The PS5 Reveal Has Put All the Pressure Back on Microsoft - Ryan McCaffrey

No they're not competing against Sony and selling consoles is irrelevant to them.

In what world are they not competing against PlayStation and Nintendo? Because Phil Spencer said so? Of course they are competing against PlayStation. It is about a direct offense competition as you can have.

That's like Wendy's saying they don't consider McDonald's their competition.

Sony had the chance to put the nail in the coffin with the show last night and they didn't.

It's the most incremental looking console upgrade so far and the strange design doesn't help either.

I feel like Microsoft have something to prove this gen and I really hope they go for it. Competition is only a good thing, especially after xbox one was DOA.

I don't think anyone should underestimate the impact of a fully next gen looking Halo. I just hope that's what we actually get.

I think everyone expected too much of Sony's show, and I personally thought it might force Microsoft's hand to show something in June if it blew us out of the water.

It ended up being good, but definitely not great imo.

Sony did not announce the price, so it's not that much pressure. I found the presentation itself underwhelming as I think we're running up to diminishing returns in a lot of these games.

I'm not beholden to Sony anymore as MLB The Show is going multi-platform, and that's practically the only game I play anymore.
Out of curiosity, since it is going multiplatform... where are you planning on playing it?

I have no idea about baseball but the game releases in europe every year for about 40 euro...which must be due to lower popularity here.

It blew me out of the water, especially knowing The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima are coming out before then (and playable on PS5).

Then again, Demon's Souls is one of my favorite games ever. So, that alone, was enough to get me super excited.

Pressure after yesterday's show? Lol

Microsoft has pressure from all the hyping up they been doing and from the disappointing 3rd party showing.

Sony just had one of its most disappointing presentations ever. We had like 80% indies and AA "gamepass tier" game like we'd be hearing if these were on the xsx show. Then we had 3 or 4 first party games. Only interesting one was Horizon and R & C.

Even Microsoft with their track record with 1st party games this gen, can actually deliver a good show compared to the joke we got yesterday. "Guys we get a million dollars free every month on a 7 year old game that's getting released AGAIN" lol "pressure".

I honestly thought it was a terrible showing

I kept waiting for the bomb to drop and it never came. Halfway through I actually said to a friend of mine, "If I see one more damn cartoony game I am going to cut this shit off." Then Deathloop came on, I was like son of a...

I loved it, I am a huge Insomniac fan...R&C and Spider-man will be incredible for me. I have been waiting for GT7 for a long time and I never played the OG Demons Souls....

Horizon looked mindblowing to me, especially the beach and the turtle and mammoth robots.

Most of the net is super positive...

They are a company it's disgenous and no disrespect to you ignorant to say thy don't care about the world. No matter how small a dent you make, companies are always trying to expand, without expansion your profit margins don't grow hence Sony not only beating them in revenue this gen but also profit. Don't let tht Microsoft bs pr fool you.
I don't think they expect to sell well in Asia or Europe. I'm sure they spend a lot of money on projections and I bet most of their numbers show they are not winning those regions. Even last gen they had priority regions and certain countries didn't even have xboxes during launch.

Will you just go for what is cheaper or do you consider value? Is a bluray of any consequence to you?
My impression is that console exclusivity will not be a huge factor next generation and that the Xbox Series X will be the more powerful console. So if the price premium on the Series X looks fair, then I will go ahead and get that one.

But if we are going to talk exclusives, the exclusive I am most excited about is Microsoft Flight Simulator. I used to love Sony's big single-player story games but they seem to be going in a different direction than I would like.

MS has a lot to prove next month. Spencer has gotten like 50 chances and is still getting in his stride (kek) after working there for 30 years. If the first party showing isn't impressive this time, it never will be.

Counting on Halo is misguided I feel, Destiny is everything Halo was and more to people now.... people don't really need Halo.
I would agree, IF Destiny was not such an empty shell. I just play it for like 10 hours with friends and then "meh". But gameplay is fucking sublime, best in the market. They should sell their technology.

Are diehard Xbox guys losing patience with Xbox? Is McCaffrey a traitor? Will Xbox's event in July change everything and make articles like this age poorly? Let's see.

Xbox has been poking a very quiet bear for a while now. Yesterday, that bear woke up and struck back HARD and with a vengeance. How will Xbox respond? Do they have the ammo to make a counterattack? It should be interesting.

Your last paragraph makes this sound like a report from war torn Somalia or something.
These are bloody video game.consoles, fancy electronic toys for playing shooty space men games or watching films on.
Sheesh, chap.

Thank you. That conference wasn't all that great ..it was mediocre. We know Sony is coming with more. MS has had pressure on them way before yesterday. MS had better bring some heat.

