Technically it says less than 1% but even I agree with you. Near 1% of 180k employees means 1,800 people losing their jobs and that's not an insignificant number.

I know, I know...I was once one of those proponents of keeping at least a lengthy delay between console launch and PC release. And honestly, I think they should probably still do that. But I think the supply issues have hit a point where gamers should be encouraged to pursue PC setups that can outpace the new gen of consoles graphically. I mean, it's almost 2 years post-launch now. I can't buy a PS5, but I can probably cobble together a competitive HTPC. I already bought a laptop that's really close, so PC gamers can definitely put together competent rigs. Xbox games will all come to PC, and now most PS games will too. Anything you can't get there you can get via PS+. So raising the price on the console makes sense for Sony, but savvy gamers can definitely pursue other avenues with confidence now.

I did not say that they need or need not to buy studios, I said that so far they preferred to either secure very long term partners (Bluepoint, Insonmiac, Sucker Punch, etc…) and to then grow them organically (they are still hiring and expanding) vs buying studios and publishers to simply expand share.
With Bungle they veered off of that track to expand in the live services arena they lacked experience off and ensured they would remain multiplatform. So?
Still ignoring the economic angle and trying to compare $5 Billion vs $70 Billion purchases I see…

Cross subsidy between divisions of a company is hardly breaking news, MS obviously see profits in the long run or they wouldn't invest.
I seriously doubt anyone saying at Sony we need to raise hardware prices because MS purchased Bethesda, they are doing it to protect margins in an inflationary market, nothing more nothing less.

Microsoft allow you to buy digitally from other regions as well and then you can redeem the codes through a free VPN on your browser while logged in to your main account. It leads to games like Elden Ring costing £24 on release day for Xbox. They really don't want to put themselves in this corner as the market isn't as loyal as they think. As soon as TeS 6 or Avowed starts getting rave reviews people will happily look the other way, like they did with the 360.

My argument is that there are some here desperate to turn this into some console warrior narrative and that only works by side stepping the fact that there's a global economic downturn coupled with soaringing inflation. In my country, our government has openly admitted that some of our population will literally freeze to death this winter because they can't meet the rise in energy costs.
And the UK is the fourth richest country in the world... There is context here that some are wilfully ignoring to push a console warrior narrative.

The PS5 has been massively underpriced for the last two years. The market value of a PS5 was $700-750 for about two years and only went down recently. Sony believes the market will bear a higher price than $499, so let's see how that goes especially if the competition doesn't increase prices.

Basically, Sony blew off both it's feet by doing this. The console is hard to get as it is (produced units-wise) and now it'll be harder to get also for a lot of people money-wise.

I am not saying it is news, it is a legal (still) business tactic. It is what it is: you are outspending your competition to ensure you conquer the pie in the end as you decided the total pie is worth investing in (which means you will want to recoup the investment once you have won that market over and you control it
).The more money you invest from other divisions in terms of absolute subsidies vs your competition can cause competitors that were competitive not to en able to be anymore due to not a lot of fault of their own, this is not to excuse Sony here but you do concede as a point that subsidies can do this or see we still pretending they do not?
It is not just that but recession, inflation, profit margins increase to protect long term sustainability and keep investors happy, etc… are real things… oh no, simpler to just keep an "Evil Greedy Sony" angle. Again, if you think that plopping $100 Billion range money out of thin air from other divisions does not change things you are will fully deciding to ignore things, oh well…

Being an early adopter pays off for once! Call me cynical but this increase just ahead of what i expect to be a sizeable drop of holiday availability?
At the end of the day, they must have highly paid analysts costing this out, but to everyone who bought from a scalper this is what happens. If people buy a product at inflated prices, then the company will eventually charge those markups, because why not?
Be interesting to see if this has a domino effect of smaller increases as well for the other console manufacturers. I do think this is missing the mark though, the console market is not a premium market, that's PC. A console has always been a relatively expensive one time purchase for a lot of families but affordable. Pushing the hardware price up, about to drop what we all expect to be an expensive step up in VR, the price raise on games is kind of pushing the package or ecosystem into unaffordable for core markets imo.
For the likes of us on this forum, it won't really be an issue. Most of us seem to have steady jobs, good management of personal finance etc. probably a lot of us are considering the PSVR2 in all honesty. But equally even we are baulking at some of these things, families from the backgrounds a lot of us came from are just not going to buy in. I know there are competing strategies out there and Sony have committed to local device, high production titles but pushing that console experience into a premium cohort of consumers is not the right move imo. The timing is also really off coming up to holiday. Waiting until after New Year would have been better.

I don't do any off that stuff, I always worry about marketplace theft bans, since when people got injustice 1 free changing regions etc. (But I do change region to buy region exclusive games raiden 4/bullet soul infinite burst, as raiden 4 is region locked on 360, but completely region free on Xbox one/series consoles & this doesn't require vpn either)
Plus I prefer hard copies, what you can get fairly cheap anyway, I got elden ring day one for £35 at Amazon, no idea why it was so cheap.
& I use thegamecollection what seem to have reasonable prices for day one games.
Also for all my UK buddies, if you use the Amazon app, you can use code APP10UK & get £10 off a preorder, so you can get the series X version of Callisto Protocol for £35 and the ps5 version for £33!
I personally went for dark tide for £19.99 though

not gona defend that price increase, but i think its cause of demand of PS5, here in Finland u cant find PS5 in anywhere except from scalpers and some nut stores for like 900€

I must confess i can't see the mechanism behind how MS investments in Xbox will prevent Sony from continuing to make, market and sell games.

Ok, so if one can find cheaper prices than Sony SRP in any store it invalidated the argument around their price increases? I do not honk it is fair to say that their games are £35 in the U.K. that is all.
I'm not too mad at them increasing the prices due to various factors out of their control....but this is why I was against the prices hikes before inflation/war hit when they were making record breaking profits. Anyone who brought it up was brushed off as not "supporting developers" or "games should already cost more" or whatever the fuck excuses people would make for game prices increases.

Because this is not an isolated thing where Sony went insane and just raised prices, so with macro economical shift you need to also look at what is the competition doing and why they can afford to do so or not. Otherwise we can keep on a "anti consumer vs pro consumer" level discussion and throw rotten fruit at each other all day…

And of course we had NDS which increased price with every new SKU practically, but that helped ppl swallow it a bit better.
