Did you know that a pigeon earned the medal Croix de guerre, with a palm Oak Leaf Cluster for his heroic service.

This is Simon the Able Seacat. He served on HMS Amethyst (as shown on the collar) and was rewarded medals for hunting vermin onboard the ship and of course his behaviour of the highest order! His greatest achievement was defeating the rat known as Mao Tse-tung who was eating food supplies.

There were many methods used to win the war against the Nazis and it doesn't surprise me to see animals served. Brown bears on the whole tend to have a reputation for being aggressive, but Wotjek here doesn't appear to be extremely tall, hence why many soldiers weren't afraid of him.
 
You know bees have been used in war? The Greeks and The Romans would load nests onto catapults and fire them at their enemies. In Nam, the Vietcong would put wasps nests on trails they knew were being patrolled. In Iraq there was some lunatic who wanted to train bees to sniff out explosives. Luckily the generals stepped in and put a stop to that guy.

That's fine. I didn't mean to disregard decades/centuries of scientific categorization or to disrespect the cat's accomplishments.

I bet that rat left a bunch of Mao Tse-dung in the storeroom

Not sure if being tall matters at all when he can probably rip your head off with a light slap, bears are strong AF.

True, but some of the other subspecies grow to around 7-8 feet tall and several hundred pounds heavier. Given Wotjek's size, the Polish officers clearly weren't afraid of him, though he could shred their face with a claw swipe. Take this huge muscular Russian bear on the other hand, fuck wrestling with him:
