Spider-Man 2 | Preview Thread

The preview I clicked was glowing. Didn't expect that, you could just as easily say it looked great and if you liked Spider-Man you would love this game.

Previews are previews and basically they're to build hype at the end of the day. That being said, what I saw of the game yesterday looked really good.

I really hope they can find a way to make things feel a little less repetitive. I got about 15 hours into the first and dropped off it pretty hard.

I played both the PS4 (100%) and PS5 (story Plus dlc) versions of Spider-Man, but literally only fast-traveled once, for the trophy. Loading was instant though.

I've played about 2 hours of Miles Morales; stopped because I had just finished Arkham Origins and they're just too similar of general gameplay for me to have played back-to-back and I don't like playing Christmas games outside of December. Again, never fast-traveled, but any loading was instant.

What do special about the wingsuit? Just faster? If you can instantly travel to any part of the map, why would you use it? It's just a different mode of traversal, no? I'm sure it'll be fun, as is the swinging, but it's not exactly an new way of playing games or anything.

I feel like no matter how good the visuals and many other elements of these games get, that real sense of being spidey swinging across a vast city with that epic sense of scale and wonder is never going to quite come to fruition.

These games are great, but I see the shots from the movies -- and while I know we're never going to quite reach that level for the aforementioned reasons -- I still find myself longing for that 'epicness' in the games. Right now, by comparison, they feel small and quaint.

Movies shot well can achieve a similar sense of scale and invoke that fear of heights / falling like those gifs show

A game has never done this as far as I can think of. It's probably not possible without photo realism

I didnt know that Marvel approached MS first. That makes it even more confusing. Lol

Btw, when I mentioned the MCU-drama it was about the ownership of the IP.
Indeed completely seperate from the games.

Yeah, Sony has owned the movie rights for quite some time. What you were saying makes perfect sense considering the timing of the MCU stuff and the game, but turns out not to be the case. Bottom line is we really don't know the terms of the deal between Marvel and Sony regarding Spider-man.

You can only fast travel to a specific point in a district. What do you mean why would you use the wing suit? Why would you web sling either? Don't get your point.

Why are you downplaying every single thing revealed in the trailer? Looking at your posts, you seem to be on a mission here.

Here's the rundown:

Activision Spider-Man games were failing because Activision wasn't giving them enough budget - even though they're the largest independent publisher. Marvel realized that only a platform holder (Sony/Microsoft) would give these games that big AAA budget.

They approached Microsoft first. Phil Spencer declined them, citing the lack of first-party studios and that they would rather focus on their own IPs. Funny thing is that, at that time when Phil declined Marvel, Insomniac was working with Xbox on Sunset Overdrive (lol!). They didn't have the vision to partner with Insomniac on that.

Then Marvel approached Sony, and Sony said yes. They hooked Marvel with Insomniac (which was 2nd party at that time), and Marvel asked Insomniac to pick any Marvel hero they wanted to make a game on. Insomniac picked Spider-Man, and the rest is history.

To answer your earlier question: Sony does not own the Spider-Man IP. Marvel cannot include Spider-Man, without Sony's license/permission, in a film that has a runtime of more than 40 minutes.

"Silly" to you maybe, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with predicting that, especially from a team of this caliber. Your problem is you get hung up on this notion of "more of the same", while being oblivious to the fact that many, many GOTY awards are handed out to sequels of previous games that, you guessed it, were very much more of the same.

Uncharted 2, for example, won the awards it did because it was a massive improvement on a working formula. It ticked all of the right boxes. GOTY contenders don't have to re-invent the wheel. Never mind how wrong you are that the 2018 Spider-Man didn't win any GOTY awards.

Major publications like The Wired, Verge, Famitsu, etc. named Spider-Man their GOTY. It got nominated as a GOTY candidate by publications such as Eurogamer, TGA, DICE awards, GDC, Golden Joystick, and New York Game Awards.

Your original argument that Spider-Man did not win any GOTY awards is incorrect.

I'm not saying it's not a good game; I Earned a Platinum for it. I'm saying that it was itself already derivative of 4 Batman games and this new one is seemingly derivative of that, so the chances are very low that it wins any major Game of the Year awards.

Game of the Year awards are not based on my opinion of a particular game, believe it or not; they tend to be based around the critical consensus. And I think the critical consensus will be that it isn't Game of the Year material. Certainly not a winner.

why not just wait till it comes out? so far impressions sound amazing to me, if they are saying it takes hero games to a new level thats insanely high praise.

There's a good chance it'll win a few, its competition is - Zelda, BG3, and Hogwarts, and games at the end of the year tend to fend better than those that come earlier due to the honeymoon period.

Well it's false to assume that every site that gave Spidetman a GOTY are playstation console warriors. Don't really see the issue with a gaming sites giving it that award if they feel like it deserves it.

Those games will win the majority of the awards, but people have to remember, there are hundreds of awards given out every year. Even last year when Elden Ring was breaking records in GOTY accolades and a little not well-known game called "God of War" came in second, a couple other dozen games won GOTY from various outlets.

I can see Spider Man taking most graphics and animation awards, probably acting awards also as it's very character/performance heavy, actual Game of the Year will be between several titles, they'll all win some.

Famitsu didn't give it their Game of the Year; it went to Monster Hunter World and Smash Ultimate. A poll of Japanese developers, conducted by Famitsu, put Spider-Man at the top. Not the same thing.

I will concede that Spider-Man won Game of the Year awards from Wired, ShackNews, and The Verge (although I wouldn't consider any of them to be major gaming publications/sites, e.g., IGN, GameSpot, The Game Awards, etc).

So... with Marvel's Spider-Man having won three Game of the Year awards, out of dozens, do you feel Spider-Man 2, based on what we've seen so far, has a strong chance at winning enough awards to be considered the Game of the Year (a la Red Dead Redemption II/God of War 2018, Elden Ring, etc)?

I will eventually get it, but not this year. I don't like the idea of spending $70 on games.

I will be playing Miles Morales in December. I'll probably play 2 closer to the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025, unless there's a deep discount or it shows up on Plus somehow.

People will still be gushing over it when the awards take place. I don't think anything else is coming during that time that will steal its attention, so yes there is a very high chance.

It won 23 GOTY awards, not 3. You can check gameawards.net.

Also, why are you now talking about Spider-Man 2 *winning* the GOTY award? Wasn't your original argument that it won't be nominated for GOTY?

Going by your original argument, there are plenty of major media publications like EG, GDC, DICE, Golden Joystick, TGA, etc, that nominated Spider-Man for GOTY.

Now, why wouldn't Spider-Man 2, which apparently is a significant improvement according to people who played it, won't be nominated for GOTY?

considering the previews are from a 6-month-old build yet players are still calling it the best superhero game of all time, I have confidence it's going to be part of conversation. The only GOTY I really care about is the VGAs as I think they currently hold the same position as the Oscars for movies.

For me, it's going to be between BG3 and ToTK, but depending on the reception, SM2 could still produce a shock.
