do want Xbox though.... but not enough to buy one just yet..... but If Jet Set Radio Future gets 4k 60fps treatment - I'm definitely buying one no matter what though, as I'm on the borderline for getting Xbox One X for Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2....

It really depends. I bought them all this generation. I can't see doing that again. Don't have the cash or time. I just have to pick one. Thanks to game pass being on pc I might just get a ps5. Unless the XSX blows my pc out of the water I think this is the path I'll take.

I often hear services will be the reason Xbox will pull ahead next generation but numbers never support that argument

I think PS5 will be the victor

PS5 for sure. I will always buy the Playstation consoles.

Xbox... well... maybe one day, if it could run PC games from Steam.... otherwise... I will just play the Xbox games on my PC.

Sony doesn't exactly make Japanese games anymore. Their focus for the future is western 3rd person games sadly. But Bloodborne 2 would be great yes.

No way are they going to give up on Bloodbourne 2.

If it's in development they know that game will be a huge system seller. They may not focus so much on Japanese games anymore, but at the same time they know how strong it would be for their system with an exclusive From game, especially the Bloodbourne IP.

If I'm buying a console next gen (and that's a huge if) it'll be a PS5. Microsoft has zero games I'm interested in, and if that ever changes I can just play them on PC.

Ps5.

As I've said before I won't buy another xbox again because I never use it. Microsoft only has a tiny handful of exclusive games on it I want and most of those come out on PC also. Playstation on the other hand has a ton of exclusive games I want and I can play all the cross platform games on it also. Plus I like the dual shock controller much better.

My playstation and PC give me more games than I can play as it is. And switch is there for a few occasional Nintendo first party games I want. An xbox is utterly useless to me. My xbox one s has been in the store room a year now.
