The gamepass experiment has failed. Not only that but they've killed the xbox brand in the process. There's no where else to go. There's no if about it anymore. Microsoft will leave the console space. They should have stuck to the traditional model and focused on content. It they did that from last gen, instead of changing to a subscription model, they may have been in a much better position now.

Xbox in general has this bizarre obsession with what I can only describe as "checkboxes" or bullet points. If something looks great on paper as part of a list they make a huge deal about it, even if the actual value and impact to the consumer is questionable or difficult to actually observe. That's why they never shut up about teraflops, RDNA2, # of studios, etc. Even with individual games, they focus on things like "1000 planets!!!!," "most advanced tire physics!!!!," etc. On one hand I get it that buzzwords are easier for their """brand ambassadors""" to astroturf all over the internet, but to the average person this shit doesn't actually mean anything.
The contrast to Sony is very striking for the PS5. They have hammered repeatedly 3 different things about the PS5 - 3D audio (something anyone can actually experience and hear the difference), haptic rumble (something anyone can actually experience and feel the difference), and the SSD (anyone can see the difference between a 2 and 20 second load screen). These are all things that are tangible - I have absolutely no fucking clue what RDNA2 means to me, the consumer. I can't play 500 game studios. What the hell am I supposed to do with 1500 empty planets? And then when there is something like raytracing, which in theory should be a tangible difference, it takes a dedicated technical team like Digital Foundry to spot the differences most of the time, and even then they usually gets things wrong with their analysis. Nobody is mistaking normal rumble for haptic rumble.

He's not a legendary game designer, he's not a coder, or sound designer, or system architect. He's just a loser pr guy who's just as useless as the leaders before him. It reminds me of the time of PS2, GameCube, and Xbox. GameCube used to have these crazy deals on all the time, I bought one and three games for £99 but I do wonder if you can devalue your product be being so cheap. Like it's so cheap people don't see value in it. If that makes sense?

I don't think they will discontinue either just to continue to keep up appearances but logically it would be the one with lower numbers if they decide to do it.
I actually think this lowering of production due to cost and it taking store shelf space has already happened and people like Eddiegriffin started to call it "supply shortages" instead of seeing it for what it was. The fact that they didn't want the Series X losses anymore and they didn't want the store margins eating into it so they didn't distribute and flood stores with them, ending up with the only real stocked retailer being direct from MS warehouses from their website for a while. It was almost like a soft discontinuation. I believe they will continue to do that until their soon to come console launches just to avoid the negative press of completely discontinuing the thing.
Their next console may just be a cost cut all digital Series X 'pro' launched and marketed as the single new console. So the Series S and Series X regular will last until that "gen" starts (realistically though, not in PR, generations are kind of dead to them now more than ever, live service and services are everything) but it could be the S which dies a lot sooner in terms of actual native software support or iteration. Their cheap entry in future could be a Stadia like controller with cloud (Sebile) and not a new S model. If that takes off in popularity PS will likely be ready with a Portal software update too.

Phil also lurks - he's the most terminally online CEO I've ever come across. He knows exactly what the talking points are on here, Reddit and Resetera and he directly addresses them through the company's PR and marketing. He's liked because he very often says what gamers want to hear - it's why he talks about 'winning' so much, it's why he turns up on enthusiast podcasts and hangs out with influencers. Phil thinks being liked is the same as being respected - it's not.

I think apple could be brilliant in the console space, they already have a store, brand loyalty, loads of cash to get game deals done, and they make good hardware. People keep saying this, yet it was obvious to everyone with eyes that this was going to be a down year.
Of the 3 games you mentioned, only Starfield had any potential to be a system seller, and that flew out the window due to its reception and being on gamepass and PC Day 1.
Even OG Halo couldn't have sold systems under those circumstances.
We're going to see something fascinating in the gaming industry.
Does Microsoft ease back on Day 1 PC and Day 1 GamePass in order to save the Xbox brand? Do they just become a 3rd party publisher and eschew GamePass? Do they double down on this current course and release a new next gen console after the XBS? Do they release a streaming-only device/service?

