8GB of RAM? Is it enough?

Yes, fam. I am doing YET another laptop thread, so freaking sue me. Lol. But like the title asks, is 8GB of RAM enough? Or is that just too little now, especially when paired with an i5 processor?

For browsing, light weight editing, watching movies etc, sure it's enough.
For current gaming -- it's enough for now.
For next gen games -- not really enough, 16gb is destined to become the new minimum amount of ram needed.

For games 8gb is the bare minimum. U are playing it on the edge tho. Some games have performance issue's already on 8gb and 16gb is heavily advised as its most likely the new standard at the end of the year when next gen consoles come out. If you play anno 1800 however get ready for 32gb memory. Anything higher then 32gb isn't much useful at this point.

My i3 laptop has 4GB of Ram and it does everything I need it to do just fine (Browsing, art, video editing).

If you are talking about gaming, though. That's a different story. But you put this in off-topic, so I assume you aren't.

I have 32GB in my system and I'm still paranoid.

But I like to have 15 tabs open in chrome, on top of photoshop and 3DS Max.

i5 8GB is fine for shitposting at best (SSD mandatory) but beyond that you'll need more.

Windows caches more memory when available, my consumes 4GB right now (out of 16). 8GB is minimum these days, still should be fine for most current gen games, it won't for next gen ports.

8GB is good for a lightweight Linux Arch.

Windows 10 functions decently enough with 8GB.

Mac OS X >High Sierra, 16GB or go home.

Windows reserves more memory if you got it. when i had 8gb i barely had 3gb in use. with 16gb i had like 7gb or 8gb in use, with 32gb i have like 13.4gb in use with barely doing anything.

By the time you buy a laptop, you'll need 64Gb.

It's a laptop, not a life long commitment, just buy one.

You're right. I was going to save up until the end if the month and go for 16GB, but fudge it. 8GB is enough for me. I think my old laptop was shit because of the HDD and generally being cheaply made. The only things I plan on doing on this laptop is browsing, shitposting (lol), listening to music, streaming video, writing, and graphics. I should be good with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.

👍

So what laptop is it this time?
Personally I would go with 16GB if your going to do any gaming but if you do get a laptop with only 8GB make sure it's dual channel.

The Acer Swift 5. How do I tell if it's dual channel? I might just wait the 3 weeks and get the 16GB model, though. Although I doubt I'll be doing any gaming on it. But I've had my eye on this laptop for months now.

If you want to game on it and it has a decent GPU, you will regret not getting 16.

But, you can also make sure to get one that has upgradeable ram so you can change it to 16 later.

It says in the description that it's dual channel memory, so 2 modules of 4gb each. The laptop doesn't have any kind of graphics solution worth mentioning, so more ram doesn't seem necessary. As long as you don't run too many applications at once, 8gb should suffice.

8GB - Ok for most stuff, if you're a heavy user and opens lots of tabs on Chrome for example this might be low.
16GB - Perfect for all kinds of users, except professionals who use software that requires more than this.

Thank you! I'll go ahead and get the 8GB model then. I don't see why I should pay $300 more for the extra ram after what you just said.

According to Amazon the memory can be upgraded as well. Doing so should be easy and much more inexpensive. I think you made the right choice.

8gb is enough if you don't game. I had 8gb in my desktop with my i5 until I upgraded to a ryzen 5 3500 and 16gb for gaming and I never had problems running Plex, discord, twitch, browser etc.. all at the same time.

If I had to choose I would go with a AMD option at that price range, you get just about the same performance but with the added ability to to some gaming . Bigger bonus is the are generally more affordable.

I like this one. I had looked at a different model of the Acer Aspire 5 before. It looks just as good as the Swift 5 IMO. Cheaper too. I mean, the Swift 5 has thinner bezels, but this one is really nice in its own right. I'm just a big fan of Acer in general. Good pick?

Looks good but I'm personally not a fan of ACER laptops , last one I had was a lemon , when gaming it would randomly just shut down.

From that list I linked I would look into getting the Lenovo Flex 14 it has 12GB RAM and build quality in Lenovo's are generally better.

I do like Acer, but I've never personally owned one. That particular model is really highly rated. Sucks that you got a lemon. I like the Lenovo, though. Having the 12GB RAM would be nice and it comes with a pen. It looks like a good choice too being the #1 seller in 2-in-1 laptops on Amazon. This is going to be tough. :pie_thinking:

If you aren't editing large video file, 8GB si fine for everything. Also Gaming. Every game runs at maxed setting without problem, and i never reached a point where i needed more ram. Gaming in 1080@144 or 4k maxed out, never a problem. I don't know how people use their computer, or what is running under the hood, but 8gb is fine for now. Of course, you need also the vram if you want to play at 4k. 8 + 8vram the end. Maybe the trend will change with the newer console, but what you need to do is to upgrade at 16gb, for now, no.

If you plan on upgrading your laptop this year then dont worry about it.

If you're planning keeping it into 2021 then double your ram.

Yup, with 8gb there is no running discord, twitch or youtube while having a couple of tabs open. Unless you're into inflicting pain onto yourself.
I do this all the time while playing rocket league at 121fps and it doesnt max out my 8GB of ram.

I wouldn't mind having more but I've never felt a huge need. I'll build a new PC in a couple years anyway.
