If, relative to the other games that came out in the year that Fortnite released (we'll say specifically the Battle Royale mode), Fortnite is the game that holds up the best however many years later, then yeah... It would be the best game of whatever year it came out. That makes more sense than naming a flash in the pan your game of the year, when people will go back and play it in the future and see that it just doesn't hold up.
Agree to disagree, a 6 hour game can be goty if it is good enough.

Before the open world/big ass games era it was not strange to have 8-10 hours games as goty.

Nintendo and Bethesda already went toe-to-toe in 2011, which the latter won, but then we had one of the most meh Zelda to date (Skyward Sword) versus a revival of open-world RPGs and cultural behemoth (Skyrim).

Not sure the same situation applies in 2023 though. TOTK is unreal and improves significantly upon one of the best games of all time, surpassing it and becoming one itself, whereas Starfield looks amazing but something tells me it won't completely deliver. At least not Skyrim-levels.

With a forced 30 fps framerate?

Let's do GOTY divided into FPS categories. Zelda will win in 25 FPS category, Starfield in 30, SM2 in 60 and everyone will be happy.

To clarify, by flash in the pan, I meant a game that's very hot very briefly. As in, temporarily popular.

Shorter games can absolutely be Game of the Year.

This doesn't seem based in reality
Nah, your alzheimers forgot what that game was at launch. The only good story youll find there is the one you make on your own, not the one the game provides. Also, its fighting system is abysmal. Good exploration and setting though.

That still win previous Game of the Year awards.

I am never gonna be so desperate as to be validated by the gaming press. Its obvious that gameplay mechanics is not the main reason for a goty award. Bethesda RPGs are always amazing potential brought down by technical and gameplay limitations. Half baked amazing ideas translated well into a graphical plane but never a mechanical one. Its why Todds pitch works everytime.

It'll be a battle between Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy XVI, Starfield, probably Diablo 4, Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy or Jedi Survivor.

96% Metacritic with reviews from 89 press outlets, and somehow they all conspired to heap praise on a game with 'bad story and mediocre gameplay'.

Zelda, Startfield, FF XVI, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Street Fighter, Spider 2, Resident 4, Hi-Fi Rush...

Everybody doing great!

What a year!!

It's a hell of a lot more than just "more BOTW". In almost every regard TOTK has superceded anything and everything BOTW did. Everything that earned BOTW its original GOTY award.

Unless Starfield releases and has game devs creaming themselves on social media, asking how the hell Bethesda was able to create the game like they were asking Nintendo about TOTK (re: fusion and physics), GOTY is firmly in TOTK's camp.
I think you're severely underestimating how complex Bethesda games really are. They were doing the kind of gameplay BotW did before that was even a spermatozoid in miyamoto's balls.

It'll be a battle between Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy XVI, Starfield, probably Diablo 4, Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy or Jedi Survivor.

All great games but I don't see Jedi Survivor or Hogwarts. Above them there is sitll Resident 4, Street Fighter, Hi-Fi Rush... Probably Baldur's Gate, Mortal Kombat as well.

Anyway, such a great year!

I really don't see a world where TOTK doesn't win the big awards. It is considered by many to be the greatest game of all time already.

I don't particularly agree but you can't deny it has a level of sandboxiness with the physics no one has really seen before as far as ultrahand and the building stuff goes.

Starfield I will probably like more simply because I like the sense of discovery - which for me TOTK lost a little from BOTW. I don't know why it did - but it just did. Still cool, but not as much as the first time playing BOTW.

And I don't think there is a game out that does all of what starfield does.

No Man's Sky does part of it but it has no real narrative and there's not any bespoke, handcrafted stuff to discover - so I find it totally boring.

Star citizen does a lot of it - but its going for a realistic simulation vibe which makes it play completely differently - plus it's unfinished and will probably remain unfinished.

Elite dangerous is cool with the ships and travel - but again, like no man's sky it gets kinda boring due to the lack of any interesting storylines or characters to follow.

