There is no future for this thing. I'm sure internally at Sony, it's already in the "Dead, No Longer Supported" files. Maybe it would have been wise at launch to make it work with Playstation Plus. That would have been something at least and they may have gotten subs off of people who don't own a Playstation 5, converting them in the long term.

You dont need to leave ur Playstation on. The device wakes up the console when you turn the PS Portal on. Same way you can turn on the console by pressing the PS button on a DS controller.

Well that's just it: lots of people will buy it, which is why I guess they're making it.

But IMO it's such a wasted opportunity for a genuine PS4 Portable, even if that would've costed 2x the price. Value proposition of native PS4/PS2/PS1 (maybe also PSP & some Vita) games on the go & Remote Play for PS5 games (& cloud streaming too) would've been great arguments towards the additional cost on production and MSRP.

Would've also been something to really galvanize PS software sales in places like Japan, too. Cross-gen PS4/PS4 releases would ensure new game releases for a while 100% compatible on a PS4 Portable, too (or getting PS4 ports of certain 3P Switch games that don't have PS4 versions, particularly in Japan, since there'd now be a new PS portable that could run those games and with better visual & framerate settings).

I think It works exactly like remote play would work using a tablet or phone. It's just all included in one dedicated device.

PlayStation Portal is just an extension of what has been exciting on PS for years. I can see their new cloud initiative they release next year will see some light on some other device or TV's and smarthphones.

Unlike consoles it's a product with high profit margin so low sales don't mean it's a failure.

Yeah if this thing connected directly via Wi-Fi w/o a router, they'd have just said so in the blog lol

PS Link is an audio tech. The only thing it has to do with the Portal is that the Portal includes the ability to connect to a PS Link device (headset/earbuds) w/o a dongle.

Sony choosing to market all of this at once seems to be causing some confusion with people talking to reps, but the blog is pretty clear on this.

OK so I'm guessing it'll just determine the connection with a priority listing depending on proximity. PS Link when closer to the system, regular wifi when not.

And as far as internet connection being required is concerned...that's only true in a sense. I don't think the Portal is using data over the network with PS5 the way PS5 does with web-based apps. So, it shouldn't count towards any data-caps when using Remote Play either via PS Link or regular wifi; the "server" (PS5) is on the same network as the "client" (Portal).

Still think this should've been a PS4 Portable though. I mean c'mon.

The more I think about it, the more I think this might be a good product for me. I love my PS5 and I have my man cave. There are times I like to go in to my room and have my gaming time to myself, but .... there are also times when I want to be in the living room with my wife and kid in close proximity. I can game and they can watch TV. Its a win win and 200 bucks isnt really that bad. I mean damn the elite controller costs more than that if I remember correctly.

Also, would love to take to the beach and play my PS5 without having to haul my PS5. Fucking win!

You and me have literally the exact situation when it comes to a product like this. We have a 3-year-old now. And she demands way more of my time than my wife ever did. I'd love to finish Little Nightmares II sometimes this year, but it's hard when your daughter wants you to watch her build a castle for her Barbie downstairs.

Sorry, my Far Cry mention was a bit vague - it was New Dawn, which I don't think ever got updated past 1620p30. Then the PS5 Remote Play squishes that down to 1080p30, which in turn because of the horrible compression artifacts looks more like 720p30 at times. Just jank.

You could've used the Sega CD as an audio CD player back in the day, so it still had a use-case outside of games. Quality CD players in the early '90s costed a fortune.

WTH is wrong with NPD guy? Even a 1% attach rate would be GREAT for this device. He makes it seem like a single digit attach rate would be bad lol. By time the Portal drops, there would be 50 million PS5s sold. If it sold to 1% of PS5 gamers, that would be 500,000 units sold.

It's just a MUCH BIGGER endeavor to develop / market / sell an actual portable console.

You have to dedicate a ton of R&D and you don't really know how it will turn out, you now have 2 devices to support w/ SDK's and dev support and 1st party support, etc.

I get that it's what you want, but that's just not a risk Sony wants to take.

Game streaming probably does tie into their lack of plans for a real portable too. For now, they are focused solely on PS5 sales.. and that singular focus is working for them financially. Dev'ing a new mobile platform represents a pretty big risk TBH.

There's zero indication that it doesn't.
Wifi direct connections were a thing on all Sony consoles with a wireless antenna - and both PSP and Vita did RP just fine without routers.
