Interesting that this Direct drought lines up with a year that will refresh Nintendo's two competitors with brand-new hardware.
I'm starting to wonder if the regular schedule is out the window so Nintendo can make an extra-large splash at E3. Perception is a big deal, and the first clash between all three consoles can and will stay in public memory for a long time (see the Xbox One) — you want to make that a positive impression for your system.
Of course, Sony is skipping, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them unveil at about the same time, at their own venue, and on their own terms.
Altogether, it may not make sense, this time, for Nintendo to spend ammunition wowing customers in the early year, when the real battle lies ahead.
