PS VR spotlight kicks off today

This week sees new reveals and updates on upcoming games, as well as a VR-focused PS Store promotion .

Hey all. Over the next few days, we're going to spotlight some upcoming games coming to PlayStation VR, including some announcements and updates for previously revealed PS VR titles.

It kicks off today at 3pm BST / 4pm CEST / 7am PST, and we'll have further updates to share each day at the same time through to Friday.

And as mentioned, this is all about the games. So to manage expectations, there'll be no PS5-related news.

That's weird to skip such a convenient day to make an announcement.

Let me guess Dealer, Colt and Timdog talk for the first 20 minutes about how they told you that the S was coming (something everyone knew) and that all the doubters now "have to take a big L", they ignore their TFs are king narrative in favour of price is king

To be fair Dealer and Colt do call MS out on their lack of games, and have (quite rightly) recently talked quite a bit about how graphics should scale and give other platforms their due. However, I bet Greenberg and 'Major Nelson' are just glad that these things are done over a stream, because being in the same room as Timdog would be messy with him trying to jerk off all over them.

I've no problem with that. The problem I have is thinking that no other platform will get movie-level assets and textures simply because none of the alternate hardware platforms have EXACTLY the same I/O speed as the PS5. This isn't a do or die situation here. All these things will be brought to the other platforms as well. The overall I/O speed up is definitely a good thing. It just gets annoying when certain fans of a particular platform think theirs will be the only platform to partake of the goodness simply because other numbers don't match up. It's basically a transparent agenda behind it.

one example how PS5 SSD could do things other platforms can not and it was talked in road to PS5 by Mark Cerny with Jak & Daxter example.
if PS5 SSD could stream data behind player when turns in 0.5 second that means there's more spce available in RAM and more bandwidth to render what it's in current view of player meaning higher quality assets, more polys to render for GPU.
But it's not just about sustained SSD speeds that allows that its also about latency, priority levels because data must be requested and transferred from SSD to RAM immediately with minimum latency to work that way and what if there's more data at that given moment requested? that's why PS5 SSD have 6 priority levels.
you could not do that even on Nvidia's 3070 and 3080(with 10gb , 8gb of RAM) without having SSD with low latency and above 2 priority levels.
Streaming is necessary for assets which exceeds 10GB for my given example, there's no way PC I/O could achieve such latency because data goes through cpu, kernel, drivers back and forth into GPU memory.
Now if you can give me example how that could be achieved on others platforms i'm all ears.

So you are saying that it's good for VR based on something that we haven't even seen? We don't even know how that reprojection would work. And even if it goes to 60fps, that's still low for an optimal VR experience.

The whole REYES approach is enabled by fast I/O

It's not. REYES is a set of algorithms and structures that were devised a long time ago. Having fast I/O is not a requirement of it.

specially in VR where geometry LOD is much more apparent than in a regular 3rd or 1st person camera.

Do you have some data to validate that claim? None of the papers I've read regarding presence and perception in VR claim that.

1 I am saying it'll probably be good for vr based on current known performance targets. We've also seen how reprojection works, on PSVR.
2 I guess I must be clearer. Reyes was limited to offline renderers only until modern fast IO systems enabled real time engines to make use of native quality assets without being bottlenecked by ram. Fast I/O is a requirement, unless video ram isn't an issue. Ram is an issue in next gen consoles.
3 you don't need a paper to tell you you are much more free to examine your surroundings in vr, compared to looking through a screen

This is my prediction as well, unless they get ballsy and take a bigger loss than we expected them to be willing to take.

I'll be pretty annoyed if we go through this game of price chicken only for both XSX and PS5 (standard) to end up $499 - the price every reasonable person expected.

the point is if you are playing more than 1 game in a certain span of time you wont ever need to launch them (except when there is an update every week)

so you go from one standby game to another

I can see some use for this sort of functionality, but at the same time I wouldn't use it much or expect most to use it. If games start up really quickly anyway, and you can launch into the part you want from the dash, then it's mostly redundant. It's impressive and useful to some though, hopefully you can configure how much space it reserves for the functionality so that those who don't want to use it are not adversely affected.

As I said, since he is claiming that somehow sony has a proprietary solution that somehow overcomes known amd h/w limits,
there cannot be an amd NDA on that tech, since it's sony's "proprietary tech".
It would be reasonable to talk about it. Not him, but sony.
His second tweet "teaching" how to deflect such conversations is much more telling about the subject than his first tweet in my opinion, and the reason I pointed it out.

The teaching is about how to handle people who clearly don't want to know about the reality and have an agenda. They won't listen even in the face of evidence to the contrary. I don't see how pointing them to the reason we buy these things in the first place is a bad thing, and something many could do with thinking about more often. All the little hardware advantages, TF differences and I/O speeds in the world make very little difference if the end product - the games experience - doesn't demonstrate it.

There is a good sony patent paper on a Mesh type VRS especially for VR wide angle viewing which does things very differently for going FOV 90 to 120. You can find it with google.

Business wise it wouldn't make any sense. The demand for the PS5 seems so high that even 499 would sell like hot cakes. Therefore I think even if they drop the price 100 whatever currency the demand would not double. If I am Sony I would take the revenue of a 499 PS5

The dream is £350 and £400 respectively but that is why I have labelled it as such, it is too good to become true, I think £450 is a very reasonable price for the PS5, and I expect the XSX to match that going off the recent leaks.

Not everyone is actually looking to engage in honest discourse, and you don't have to engage every idiot with an agenda and an axe to grind. Pointing to games is more than a valid approach even if that's Microsoft's kryptonite.

I don't think there will be much of a difference between the DE and the full fat, to be honest. And DE is expensive at £399 when compared to $399 potential US price. Sony more likely to make sure both are expensive, but without a huge gap I think. Though your £449 is also perfectly reasonable as well.