I say it took pressure off all the cry babies exclusives wah well the big PS5 first party game is glorified dlc from a ps4 game lol. They call it stand slone if it is reusing maps and things like that it be cross generation baby. The rest could be years out no dates or game play demos given. Microsoft just got a year stay of excution for obsidian. Inexile. Ninja theory and play ground rpg studios to get moving to first batches of what is to come. Sony showed nice stuff but hardly incredible like year pre 9-9-99.

No, it's not.

Yes it is coming to Xbox - look at the fine print at bottom center it says "Console Exclusive for a Limited Time. Also available on PC" so at launch its PS5/PC and then Xbox Series X - in the trailer on YouTube that was uploaded at 4K afterwards. Here you go I'll show you myself oh and also yes it is not photoshop you can watch it yourself as well.

I think Microsoft only has two cards to show: 1st party games and price.

Sony has more cards to show: price, BC details (like if and how can be enhaced the PS4 games), crossbuy details, next gen PS Now changes and improvements, OS UI & features (patents hint to very cooll things but they still didn't announced it), PSVR2 plans or PSVR support, secondary HW specs (wifi, bluetooth, etc)...

Showing the PS5 and specially its main games for the first couple of years put MS in a difficult position, and Sony still has more cards than MS to show.

All i can say that i noticed more and more xbox youtubers small ones giving up on xbox and stream ps4 games old and new .
Juat wait for the uptick in tlou2 and ghost streams from these guys.
They all say they understand now the hype and that its really all about the games.

I would say yes they are done waiting but i am sure they will get back to xbox day one.
But they know if the games continue to be mediocre they will drop xbox way faster and migrate to ps5 for good.

People say why not both well cuz of subscription service for both will be expensive vs just for one.

So i think the pressure is on for xbox to deliver the games as they have to sell software and service. They dont care for hardware sales.

haha that's a good point on the GamePass filler. Games like Little Devil Inside, Deathloop, Destruction AllStars, whatever the Sackboy thing is called, whatever the Astro Bot demo is called, Returnal, Jett, that Kameo/Zelda looking game, etc.... these would be brushed off as cross gen GamePass filler if MS showed them even though some of them looked great.

Lol the Xbox is the more powerful console. Microsoft has no pressure, Which is why they revealed the console so early. Just price it competitively and they can win back North America.
27 year old virgin.
I feel bad for you but maybe you need ps5 to pop your cherry.
Stop holding out for xbox. She just wants you to be in the friend zone.

😎

Lol, whatever. There was a TON there. Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet and Demon's Souls are also huge. Not to mention SquareEnix's Project Athia.

  • Spider-man is not a full fledged title - it is confirmed to be similar to the size of Uncharted: Lost Legacy

  • Ratchet and Clank - Looks amazing yes, but its not coming at launch as far we are concerned If it was coming at launch I am sure they would say so. - big missed opportunity here, but I guess Spider-man will make up for it?.

  • Demon's Souls - Looks amazing yes, but it's not coming at launch as far we are concerned. If it was coming at launch I am sure they would say so - another missed opportunity, hopefully this rolls in 2021.

  • Sackboy: Little Big Planet looks like a ps4 title and a rip off Super Mario 3D World. Also, let's be real most people forgot LBP even existed after the failure of LBP3 which was forever ago.

  • Project Athia: Extremely far away, super early, also a timed exclusive as confirmed in the trailer of the game at the end in a fine print.

  • Godfall - Sadly, looks abysmal and feels last-gen. Nothing exciting here and I wanted it to be good, but it doesn't look like it will be so.

  • Gran Turismo 7 - Meh, very niche game/genre - has it's audience and popularity and it's not even coming at launch so go figure?
So far the PS5 launch line up is looking super stale. Godfall and Spider-man Miles Morales won't cut it for me personallly. Thankfully there is 3rd party like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla but that's on both platforms. Very lackluster launch from 1st party so far. Disappointed.

Typical fanboy talk. About 2TF is no difference.
Xbox One X has 6TF, PS4 1,84TF, now look at Gears 5 and Uncharted Lost Legacy, God of War or The Last of Us 2.

I LOVE Ryan Mcaffery but he's just wrong here.

If MS shows just three of these games... (Halo Infinite, Fable, Perfect Dark, Hellblade II, or Obsidians next AAA project) XBox fanboys will be posting that funeral coffin gif/meme for the next three months gloating over Sony.

Sony left the door wide open for MS and it would be shocking to me if they weren't able to capitalize on it.

Never underestimate these companies. They can fuck up pleasing their crowd very well.

I've been married for 5 years. Lol

But I did lose my virginity late in life. You got me there. Lol I wish I was still 27 years old.

