But IMO it's such a wasted opportunity for a genuine PS4 Portable
All 3 console manufacturers will have a native portable by next gen at the latest. The market for PC handhelds is exploding. People clearly want them.
But IMO it's such a wasted opportunity for a genuine PS4 Portable
I travel a lot and I always leave all my stuff on standby and I don't turn the router off. I must be doing it wrong.People who travel rarely leave video game consoles in stand by mode. Or leave the router on for that matter. If you’re going away for anything other than a short period, you turn all that shit off.
And fuck me, if you’re travelling, you want something you can play while you’re travelling. Try using that stupid fucking thing 38,000 feet up.
Since when did Remote Play, which is even more niche than cloud gaming, suddenly have broader appeal? This is news to me.
You wanna know what has real broad appeal? A portable PlayStation that can natively play PS1, PS2, and PS4 games on the go AND Remote Play & cloud stream PS5 games.
That's actual broad appeal. Not whatever PlayStation Portable is.
To be fair we expected it to include basic features, like Blue Tooth.Better than all the mouth breathers who said it'd be north of $300.
Let's throw in PSP, PS3 and Vita libraries and I am prepared to pay $500!Since when did Remote Play, which is even more niche than cloud gaming, suddenly have broader appeal? This is news to me.

Yeah if this thing connected directly via Wi-Fi w/o a router, they'd have just said so in the blog lol
PS Link is an audio tech. The only thing it has to do with the Portal is that the Portal includes the ability to connect to a PS Link device (headset/earbuds) w/o a dongle.
Sony choosing to market all of this at once seems to be causing some confusion with people talking to reps, but the blog is pretty clear on this.
Alright brother, I gave it a shot and figured I'd get back to you.I went with the app since I was out of town. I haven't done the PC version yet but I know some people use it to cheat trophies like some weirdo losers.
Considering that this thing by itself is meant to go with the PS5 the basic price isn't even 200 dollars as much as it is 600 in the same way that a PSVR2 without a PS5 is basically 900 dollars.
So if we're talking that way, you might as well get a Steam Deck or ROG Ally.

PlayStation Project Q is now called PlayStation Portal, a $200 handheld device that lets you stream your PS5 games via Remote Play. We went hands-on to see how it works.www.ign.comPlayStation Portal Hands-On: I Played Sony's New PS5 Handheld
Coming later this year for $200, the new remote player is a worthy extension of the PlayStation 5 console.www.cnet.comPlayStation Portal: Hands On With Sony's New Remote Play Handheld - The Global Herald
IGN published this video item, entitled "PlayStation Portal: Hands On With Sony's New Remote Play Handheld" - below is their description.theglobalherald.com

Key Notes from Previews:
- Portal has a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a small set of speakers that are passable but nothing special. There is no Bluetooth available, so you won’t be able to connect to wireless headphones that way – not even PlayStation’s own Pulse 3D headset.
- Portal doesn’t run anything locally, not even basic apps. So if your Wi-Fi goes down or if someone else wants to use your PS5, it’s not going to work
- The device has a 60Hz, 8-inch LCD display. PlayStation says this size is the sweet spot for long gaming sessions, keeps text legible and won't leave the player feeling like they're downgrading.
- The Portal is light, probably somewhere between a Switch and a Steam Deck.
- Games like Astro's Playroom and Returnal plays like playing directly on the PS5 console.
- No lag experienced when playing games (by previewers)
- No definitive battery life was given but the company is targeting something similar to the DualSense controller's,

Mate what is this? You buy the controller for the console, not the other way around. This is nothing but a controller.Considering that this thing by itself is meant to go with the PS5 the basic price isn't even 200 dollars as much as it is 600 in the same way that a PSVR2 without a PS5 is basically 900 dollars.

Absolutely stunning to see everyone scramble for excuses now it’s sub 200 ,
Day one
The headsets are planar magnetic too which is an awesome surprise
It is?! Or is this just on NeoGAF?The market for PC handhelds is exploding. People clearly want them.
You can't be serious, they needed to name it something short yea but project Q says nothing about the device. Playstation handheld, Playstation wireless, Playstation untethered. Something like that would have been much better. The name is a mouthful, should have stuck with something snappy like Project Q.

Something like that
Playstation Portal itself is decent, the other words after that can be chopped.
Doesn't looks like it.. The Dualsense *Edge sticks are clearly modular, while these do not seem to detach in any similar way.Mildly interested, but need to see more. Is the stick module replaceable? Better to save that 200 bucks to day one PS5 pro.
Yeah the attach rate statements are dumb when you're talking in terms of 100million console sales. I'm sure they would be pretty happy to sell 5 million of these by the end of the generation.WTH is wrong with NPD guy?
£200 to stream a game from one device to another.. So Essentially a £200 invisible HDMI cable. Your deluded if you think it’s a steal your actually getting robbed. This is Sony branded, you just don't understand.
200 is a steal!
Strange product, imo. Seems like quite a hard sell to me. Must surely be a gamble for Sony, I almost wonder if this is an experiment that ended up working better than they expected and they've decided to do a limited run and see if people respond to it.
I wouldn't be surprised if this sells out.
(Does it even come with a 3.5 headphone jack?)
Which means you can probably just get a 3.5BT transmitter adapter and connect Bluetooth headphones to it. That's an easy and cheap workaround. I believe that was necessary for switch early on. It will probably have the same latency but it's a $15 solutionIt also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio.

future? has to be at launch, if not this thing is dead on arrival tbh.Hardware wise, what's stopping Sony from adding cloud capabilities with this thing in the future?
Exactly, people should know what they are talking about...
You don't even need a Router in your house to use this....
The device can make a direct wireless connection (Playstation Link) with the PS5 console while you are in your house
Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore can simultaneously connect to a PlayStation Link supported device (PS5, PC, Mac, or PlayStation Portal) and a Bluetooth supported device. For example, Pulse Explore can be connected to PS5 (via the USB adapter) using PlayStation Link and also to a mobile phone through Bluetooth at the same time. While playing on PS5, gamers can instantly answer a call and hear it through the same Pulse Explore earbuds.
That is a very small target audience. I don't think it will pull some sizable numbers until or unless people find some other use out of it.The last question I know a lot of people are wondering is, who exactly is this device for? It's $200 for a remote-access window into your PS5. At that price, honestly, I kinda get it. The Portal is unlikely to be someone's primary way to play PS5 games – that's what your TV is for. But for times when someone else wants to use the TV, or maybe you have small kids in the home and don't want to put God of War on the big screen, and maybe you just want to be able to play in a different room without buying another full-on TV. In that scenario, the Portal offers a compelling use case. And while it's not quite as portable for on-the-go gaming as a Switch or Steam Deck, it's less expensive and it does let you keep playing your PS5 while out of the house, so long as your destination has decent internet connectivity. You just probably shouldn't count on hotel Wi-Fi being strong enough to handle the connection.
