It's just a matter of pinning down how they'll do it.

I just cant think of any live action adaption of One Piece which can make Luffy fight without looking way to ridiculous based on his gum gum power.
 
Tentatively excited despite the Netflix reputation

The writing is in good hands at the least. There was a leaked epispde 1 script about a year ago and they nailed the source material. Even fitting in some Easter Eggs that were only in Oda's SBS (where he takes questions from fans).

Though a lot could have changed since then. Its not some crazy unfaithful Death Note adaptation. And the lead writer is a mad One Piece fanboy who has appeared on a bunch of One Piece youtuber shows. At the very least the writer gets it

Casting will be the second most important thing and the CG/production. But at 10 million an episode they have the resources to do it justice

Yeah lol that will be one of the biggest challenges. And not just Luffy, but Zoro fighting with a sword in his mouth. Buggys powers. The fishmen. And that's just season 1

You have to see it like this:

Ruffy: will just be a normal asian martial artist with a gum skin that will fight like chun li with fists.
Zorro: Will be turned into a normal dual bladed swordsman.
Nami: Will be lesbian to please LGBT
Brook: Will be turned into a ghost pirate that looks a lot like Pirates of the caribbean
Chopper: They will just take the kid from "Sweet Tooth" and let him play chopper lol
Robin: will be the black actress that they need for the quota
Sanji: will be the hispanic cook of the crew that tries to get nami straight

....
 
This is going to be so freaking bad.
Even in competent hands and with a decent budget I struggle to see how one could adapt One Piece to live action without it loosing what made the anime/manga fun while simultaneously not making it a ridiculous looking cringe fest. But then you add Netflix and oh boy

Oda has named the nationalities of the characters if they were in our world and it seems like casting will try to follow that

  • Luffy (Brazil)
  • Zoro (Japan)
  • Nami (Sweden)
  • Usopp (Africa)
  • Sanji (France)
  • Chopper (Canada)
  • Robin (Russia)
  • Franky (America)
  • Brook (Austria)
I do expect they will 100% play down the sexiness of characters though. Which is fine, it mostly wouldn't fit. The only characters who need to be sexy are Nami and Boa
 
I love One Piece, but I don't see this turning out well. Hopefully the audio is Japanese with English subtitles. The Japanese voice acting for the anime is way better than the English.
 
i dont anime but i believe one piece is some long ass shit

i think a movie based on one piece will be about as good as a cupcake based on one piece

Those are all really great ideas. You should do casting for Netflix. They probably pay very well.

That has to be the worst looking "super power"

This is like the result of 'some people never learn', as it's underway like... we usually speak about these things after the film's been a giant disappointment and the fans are pissed at the makers... but it is just so guaranteed that Ryan Reynolds will make a shit luffy that there's no point even trying to be positive about this
 
This is not good news. One Piece has so many characters with a huge potential for Netflix to mess up with. I hope it fails on the first season.
 
As someone who is not into anime outside of the Ghibli films and a few other feature length films (well, maybe five or six of them) should I watch One Piece first or do you guys think it won't matter?

If you skip the fillers yes. The anime is in my opinion a good adaptation of the manga.

That never works. I remember when I was hyped about the Netflix Adaption of Death Note, we know how that turned out. At least the Japanese live action version was watchable.

There's a reason a lot of anime do not translate well to live action. The expressive, over the top, and fantastical nature many of them possess cannot be portrayed in live action.

This is such a stupid move, and is either a desperate attempt to cash in on one of the most popular brands in the world, or a deliberate attempt to dilute it. Regardless it is going to be terrible.

Gonna be another Dragonball Evolution.
