RTTP: Starship Troopers

Watching Starship Troopers on Amazon Prime right now, and even though I've seen it at least a dozen times before, it's still such an enjoyable movie.

Love the soap opera cast, the satire, and it still looks fucking amazing visually. It's funny, has great action, and all the main characters have great chemistry.

10/10, would like to know more.

Great movie. I re-watch it regularly.

Pro-tip: Don't watch any of the sequels. Especially the first sequel.

C'mon OP we all know you're just watching it for the shower scene...

My God.. Hero of the Federation or whatever the 2nd one was.. It was SO bad. But not even so bad it was ironically good.. It was straight trash fire.

I loved the original though, saw it in theaters. Still watch it now and then. Got the 4K steel book. I can enjoy it as a straight action movie and as satire. I like it both ways 😂

Yo, I'm a huge Starship Troopers fan. Make sure you watch the other movies too. Except for the second one they are all fun in their own way especially the 3rd has one of the most out-of-nowhere amazing ending that you will never forget. The animated movies (Invasion and Traitor of Mars) are both excellent and some of the best animated action movies out there. Apart from that the original book is truly spectacular (and has almost nothing to do with the movies) and if you can get your hands on the video games then they are great too (both the FPS and the RTS). Last but not least the table top RPG has a ton of interesting lore.

Only the first has Dina Meyer :messenger_heart::messenger_heart:

The fifth one has her too.

Great movie. It's fun on a dumb action movie level, but with Paul verhoeven directing, you also get some great satire. The cg is a little dated but the miniature and practical effects still look great. Also...

You should read the novel. It's infinitely better. Though the movie was awesome and I've seen it many times. The novel is just so much better.

So did the bugs send the meteor at the beginning or was propaganda to start a war with them? >.>

I loved this movie growing up, I didn't care much for the sequels, but I enjoyed Invasion, Traitor of Mars, and the Roughnecks series. I actually idolized Carmen and Dizzy as a young girl (them and Leeloo from Fifth Element) and thought if I went into the marines that I'd be fighting space spiderbugs

We're not fighting them, yet, too busy fighting each other. But when we do fight extraterrestrial arachnids, I'll enlist

Timeless movie. Holds up so, so well. Not to mention:

I've been trying to find it on 4K! It's my most wanted UHD.

Assuming you're not from the US, it's pretty difficult to find, I had to import it, but it's so worth it.

Classic movie, but wasn't it trashed when it came out? I also don't remember if it was a box office hit or bomb.

And I would also like to know if this was all propaganda or were the bugs really the bad guys. The movie for sure hints that the humans were the ones who started it all.

But I guess that kinda goes to the message that it doesn't really matter who starts it or who is the bad guy, all you need is war and an enemy, even if in the end that enemy is just defending themselves.

Da bugs did it. That's how they spread; load up an asteroid full of bug DNA/small creatures, launch. Does a shit load of damage and disgorges a new colony.

You see on the map that the bugs' homeworld is the other side of the galaxy so those meteors must come with a warp engine...

Or they foresaw humans becoming a threat millions of years ago and were able to calculate the trajectory all the way to earth before humans even existed. :lollipop_thescream: :lollipop_thescream::lollipop_thescream:

The Bugs have more advanced tech/evolution than the humans. They use some sort of launcher/FTL delivery. The ship that scrapes the rock is in FTL at the time, too.

I remember seeing this in Theaters in middle school with my friends and an adult chaperone and after we talked about it and I was like "wasn't that funny?"

And they were like "funny?" And they all thought it was a bad acting action movie.

And I was like "it's a comedy, they mixed 90210 with monsters and fascism" and they were like, no, it's just a bad movie with cool bugs.

And I tried to explain it to my parents and they didn't believe me and refused to see it "because the reviews are terrible"

I'm still fucking salty and self righteous about it.

I love this movie so much, it's Verhoeven's best. The way they deliberately cast soap opera stars who probably weren't even in on the joke. How they fooled people into thinking it was fascist propaganda when it's more like the opposite. It's quite the accomplishment, to intentionally make something this overt and still have the meaning slip by people. It's a fine line to walk, because it's clearly an absurdist movie, but still one that people take at face value. I can't think of any other movie that is this explicit while still managing to be subtle.

Those miniature effects also hold up pretty well I have to say.

And Flores <3

The novel is completely different thematically though.

You don't say

Ps - read the book too

The book is not very good. Though it is a hell of a smack down on liberalism as a whole. I shouldn't say the book isn't good but that the book and the movie are completely different entities basically. Very little in common in them..

The cartoon movies were okay. Starship Troopers itself is amazing and a must watch for anyone who likes movies. One of the most underrated movies of all time.

On the 4K disc, when you see the ships breaking up in space, there is SO MUCH DETAIL. I paused it and was astounded. I remember taking a picture of my TV but can't find it now. It looks really good even today.

Also, Basil Poledouris knocked the soundtrack out of the system. So good.
