the Biden admin has said it's gonna be tougher on these large-scale acquisitions. Warner/Discovery is the biggest one on the horizon. if that goes through, i'd imaging this will have no issues.
at worst, MS might have to spin-off some divisions. my guess is they couldn't care less about King games.

This is such a bonkers deal with so many potential permutations. Gaming won't ever be the same, that's for sure.
I can't even begin to think how Sony can compete with this absolute juggernaut now. Microsoft surely won't deny themselves free money by developing cod for multiplatform either would they? Or do they simply force every cod casual into a MS ecosystem purchase and make their money that way.
Honestly fascinating how this has come about.

I know that MS did this to increase Gamepass value, and it will work, but I think Sony should start thinking what the fuck are they doing. Either they catch up or next gen they will pretty much be the third choice. They have quality games (besides the Marvel trash they keep trying to shove down our throats trying to ride the Marvel universe position), but now, it's not enough. Nintendo has the advantage of being Nintendo, but Playstation... man, what the fuck are you doing? While you're raising prices on your games, your competition is increasing their subscription service with more quality games.
I don't like this subscription business in everything, but I think this will eventually become the future. Jim, just fucking move.

I think now Take 2, EA or Epic would be candidates to counter this. But this would be in the case they would want to sell. Maybe without the controversy the Activision investors wouldn't have wanted to sell, but now for the it's an opportunity to clean the company or at least to 'buy' time.
It's going to be hard for Sony to compensate this unexpected superbold move.
Sony is leading in consoles sold, games sold for a console, gotys won in the last decade, game subscriptions, sales of 1st & 2nd party (but not at Nintendo level, but getting closer) or console VR, revenue of their gaming division with a nice growth and profit, etc.
Sure, this acquisition will shake up, change the market and will force Sony to improve and super likely to make some big acquisition (they already planned to continue with acquisitions and growing their internal teams). MS now will take a clear lead now in areas like PC, mobile, amount of top teams and IPs, eSports or in game division revenue.
If Spartacus is real, with the merge of PS Plus and Now they would start at 50M. I think with Activision Blizzard games now GP will skyrocket, so may soon reach these 50M and probably pass them, but it's fair to assume Spartacus will continue growing too since they are supposed to add more games from multiple generations and bringing it to mobile and smart tvs etc. I think that after a year or two, once all these changes are complete and get stabilized, Spartacus and Gamepass will compete having more or less similar numbers.
Regarding consoles, if all new Activision Blizzard and Zenimax games skip PS (which I think it's what we should assume) I think it will really push Xbox, but PS has a ~2X lead and will continue with their exclusives and all the other major 3rd parties. So I don't think they will pass them on consoles. Same goes with GOTYs/awards, I think MS will get closer but will continue behind.

MS want Game Pass on Sony and Nintendo hardware. In the end they will buy as many third party studios as it takes to reach that goal. In my opinion, Sony will probably relent soon if they can reach a fair financial agreement.

I’m not a fanboy, but I’m happy with this deal. Really happy. I hope it improves Blizz’s output.
I also hope Sony come out swinging. The industry needs competition, I have no desire to see PS fold.
And in reference to Sony fans screaming about this killing the industry and/or killing Playstation, many of you on GAF were chomping for Xbox to be shuttered over the past 8 years. Hold yourselves to a higher standard. The two need each other.

They might choose to do that. But, I doubt they would have to. Activision is still a small piece of the gaming industry (MS still just the 3rd largest player). With what Tenecent has been doing, I doubt there would be any limitations on anything. Gaming just isn't that regulated.

I'm truly curious as to where Sony goes from here. They can't compete in an arms race, but I can see them going on a spending spree for studios like From Soft.
They can't really re-focus on Japanese games either, given how dominated that market is by Nintendo.
I think that they may do a few minor purchases, but rather than going for the big fishes like Square, they will focus on expansing their own very successful first party studios.