I think Apple could be great. Probably tge best option that has fans with brand loyalty and a company willing to push certain boundaries.
We need something to keep Sony and MS on their toes and I don't think MS is delivering or they ever will. There's too much stink around the brand and I don't know how they can ever turn that around. I don't think they can tbh.

Maybe Microsoft can benefit from a stronger Sony. Basically to be in a situation where they recognise their mistakes and try to fix them. It seems the issue they have is they don't admit the issues they have. Always spinning everything in a positive light and never talking about their issues is where the problem is.

I still find it hard to believe that Xbox is not capitalising on the raw power. They should be pushing superior fps etc on multi platform games. They got blown away the last three generations on power - this time they got it right with the X and they are still stuffed. I guess the S muddies things up.

Because that raw power hardly matters against the PS5 (a system with its own advantages). Sure, they can do it themselves, but then for what? The Series S wouldn't see those pluses and since they treat it as the main current gen platform, it's extra work for little to no gain.

They're almost certainly still selling units for a loss. You have the ask yourself if it is worth taking a bigger loss on hardware units.
Let's say they're losing 50 dollars on the XSS and 35 dollars on the XSX. You drop those an extra 50 dollars... now you're losing 100 dollars per unit and 85 dollars per unit... now you aren't getting that back on software because your consumer base isn't buying games. Even with them buying 3rd party games, you only get 30% of the royalties. So that's 21 dollars per game. Just to break even on the XSS they need someone to buy 5 3rd party games. That's actually pretty significant (and that's assuming they buy them all at full price).
Then you have the problem that you're selling the system at a discounted price to those who would have bought it at the regular price. So you're taking a net loss there on top of the people you're selling in addition to probably being the least motivated to do things like GamePass or buy a ton of full price games. They might be someone who just wants to play a handful of Microsoft games at discounted prices, like used physical games and such.

You've conflated revenue with profit. Any exclusivity rendered from the ABK deal outside of CoD will almost certainly see the same results as games like Starfield and Forza. These games don't drive system sales and are simply boxed in from outside sales. Operating costs exceed revenues, which means you're taking a loss.
Microsoft one way or another is going to diminish in the console space. That doesn't mean there will be a monopoly though. Nintendo could very well step back in compete garnering a great deal of Xbox fans. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nintendo buy Sega in that scenario to bolster their 1P production.

While we got impressive sales for new releases like Mirage, Spider-Man 2 and SMBW, it seems like Forza Motorsport completely belly-flopped in Europe.
Not too surprising because weekly sales charts were already painting clear picture.
Regarding hardware sales the situation remains the same, though I expected Switch to decline less YoY due to SMBW bundles.

They tried that card for the whole 2020 with an associated FUD campaign against PS5 hardware that lasted months.
When it became apparent that they have no clear cut advantage in real games they were forced to drop the power narrative and they focused on Gamepass and its value against buying games at 70$. That hasn't worked as well.
Their issues are simple:
1) They made Xbox hardware just a low priced option redundant with the PC platform and no clear identity.
2)Their first party output has been super disappointing for years, they had high hopes for Starfield this year but that game didn't turn anywhere as good as they hoped.

It's way too late for Microsoft. The Xbox brand is dead in Europe and Asia and it's dying in the US.
And they can't rebrand.
It's time for someone else to step up to the plate.
Outside of GTA6 exclusivity, nothing is going to move the needle this generation. The cards have been dealt and you have to play with the cards that you have. Right now Microsoft has a 2 and 7 off suit. It's just not a winning hand. Sony could not release another game for the rest of the generation and it wouldn't change that. The biggest system seller the PS5 has right now is the PS5... You can't compete with that. Everyone that anyone knows has a PS5. Kids are asking their parents for PS5s this Christmas, NOT Xboxes. What will kids talk about in January? That their parents got them PS5s. That they're playing Spider-Man. What will kids ask for their birthdays throughout the year? The PS5s that their friends got for Christmas and can't stop talking about. The kids that get Xbox for Christmas because their parents have been Xbox consumers in the past maybe on the OG Xbox and 360, will have upset kids, who will still ask for PS5s.
