Factors always differ. The common denominator is that countries that listened to leading scientists early and exclusively made the best out of whatever particular crisis situation they have been in.
While the ones that didn't ended up with way more deaths than necessary.
I think it's interesting that this seems to at least somewhat correlated with having a female leader.

Pandemics don't just disappear. If we let them, novel viruses will spread until we have a vaccine.
Different viruses have different R0 values, the R0 values measures how many other people have to be infected by one infected person for the virus to continue spreading.
Unfortunately Corona has a very low R0 value.
German virologist expect that the R0 value needs to be pushed below 1 for the virus to stop spreading.
Meaning that each positive person must on average infect less than 1 other person. Think about what that means: Up to 2 weeks of incubation, 40-50% asymptomatic course and many weeks of total course of illness. During all that time people are infectious and must infect less than 1 other person on average.
The virus spreads exponentially unless we take measures against the exponential spread. (Social distancing, staying at home)
That statement will be true until there is a vaccine and 70% of the population are vaccinated.
So the task now is to find a level of shutdown measures that's effective enough so that the healthcare infrastructure isn't overwhelmed, but at the same time allows as many freedoms as possible and allows the economy to run as normal as possible.
Finding this sweet spot requires a lot of coordination and information, though. Currently, most countries aren't in a position to find this sweet spot, because they don't test enough and don't know enough about the state of the spread.
But one thing is clear: Larger gatherings of people will not be possible for the next 1-2 years.
Edit: For reference: Ebolas R0 value was something between 8-9 iirc. So when one infected person infected less than 8 other people, the spread would die out. Add to that that Ebola patients were only infectious when they already showed massive symptoms and had high fevers, not a state where you'd go to work or a concert.
Which is the reason why Ebola didn't become a pandemic.

There are many remedies with some promise to them. But early studies show that effects are very small if measurable at all.
It's irresponsible to propagate miracle ailments during a pandemic.
So-called "cures" in the best case, will be able to reduce ICU admissions by a few percents or reduce time in ICU by some degree on average.
But there won't be anything like antibiotics you can give to just kill coronaviruses.
The only real solution will be the vaccine in 1-2 years.
Keeping people locked up without a way to pay for rent or food for 1-2 years is not possible. Do you not realize that? There will be more deaths if they try that.

If it can work and improve chances slightly which studies and ancedotal work show it can save lives until or if ever a vaccine comes out.
I hope we can have a vaccine but thats no gurantee and then you have the monumental task or producing and vaccinating billions of people across the globe.
I have to wonder why so much faith in this 1 to 2 year timeline when we dont have a SARS or AIDS vaccine yet. But way more doubt in dozens if not more stories about HQ having positive effects ?
I am not advocating that HQ works and corona is done. But whats the evidence that leads you to believe we will have a vaccine within 2 years outside of the media and Fauci that keep repeating 1 to 2 years?

Belgium is hit hard. Germany is nothing to boast about, unless you compare to the likes of Italy, even Iran is doing better.
Scandinavia in general is sparsely populated and not that often visited by tourists.
A ton of countries is doing better than most of in this list., including Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

I don't think the Abe government is capable of pulling off a conspiracy like that without it leaking immediately. More like was that folks started getting sick of the voluntary event cancellations and such around March when the weather got nice and the cherry blossoms started blooming and went outside without masks, letting their guards down, thinking that Japan was special in some way and had somehow avoided the virus.

This seems really important. I feel like we've mostly been talking about the disease in binary terms--you either got it or don't, but it seems that the severity may be determined by the viral load. Intuitively that makes sense, I suppose, considering how vaccines work.

I don't see how it is a conspiracy theory at thus point. This thing spreads easily, like the flu, it was in our borders probably a week after it appeared in China. And in NYC in particular, a place with hundreds of flights a day from China and Europe, and massive reliance on PT where people are crammed in tight areas, it spread like wildfire after that. I just don't see how one can be so foolish as to think the government found the original cases the first time they appeared here. If someone from the future came here and told me NYC has 2-3 million cases in reality I would believe it.

I believe the issue had more to do with senators dumping stocks, one would assume because they had knowledge of what was about to happen with the virus in America. When you couple that with Trump downplaying the threat of the virus things start to look a little shady. People dump stocks then *surprise* health officials drop the news that yeah we are in for some serious shit.

There was no "conspiracy", they just had (and still have to some degree) very strict requirements in order to get tested, and limited numbers of tests.
They weren't hiding numbers, just producing low numbers to begin with, by the nature of the way the testing works.
People are still out and about quite a bit today. Still lots of people without masks. People with symptoms not being tested unless they meet the requirements. These are the problems.