I wasn't totally impressed by the showing. Ratchet and Clank looked amazing, but mostly everything else looked like a PS4 game with upgraded textures. Some reveals didn't look next gen at all.

Xbox still has in it them to pull it off. Show some truly next gen exclusives that can't be done on PS5, double down on Game Pass, remind people that backwards compatibility is across all generations and gives automatic 4K upgrades and near non existent load speeds, then give it a really competitive price and I think it'll be Sony who'll start feeling the pressure.

I don't think Halo cuts it in this day and age, compared to games like Horizon 2 and Spiderman.

What else is rumoured? I know of Fable rumour and you'd expect Forza again.

What pressure really? To win next-gen? That's just nuts and ain't gonna happen. As long as the gaming division keeps generating billions for Microsoft (and they don't crater the brand like Don Mattrick tried to do), they will be fine.
Last Gen MS won North America. They can do the same this Gen. Sony will have Europe and no one will care about Japan. PS5 is the size of a Japanese apartment, so it will flop over there.

As if Hellblade is some excellent goty contender type game lol its decent to good (part 1 is at around an 80 meta) Halo hasnt even been tht for years. None of those can compare this gen to Horizon or Spidey in sales or metas. Then again we heard these same hyperbolic comments with Crackdown and we saw how tht ended.

Alot of hyperbolic shit going around. We fully expect Halo and Hellblade to be shown and? I'll take Horizon over either or any day and other games as well. This isn't early xbox360 when Halo was tht thing those days of glory been passed.

As a longtime fan of PlayStation, it just overall wasn't for me. I loved the Ratchet and Clank series in the past though.

really wish they could give us PS1 and PS2 emulation, allowing me to get rid of my PS3. That would at least make up for some other ways I've felt let down.

Are people actually impressed with yesterdays showing?

I have a hard time imaging Microsoft being particularily scared after that show.

Nothing I saw yesterday made me think "now this is pod-racing! next-gen!" though I also don't expect Microsoft to somehow be able to surpass what Sony showed.

The thing that Microsoft is going to have a problem competing with is third party exclusives. Sony seems to have them, MS never does.

It's fascinating how many folks seem to so much of the PS5 event lineup is actually PS5 exclusive. Generally if Sony ain't publishing it, it won't be exclusive. Games are too expensive these days for publishers to limit their reach.

It's even crazier that people think this way after we just went through this generation. You gotta pay for publishing rights or co-development deals if you want a 3rd party exclusive these days.

Halo is still "king", you just don't realize it. Microsoft gave 343i 5 years to get this one right. It's releasing on a ton of platforms. It will outsell every game Sony showed at their PS5 conference...by a considerable margin.

I haven't "defended" Microsoft in almost 10 years but this hyperbole is getting insane.

I get fanboying for a brand, but Sony didn't wow very many people yesterday. They just didn't.

This is exactly what I am
Talking about in the GQ thread.

The exposure Sony generated has wiped out any momentum MS had until now. Of course MS their first showing was during early days of lockdown so I forgive them for the quality of the show. But also it was as Inside Xbox episode and Xbox Fans know are familiar with the format.

However, now there are more established best practices around Covid. I expect ALOT from their next showing.

If any of MS is still on this forum, PLEASE do not rely on third party execs coming on and chat shit about your little fucking promo deal. XBOX GAMES STUDIOS better fucking carry your console on its shoulders.
No it didn't.

Ryan is a "gaming journalist" so he obviously has to have a take on yesterdays event, but I highly doubt he truly believes MS is in any danger due to that presentation.

This was the event PS and their fans have anticipated and hyped for months and it completely fell flat on its face compared to the hype generated. Not saying it was bad, but it was average at best. Simply breaking down the games shown makes it evidently clear.

Their launch title seems to be a spin-off expansions of Spiderman, while the rest of their 1st party titles didn't have a date and those were the game they were confident of showing.

MS is still to have their show of 1st party titles and 2nd/3rd party exclusives. Plus there are marketing deals that will push the Series X, just imagine they launch with a Cyberpunk edition, which they already did on Xbox One, a AC: Valhalla edition, and a Halo Infinite edition.

Up on release you will have a choice of Series X and Halo vs. PS5 and a Spiderman spin-off expansion. The only unknown is the price and if MS beats Sony on that Sony will have a lot of catching up to do.

But right now Xbox is cruising and they are feeling confident, absolutely nothing to worry about.

Halo Infinite will sell well over 20 million copies on all platforms when all is said and done. Halo is a much bigger franchise than you realize.
No it won't. It'll be on game pass day one so where's the incentive for paying $60 for it?

Did the last Halo game sell more than Horizon Zero Dawn?

I'm curious as to why you are so confident in Halo when Horizon sold 10 million +
