SCORN will be the first PC game to support DirectStorage

The H.R. Giger-inspired first-person game, SCORN, will release next month and according to Ebb Software, it will support DirectStorage on PC.

So with Forespoken being delayed, Scorn took it's place to become the first game to be released with this new tech.
But with it's more linear and closed off levels, it might not be as useful or impressive as with an open world game such as Forespoken.

Eh, I guess I'll have my test with whatever comes next then, since I'm genuinely not interested in this one.

All that I've seen of the gameplay seems extremely dull and I find the setting/art style genuinely gross and off putting.

Considering that this is an indie studio, with a relatedly small team, it's quite impressive they managed to already implement Direct Storage.
This probably means that it's not that hard, at least not on Unreal Engine 4. So we might expect to see more and more games adopting the tech. Hopefully.

Nothing we've seen of the game feels like it should need any extra new tech to operate well. It looks grotesque, but not that technically demanding.

That depends entirely on how it's used. But yes, in cross-gen games, or games that also need to work on PCs without support for it, you're right, it won't be transformative. But it CAN be, if a game is ever made without compromising for lesser hardware. We haven't seen that yet (except to a lesser degree in R&C, but that was really only scratching the surface of what's possible).

We can use the VR injector into this game and experience it in VR!

That alone made me a garanted buy;when modable ofcourse.

OT: Im rocking 13TB of local storage on my PC currently; Im a horder I know, So direct storage isnt going too change much for me... But I can see this having great effect on systems such as remote controlled / xbox sticks too work well with this tech?
Another step forward for thoose console less days for MS I guess?

Yeah, but no game (including Dirt 5) has actually used direct storage so far. Average loading time on Xbox is something like 5-10 seconds.

Nope. Handled different with decompression blocks and the like.

There are still extraction layers on the PC, even with Direct Storage, which is why zlib/Krakken compression won't work as efficiently.

But it's definitely a game changer on the PC and their I/O kernels on top of kernels on top of kernels.

SSDs have been mainstream on PC for over 15 years. And nvme drives have already existed on PC for close to a decade. RTX/IO compatible GPUs were released in 2018.
Despite all of this it took this long to get this feature. So yes, MS is slacking off. Hard.

They aren't bottlenecks because games are not made in a way that would make them bottlenecks, because nobody wants to make a game that wouldn't work for people with slower storage. Once someone targets ONLY setups with fast storage they'll be to do stuff we haven't seen yet. But right now that's really only realistic for non-cross-gen console exclusive, and they mostly don't exist yet either.

You don't make any sense. There are games that take 5 to 20+ seconds to load on PS5, doesn't mean they aren't using the new storage API. Different engines, different games load differently and just because they take longer to load does not mean they aren't targeting the new API.

No it hasn't. They been doing it using the legacy API and is easily verified by comparing loading times between PC and Xbox on first party Microsoft titles. Here is one example:



Show me a single game that loads much faster on Xbox than it does its PC port. When Direct Storage was benchmarked with Forspoken it moved around 70% more data per second using Direct Storage vs the old Win 32 API.
