BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

Seems expensive but fills the FPS void that Playstation had.

Now Sony need to get Square Enix or Capcom and all bases are covered.

Wonder if there stance on platform only bullshit will hold up, keep it ps5/pc before holding strikes and shit back again

Bungie? What?

Is Destiny bigger than I think? I guess they bring that mass multiplayer game expertise Sony lacks. And they can completely save guard themselves if Microsoft removes COD.

I guess it makes sense. I was thinking more like Capcom.

Hot take: people said M$ overpaid for zenimax, but after this, can you really say that?

Anyways I like Bungie, their games have some of the best gunplay, so it's a good get, money is relative, in a few years Bungie could be worth a lot more so what we know right?

To be honest I'd have preferred if they had bought Capcom, Square Enix or even Atlus.

I don't really get why they'd buy Bungie. Perhaps so that Microsoft couldn't gobble them up too?
Indeed Bungie fit perfectly the only genre they are lacking. It's not a stupid move at all.

People are so focused on consoles that they never stop to think both Sony and MS are doing the same thing...in different ways: They both want people to enjoy their games without the need of their consoles. Bungie was a good get for that, for sure.

There's Capcom for 6-billions with IPs like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Dragon's Dogma, Lost Planet, Ghost n Goblin

....and Jim Ryan chose Bungie with one mediocre IP for 3.6B?!?!?!....this guy is so stupid!!

I said they have around 6 b to spend for the division in 3 years....they probably spend 2 years of investiment in one ....what's wrong with you?....3.6 are very very different from buying EA lol wake me up if they buy another studio / publisher for another 3b ..then moke me
You did not. You were wrong like everyone was saying.

Why people doesn't understand this acquisition?

Sony was starving for fps and now you have the second\third most important fps franchise after cod\battlefield, sony shareholders here on gaf must be pretty happy with this.

They literally bough what they were missing and maybe destiny 3 is gonna finally have decent writing\plot\graphic for once.

Not sure if i personally care for bungie but the acquisition make all the sense in the world.

I don't think many are questioning the acquisition itself, Bungie are more than competent to fill the hole shaped FPS missing in the Sony Catalog. It's the PRICE that people are baffled by.

Bro so they now own DESTINY how big is that ? LOL
A lot of people laugh when Destiny gets brought up but time and time again Destiny has been the leading example of (missteps included) of how to do a GAAS, and it's simply one of the most fun shooters to play till this day and has one of the highest active user bases for an older title, this is a solid get for Sony.

Can I just say as well that the big 3 buying beloved studios like Bathesda, Bungie and ID is absolutely the best case scenario. If Bungie had fallen in to Google, Amazon, Tencent or Apple's hands I'd probably never play another of their games (unless they stayed multiplat, and if it was Tencent I wouldn't play regardless).

Yes....they bought bungie....to make....multiplatform games.....
Only destiny 2, new games are gonna be exclusive, exactly like cod after 2023.

If not, then they just chose a different way comapred to M that is happy to renounce at 70 dollars per copy just to attract people on gamepass.

They are still gonna make a fuckload of money with bungie games, and since people in here defend stuff that only a shereholder can defend (coff crossgen games coff) i don't see why the negativity.

Depends how crazy they go with MT could fill that CoD gap when D3 launches in 4years or so

Man, talk about predictable posts.

It's a nice get but just because it isn't a giant company there's the obvious downplaying.

I don't care that much about Destiny but I could see them making a new killer IP. Sony doesn't waste their strength and it's hard to argue this not being a power move.

Yes, it's not them buying EA, Ubisoft, or Lake Titicaca.

It's definitely a response of sorts; I mean you don't go after Bungie of all studios knowing the legacy they have with Halo (and in turn the legacy that has with Xbox).

I think it's all a bit funny on one level, like a soap opera playing out through acquisitions. Light-hearted humor on my part. Strategically speaking though, it's a smart acquisition for PlayStation. Helps solidify their MP side of content, gives them a good cash cow in Destiny (which IIRC is going to remain multiplatform after the deal closes), and gives them a shot at reinventing a legacy IP like Killzone or making a new FPS IP (or maybe a third-person MP over-the-shoulder shooter, if they want).

Also just remembered Bungie own the IP rights to Oni. Anyone remember that? Was an early PS2/Mac/PC game. Never played it but was impressed with the style at the time.

Kind of crazy the downplaying going on TBH, people pretending Bungie are nobodies 😂.

I'm very interested to see what Sony and Bungie do going forward (and similarly, Microsoft with the COD studios, iD etc.).

The video games industry is now certified:

HILARIOUS.

Good for Sony, though. It's a solid buy.

New exclusive FPS from the makers of Halo, to challenge CoD?

I should fucking coco.

Keeping Destiny multiplatform is fine, problems occur in the future when Bungie games are gated. I'd rather the acquisition shit calms down to be honest. I hope apart from the revenue it generates is that Bungie provide help with Sony Studios making first player shooters. That would make the most sense.

So making GaaS games? Jesus I was hoping that shitty genre died in a fire after a few of those awful abortions came out.

Unless they're somehow going to evolve what GaaS games are.

This is just a really bad time for videogames.

Its not so much about FPS, especially if theyre staying multiplatform. Its more about Sony not having an MMO style game that continuously brings in money via expansions, costume packs, weapons, loot boxes and the such. This will presumably generate money for them in the long run assuming Destiny and anything else bungie assumely produces as an MMO.
Well that also but all PlayStation studios share tech, ideas and talent… and old IPs
Also that doesn't mean they can't release exclusives now and then

I dont buy all this multiplatform nicey nicey talk.

They are competitors. They both want the same pie, there is going to be blood.

I don't think many are questioning the acquisition itself, Bungie are more than competent to fill the hole shaped FPS missing in the Sony Catalog. It's the PRICE that people are baffled by.
Last major FPS studio/franchise on the market? If there was a pool of 100 studios then Sony could have dictated a price. This was basically last chance saloon for Sony, which drives the price up. Even games like Halo struggle to retain mindshare from CoD. Killzone, Resistance, SOCOM? Forget about it, they'd flounder embarrassingly. Sony would have been desperate to get this done.
