Hey friends, I just wanna apologize for going full retard (like my son) yesterday. A lot has been going on in my life, and brap is one of my good friends, and idk it set me off. It doesn't excuse my behavior, I know. Anyway, I'm still taking a step back from GAF, but I figured I'd at least hop on to apologize.

That's a naive pipe dream. Long term members who are part of the community get more slack than newcomers who nobody knows yet. That's how current GAF moderation generally appears to work. That's how every (functional) community on the planet works. Families are the ultimate example of this. The black-and-white by-the-book rule-driven alternative where the rules are set in stone and context doesn't matter is a dystopian nightmare where people are just disposable units who can be replaced at any time.

In exchange for the greater slack, long term members have a responsibility to set an example for the new members. Brap didn't do that in terms of tone, but as someone else mentioned, he also tended to attack ideas and not the person (at least in my observation). His console warring shitposting generally had an underlying ironic self-awareness. He knew he was being a clown, but he was dragging himself down to the level of the idiots and beating them with experience. You don't think that mockery had a discouraging effect on the idpol-inclined types he was mocking? EviLore EviLore has essentially just beheaded the court jester.

Your Ree/old-GAF comparison is completely backwards btw. The villagers there are competing to get each other banned, not to keep them around. It's exclusion vs inclusion.
 
I know he was your friend, matt, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to paint brap as some savant playing 4D console warring chess.

He was young and a little too brash at times. Age and wisdom would sort him out, I am sure.

Had a shower thought. Brap was the message board equivalent of punk rock. Loud and messy in an enjoyable sort of way. Screaming into the void about injustices perceived or real, always with a wink to those in the know. Not for every taste, but those who enjoy it, really get into it!

EDIT: To those who are upset about the "whining". Think of this as if it were a death. Some of us only interacted with him on NeoGAF, and now he's well and truly gone. It is a real loss and the grieving process will be similar.

I dunno, for a thread where people talk shit about other users who could no longer defend themselves because they were banned, why wait until brap was banned to criticize others for talking shit? I think half the posts in the ban thread are "Good riddance" type posts.

I mean, if we consider like four of Gaf's universally worst posters to be both a majority, and authority on the matter.

More than likely, most are just happy there's one less obstacle to them shitting their politics, hot takes, and disingenuous arguing everywhere.
