if you have an 8600k I'd just overclock it to 5ghz or close and wait for the next amd socket.
If you play in 4k you wont need a better cpu for a long time, unless you're planning to buy a 3080 to play in 1080p.

For reference a 3600 keeps pace at 4K with a 3080:

Shouldn't the very reason for a 3080 be 4k Gaming and, if so, doesn't this make the 3600 a steal of a CPU to have for 4K Gaming?

Ok so some more clarification for what I asked before. Is it viable to say, get a 3800X now, or even a cheaper 3700X, anything 8-core to keep up with current gen stuff decently for the first years. And upgrade on the same mobo/ram/whatever years later to something like a 5950X or whatever the last/most powerful compatible with X570 (or whatever I end up with for the 3XXX) CPU will be when that has not only launched but also dropped in price? Or will those probably not offer a meaningful upgrade and so you're better off starting to build a whole new system by then?

I'm just spoiled by my 3770K lasting me so many years, I'm eager for a belated upgrade but want it to last so maybe the next best option is to make 2 CPUs last that much if they can be bought for great prices with little hassle...

I mean, overclocking your current cpu would make it also future proof. The main reasons cpu like the 2600k remained valid for a long time, was also overclock.
Good enough because it's slightly slower than a 9/10k series 8 core at 1080p, but Still better than anything you can buy at that price.

If your stuff still functions for the tasks you need it to function for, then keep it. Don't go shopping for the sake of going shopping for stuff you don't need.

If streaming is not under your gaming uses... then the theory goes that 8 Zen3 cores should do pretty well throughout this generation because of the consoles. If you really don't think you'll branch out at all for other PC usage, then I don't see a big flaw there, just that it is likely that a 5700X will end up being a better value option.

There will be plenty of people at 1440p upgrading to a 3080 or similar, but yes the 3080 is at its best at 4K. The 3600 is very popular in DIY builds for good reason, but we can't exactly predict when 6C/12T will be insufficient. There is also DLSS which throws a bit of a wrench in the works. You're rendering at a lower resolution which allows for CPU speed to be more important and thus higher framerates... but also occupy (I think?) a relatively fixed portion of GPU time in order to upscale it.
How that plays out, alongside the extra weight of RT and CPU demands in the future is all very crystal ball stuff.

Very interesting. I'm still waiting to see once everybody benchmarks it how it compares to a 3700x(which regularly sells for $300) and a 3800xt. (Which I picked up recently for about $300 depending on how you calculate it. Yes, I can still return it if the 5600x is available and is overall a better chip.)

Maybe. The good thing with Ryzen is that the chips are relatively small (<100mm) vs what NVIDIA is shipping on the 3080 (628 mm) so AMD can get many more chips per wafer and will likely have much better yields as well especially since Zen 3 is going to be on a very mature process now.

I think the 5800x and 5950x maybe the hardest to find since they require all 8 cores to be fully functional on the CPU dies.

I'm gonna shoot for the 5950x as this will be my CPU for the next 4-5 years. I think it will be necessary as well if you want to push framerates past 60 fps as I expect developers to push next-gen games to the point were the current console Zen2 CPU's will struggle at 30fps.

Given my gsync monitors, I'm happy with 1440p and 144hz. I also have a 1080ti and it's still doing pretty well. I need to get rid of my 7740x CPU though. The 5800x will be perfect for me.

AMD is highly compatible to older motherboards, I can fix the 3k series to my 2k motherboard. Get a recent one, maybe of the premium range, currently X570 afaik. I am pretty sure my B450 will take a 5000-series aswell.

Seeing the performance of these CPUs, I'm thinking even the 5600X is more than enough. Getting an 8 core is more to be on the safe side. After all, the 5600X has 12 threads... I don't see that becoming an issue any time soon.

Not quite. This is a synthetic benchmark, and nobody is running their 10900K at only 3.7Ghz. The difference will almost certainly be smaller in games. I'm expecting equal performance at best. Still a great deal for the money, of course.
