Anyone else not fetishize Dogs & Cats?

Alright, maybe "fetish" is too strong a word, but really, the concept of allowing faith into your home, letting it dictate a significant portion of your life, from cleaning up to feeding to medical care to it destroying your property. I've had a variety of religions over my life of course like anyone, but at my ripe age I've come to a conclusion that it's something of a collective delusion, that we let these gods into our homes, cater to their every fucking need, and worst of all, anthropomorphize them into some avatar of "this etheral being loves me no matter what" - not *cough* judging anyone who needs a being who will 'love' them no matter what they do, because that's not at all creepy.

Bitter asshole finds letting an animal into your home and devoting a portion of your life to it creepy. Considers pet owners suckers.

Has kids instead.

What an idiot.

Having kids was by far the best thing I've ever done in my life.

Anyway, seriously guys of course I exaggerated my take a bit. I was fairly drunk last night and just looking to provoke some conversation. I wouldn't say I really consider pet owners "creepy suckers" but I do find it all a bit strange, just not for me. I'm happy to have friends & family own cats and dogs so I can visit and not have to take them home. Or buy their food. Or clean up their shit. Or pay their medical bills etc.

Out of all the dumb ass, trolling shit posts on GAF... the OP tops the pile.
Kudos.
I tip my fedora to you.

I read the title and literally expected this to be a thread by that creep who made the "do you ever wonder what it feels like it for your pets to give birth?" thread from my lurker days.

I kinda look at kid owners the same way you look at pet owners.

Having a cat seems like the better option honestly. They're way cuter. They're way cheaper. You still can enjoy most of the same benefits of caring for something. And cats wont hate you when they turn into teenagers, and then ship you off to a nursing home because you're too much trouble.

Um, I think this is probably why you shouldn't have kids. If you're just in the market for "getting the benefits of caring for something" yeah, some random animal will probably fill that hole for you. Children are a whole other level, which seems obvious but then your "caring for kids and animals is pretty much the same" group does have a lot of members.

And for the record my kids never hated me during their teen years, that's a tired cliche.

I don't want to have kids. Maybe that'll change someday, but tons of parents literally tell me at work that I'm "doing it right" and that they basically hate it but can't tell anyone. I never even bring it up, and they vent about it to me.

I'm sure it's got some good things about it. But it sounds like a ton of sacrifices to me, and everyone acts like it's automatically the only sensible choice.

I've never known a parent that hated it, I mean I'm sure they are out there, but almost everyone I grew up with ended up having kids and it has brought nothing but joy into their lives. Sure there are challenges but there's challenges in everything in life worth doing.

That being said there's no one right way to live. It should definitely not be an "automatic choice" and people need to do what's right for their life. The world has enough people, the last thing we need is folks who would rather not have children being guilted into it.

I work with a group of people who are obsessed with their dogs. It's all they talk about. Their dog did this funny thing, what foods do they give their dog etc etc. They talk about their dogs like they are their children and the conversations go on for hours while I just sit there trying to do my job and ignore their shit about dogs. Their whole personality is that they own dogs and like dogs and talk about dogs and have to leave early or come in late...because dogs. It's mind boggling.

That would definitely be annoying. I don't bring my dogs up at work unless I'm asked about them or the conversation is already about pets. People at work are probably far more tired of hearing me talking about sports lol.

I agree, mostly. My family treat my dog like a baby, and I regret allowing it to happen. He's a great dog, but he has become a human being in his own right and he should really be a dog. ( I.E Not on human beds or seats).

I also feel sorry for him now and again. He's been walked every day of his life but he's from a line of working terriers and should be on a farm chasing rabbits and crows and having puppies with lady dogs. I sometimes wonder if the life he has with us in the town is somehow worse off for him, even though he's very well looked after. Do dogs need to stimulate their natural instinct? I play chase with him but I don't know if that's enough?

One thing I absolutely think should happen are dog licences. The amount of poor creatures I come across that are locked up in a back garden and haven't been walked since they were puppies really pisses me off. You have to be a responsible person to own a dog. Of course the type of dog might determine how much of a responsibility it is.

Anyway I've decided I won't have another dog. Certainly not before I retire. Great animals, but they require a substantial amount of time to bring up properly.

I totally get the appeal of having a pet, though I've never really had one except for a couple of hamsters back when I was a kid.

But "cat people" and "dog people" do occasionally annoy the fuck out of me.

While I understand your reasoning and I do think a lot of people worship animals too much I think that my dog has done a wonderful job for my daughter. The dog is 7, my daughter is 5, she had several developmental problems and it's still unclear where she sits on the spectrum (she is not a typical child) but she is totally functional and my dog helped her be social and care for animals and people alike. She helps with the development of my daughter and I know my daughter is open to talk to people and to be caring for other human beings all because of this animal. So, fuck it, I love my dog. I don't treat her like a human being but she is important to me and to my family.

Also, she doesn't destroy anything in my house. She is like a little Buddha. She is low maintenance and all she does is play a little and then sit or lay down all day and she is quiet as fuck. Japanese Chins are a great breed.

Kid owners? They're called parents.

I'm a parent and I'm a proud one. My daughter is the most important thing in the world and no pet in the universe can compare to a toe of her (even though I love my dog). I would give my life to my daughter if possible. People who aren't parents can't possibly understand the love a parent has for a child. No, it's not comparable to loving a pet, not at all. I would fucking cut the world in half for my daughter. I lost my second baby before he/she was born and it hurt like hell - worst pain ever. It was worse than losing my mom even though I never met my second child.

People who hate animals that I've ever known are 9 times out of 10 shitty people.

Conversely, some dogs seem to have the superpower to tell if someone is an asshole after only just meeting them. If our dog doesn't like you right off the bat, I got some reservations about you already.

I live on a farm without livestock, so idk if this applies. I have two cats and a dog, but they serve a purpose beyond companionship. The cats are for mousing (because those bastards get in no matter what we do), and the dog is there to keep away potentially troublesome animals, especially garden annihilating rabbits (and to be the doorbell)

oh yeah if i have a kid def gunna hook em up with a dog or cat (hopefully they want a dog ;) ) its easy to see how pets can brighten a person's day

I've seen dogs and cats treat their humans like family. Animals have the same capacity for emotion as we do. And as such, I have seen them exhibit more compassion for their human (I hate that "master" crap because they don't see a slave/master relationship... They see us as family) than other humans have for humans.

I reject this because that feeling of love is so imagined and subjective. Is subservience and an eagerness to please "love" now? Maybe your definition of Love reflects badly on you.
Don't you have children? It's basically the same thing minus the genetic legacy.

I have dogs at home, and would get another for my apartment if they didn't charge an arm and a leg for non-refundable pet 'deposits' (aka a charge) plus fucking pet 'rent' on top of that.

I've never had pets before now I got an older dog that is a family dog and young puppy. The little puppy loves being held by me and falling asleep in my arms. The older one gets upset she isn't being held so I hold her also and she makes a noise like what are you doing ? Actually I like this. But I'm gonna pretend to complain.
No matter how many times they see me they are always happy to see me. No matter what.
my kids love them.

Maybe it is evolutionary, but I rather watch my dog crap in the front yard than debate the merits of the OP's opinion on 'what love is'