It's really closest to other Bethesda games which no one else seems to replicate completely. But it's a bethesda game layered on top of one of these vast space games, which, up until now, have been almost completely devoid of any type of traditional narrative.

Not even saying the storylines and characters in BGS games are that good, but they're there in a way that's fun and engaging enough to pull you into it.

Can't have a perfect memory. There are just too many great games this year. I didn't mention RE4 because it's a remake and there is a discussion of whether remakes should be eligible for GOTY, so I avoided mentioning it. Street Fighter 6 is an AMAZING GAME for both FGC veterans and newbies alike, but fighting games are more niche, so you know the drill. Hi-Fi Rush made some fuss with the shadowdropped but I don't think it'll get nominated. Baldur's Gate 3 is BIG and could easily be a candidate.

Man I just knew I wanted this after the direct and when I saw 16% off on the price (thaks GMG!), I couldnt pass up and pre-ordered it. Now the wait begins.

From the looks of the deep dive its got the biggest chance outside of totk but I think it will be totk.

I wonder if the Xbox version will allow mods or the pc store xbox version.

I think they will all win something somewhere - I don't totally get the Hi fi rush thing - but yeah. I think Jedi deserves a shot it's very very good, armored core looks great as well and Ff16 shaping up to be amazing - it's a good year

It's a great year for everyone and I think it will be a close race between the nominees.

Hi-Fi is on my list, I thought it has very innovative mechanics, a cool story, beautiful animations, something different from the usual. And the critics liked it too, it's the 4th best game of the year according to OpenCritic, only behind Zelda, Resident and Street Fighter. For all this I think it will be nominated, but it won't be a surprise if not with so many strong competitors.

Also loved Jedi Survivor, it's great and beautiful, but I found it very similar to the first, without much innovation.

As for who will win, I'd say Zelda is the favourite, but in such a strong year, anything can happen.

Todd, I will play your game. Calm down. The game has been validated by the press so you can stop taking meds. I have an opinion that differs, it does not invalidate yours or others. Im happy theres different perspectives, now lower the gun.

I had zero interest in this game, I'm one of the few people in the world who didn't enjoy Skyrim or Elder Scrolls, with the exception of online. But it's very ambitious, collecting a lot of gaming concepts into 1 package. If they can pull it off and deliver the countless hours of enjoyment from Elder Scrolls. This game could take game of the year. But there are a lot of moving parts, and they aren't known for bug free releases. They need to deliver at launch. The content appears to be absolutely crazy. If the combat is steady, who knows. I'm interested now.

I'm still playing TotK after a week of forced break, and it's really amazing. So much magic to it. discovery. If the can achieve that with Starfield it might have a chance. Zelda just gives you moments you'll remember after you played the game.

Todd said there would be the same mod support as previous games so that would include console (like there is in FO4). At the very least there will be CC support since it's a large source of income.

I don't think anything has changed and mod support is key for the game's longevity.

My only concern with starfield is the procedurally generated stuff. I've never liked it. It seems like a concept often used to fluff out an otherwise content-barren game.

No doubt in my mind that Starfield will have lots of content, but it could be a mile wide inch deep scenario where there isn't much of a unique experience to be drawn from underneath it's service.

But I'm still positively excited. The deep dive exceeded my expectations. Not by much, but still.

ToTK however is still in an entirely different league (better) as of now. I'd like to play SF for at least a couple weeks before I make a proper judgement.

Exactly. That will be the difference maker here. TotK is just more of the same.
I kind of agree. I haven't played TotK in well over a week. Seems very boring. Puzzles suck. Not much in the world except the same enemies, rocks, flowers and that's about it. Very barren. The people who are out there are so generic and never say anything of value. You pretty much know what to expect around every turn.

Well, Spiderman 2 is more of the same.......so the Nintendo fanboys will pick Zelda, the Sony fanboys will pick FFXVI, Xbox fanboys will pick Starfield. Since there are more Nintendo fanboys out there than Sony or Xbox, it's obvious Zelda will win.

Dorito Pope has already sent the trophies to Nintendo.

Anything else coming after it is just there to complete the runner-ups list.
