If this game was anime style made by actual japanese then this thread would be full of 'ALL OVER MY FACE' posts. Weeaboos gonna hate.

I really like the animation, I just hope the game has enough characters in it-so far I've only seen two.
 
I'm all for new 2D games but this art is pretty horrific. I don't know if I can get past the looks. First of all, why are they all built like horses? giant thighs, skinny calves.

Sound the bad art alert.

Anyone that thinks this game looks bad visually needs to get their fucking eyes checked kay :D

You might not like the character design but the game is far faaaaaaaaaar from looking bad.

Considering its a psn/xbla exclusive fighting game of all things, it doesn't look too bad. I won't be buying it, but it isn't horrible, all things weighed. I don't think the art is all that bad honestly, but the execution is a fault. And yeah, the pic posted above pretty much sums up why screenshots sell games more than actual footage does, sadly. Taken completely out of context.

I think this looks phenomenal for a DD effort.

Anime backlash. Really all there is to it. I doubt 1% of people in that thread have even played Melty Blood, so all they can do is diss the art. BlazBlue get diss. Guilty Gear got dissed. Arcana Heart got dissed.

As for this game? I'll try it out. I support 2D HD sprites or whatever this stuff is that looks like sprites.

Can we at least take bets on whether or not it'll be as broke as MvC3 is? lol

But mvc3 is broken in a good way xD I'd say though with mike z on it, it should turn out pretty damn good.

no, I figure some people will like it, it's just not my bag.

I'll play it if the gameplay is good but those gameplay vids somebody posted on the first page look pretty bad.

The game lacks exciting effects for feedback. No dash trails or large hit sparks emphasize the 'alpha development' feeling I get from this game. Not to mention the sterile UI. This may simply be due to the early footage I'm seeing (the trailer not showing any UI doesn't help) so here's hoping that they're stuck in nice looking health/super bars.

On the bright side, the animation is excellent.

i've only scheme through some videos, the characters exhibit alot of animation during idle standing, like how the hair, boobs, accessories..etc moves. and it's in HD i assume, probably higher resolution than KoF's.

ppl should watch the vid at 720p, it looks very clean

Looks alright, I'll probably check it out once it is released. Have to admit though, I was secretly hoping that this was a port and name change of Phantom Breaker.

The animation looks great, and the will probably play just fine, but I can't get over the artstyle. It bugs the shit out of me.
 
I don't really get the complaints about the art style, the only thing that felt really, REALLY off to me is that, outside of the (well animated) fighting characters, there was really nothing else there.

It might just be cause it's not done yet, but players aside the game looks really really empty.


Background art-wise and special effects-wise.


Maybe it's just cause modern fighting games are so flashy or something, but this bothered me more than anything else.


Been following the main artist behind this for agees though, never expected to see the actual game get somewhere, but sometimes it happens I guess, hahah.

The art seems waaay too smooth for it, though I guess that might be cause it's downscaled a lot, but the sprite posted on the artists' DA ages ago wasn't that much bigger as far as I remember.

Looks like someone just used photoshop's colour dumper. The colours don't have many different shades per cel also it doesn't have that nice looking pencil drawn quality.

For me it's the uniformness of the colour that makes it look weird, will still play though.
 
Been a long road for this coming but I'm glad to see that we'll finally get to play it. I'll buy it for whatever it costs just to support Mike Z's opus. And it helps if the game has the potential to be the crack. We'll see how that part works out.

I gotta agree. The aesthetics are very nice and they really add individuality to each character which I have to assume was the point in the first place. And the hate for how it looks needs to be saved for something a lot more important, like how the game actually plays. I do understand the sentiment but again let's save the judgment for what really matters.

And it couldn't hurt to see it again in 720P if you didn't the first time.

Been following the artist and the game's development for a while, glad to see this finally coming soon. And I'm shocked at how irrational some of the hate here is. Using a single frame in mid-animation as an example of bad art? Really?

Incorrect. She's working on it, yes, but Alex Ahad (o_8) is the character designer and main artist.

As a fighting game fanatic, I see this as another game to sink my teeth into. The attack on the character designs is disgusting and unwarranted. Making constructive criticism is one thing, but freezing a frame during a special move to prove your point? That's just retarded.

That comment was in response to someone saying if it were authentic manga/anime done be real Japanese then we wouldn't have the complaints. You just further proved how wrong he was. Hell, Vanguard Princess is one of the best looking 2D fighting games recently made and half the comments in the thread were about how much they hated the art style.

As far as this game is concerned I've got to put myself firmly in the "do not like" camp in regards to the art direction. That's not a knock on the gameplay or the quality of animation. Just sayin', the same way Dust looked beautiful save its horrid western take on Japanese designs, this has the same stink to it.

It's a strange mix of comic/anime breed of the sorts. Though I'm curious if we'll see online with the game. Hopefully there's a demo. I'd like to see it on my tv first before putting out the almighty judgement hammer on it.

It's going to be interesting as this is white people / Western world's next big shot at proving they may not be rubbish at making fighting games after all! :X

Rare and Midway kept the fail trains running on time. Let's hope Mike Z. and company can save face!

On topic, the animation looks neat, reminds me of a Japanese fighter.

Why does GAF hate this game?

Other than the Guilty Gear esque animation it looks great.

I don't understand why so many fighting game developers still use pixel art when digital animation looks just as good if not better. I mean yes yes pixel art has a certain style and its traditional but its cost are insane.

EDIT - People are saying the animation looks good? The hell?

It's Spiderman movie all over again. I didn't like it when it came out, GAF wasn't hearing it. Ten years later GAF is willing to admit it wasn't as good as they made it out to be.

I've always hated Marvel Vs. games. GIVE ME MARVEL VS. DC!

Anyhow, I suspect the main reason people are pooping on this game is because it is a little girl / girly fighter and that is an odd choice given this is a Western developer.

Unfortunately little girls (and effeminate boys in BB) are what's keeping 2D fighters and shmups alive. :(
