What Will GAF's 2011 GOTY Top Ten List Look Like?

Let's predict GAF's 2011 GOTY top ten list. I'm posting this as early as possible because I think it's more fun to try and predict without even taking quality into account, and my gut tells me that the list is really easy to guess. The factors I used to determine my list are budget, media attention, thread size and console exclusivity. The list will be off by one or two because there will probably be a a couple E3 announcements or delays, but I think my guesses are pretty solid. Post your list and we'll see at the end of the year who's closest!

1. Uncharted 3
2. Portal 2
3. Zelda Skyward Sword
4. Batman Arkham City
5. Mass Effect 3
6. Gears of War 3
7. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
8. LA Noire
9. Killzone 3
10. Infamous 2

Note: I don't think Last Guardian will make 2011, and I think 10 could easily be Dead Space 2 or Marvel vs. Capcom 3 instead.

Here's the GOTY 2010 thread, which also links to past year threads for reference.

Whatever wins, Gaf will hate the next year.
.

edit: and your list is missing Dark Souls

Oh dang, is that confirmed for 2011? Yeah that changes things then.
Yep, 2011 :)

Right now, I see Skyward Sword, Mass Effect 3, Arkham City and Uncharted as the main contenders. I think Skyward Sword will wind up winning.

It's almost as if GAF is made up of individual people with individual tastes!

That's crazy talk.

1- The Witcher 2
2- The Witcher 2
3- The Witcher 2
4- The Witcher 2
5- The Witcher 2
6- The Witcher 2
7- The Witcher 2
8- The Witcher 2
9- The Witcher 2
10- The Witcher 2

i think that's a pretty decent prediction in the op. not sure about killzone and infamous making it. perhaps twisted metal and call of duty 8 instead.

i think portal 2 has a chance of topping the list this year. it's on pc, 360, and ps3, and ps3 owners get a pretty sweet deal.

How are we suppose to know this? It's only April.

That's exactly the point. Like I said, I think the list is really easy to predict ahead of time.

Add 6 more games to this list if you want prediction bragging rights!

Arkham will be lower. Zelda will be lower. Infamous won't show up. Killzone won't show up but Resistance 3 might make it instead.

I think my top three in no particular order will be:

1.Mass Effect 3
2.Uncharted 3
3.Gears of war 3

This is one jammed packed year at least when it comes to blockbuster sequels, I'm honestly not sure what will when game of the year in 2011.

I have a good feeling about Final Fantasy Type-0. I imagine Tactics Ogre may be on a few people's list if they still remember it.

1. Skyrim
2. Arkham City
3. Skyward Sword
4. Deus Ex 3
5. Uncharted 3
6. Mass Effect 3
7. Portal 2
8. LA Noire
9. Battlefield 3
10. Gears

Portal 2 and Uncharted 3 come in with too high of expectations from GAF and have a backlash from that.

you might be right, it's a tough choice but I figured the past is the best predictor of the future here.

0% chance any handheld game will be in the top ten.

1. Uncharted 3.

The rest can take their place beneath the King, where they belong.

Having said that, I need to play another game already. I haven't touched a game since FF13. Talk about one game destroying a person's soul for video games. It's already been a year and I'm still finding it difficult to recover from the trauma of having wasted my life on that. I think I shall finally take the shrink wrap off Mass Effect and turn on my 360.

Yep. My body is ready.

What we will see

1 360 exclusive
1 Wii exclusive
2-3 PS3 exclusives
1 PC(Valve or Blizzard)
Rest will be multiplatforms between 360/PS3 or 360/PS3/PC.
Not a single handheld in the top 15, most likely top 20.

The games, I feel Portal 2 will take the top, but not to sure about the order for the rest.
1. Portal 2
2. Uncharted 3
3. Batman AC
4. Dark Souls
5. Elder Scrolls V
6. Battlefield 3
7. Zelda SS
8. Infamous 2
9. Gears 3
10. LA Noire(Drop this if Trico comes out, most likely will not)

Side notes

The only one I'm having trouble with is MVC3. I think if the online wasn't such a disappointment. It would have been a shoe in for top 5.

Mass Effect 3 will not drop this year. It will be pushed back to late Jan/Feb

1. Diablo 3
2. Diablo 3
3. Battlefield 3
4. Uncharted 3
5. Diablo 3
6. Diablo 3
7. Batman: Arkham City
8. Diablo 3
9. Diablo 3
10. Diablo 3
11. Diablo 3
12. Diablo 3
13. Pokemon B/W
14. Castlevania: Lords of Shadows.

i don't think so. sure, both mgs3 and mgs4 were goty, but that was pretty much it. super mario galaxy was #1 in 2007 and its superior sequel was #3 in 2010. uncharted was #7 or something in 2007 while u2 was #1 in 2009. and there's others. resident 4 and resident evil 5 (it was a predicted winner the year it came out). mass effect and mass effect 2.

how about a pc exclusive

What are the big ones I'm missing? Last year Starcraft was the only one.

Edit: Anihawk, I was only referring to U2 winning two years ago there. You make a good point about the sweet deal PS3 owners are getting maybe pushing Portal 2 to the top though this time. I think it'll be close either way.

For me personally so far Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm are really amazing games that are different from the usual CoD inspired FPS we have been getting so I have a feeling 1 if not both will be on my list. I'd say we are going to see more Crysis 2 then Bulletstorm as the game unfortunately rubbed people the wrong way. I myself think Bulletstorm will be on my list, it's just really a full package.

Dragon Age 2 might also appear. It's still a good game that has a lot of problems. I felt the same way about FFXIII and I still love that game. I like DA2 a bit less, but it still does some enjoyable things. It might appear.

The Third Birthday so far is awesome, but not that awesome so it probably won't get a lot of votes.

Dead Space 2, I thought was pretty mediocre so I won't be voting for it, but a lot of people liked it so I bet it will appear. I mean people were calling it a Uncharted 2 level jump in quality. I don't think so.

Homefront is terrible, so I hope it wont appear. It's mp is getting some praise. though.

Killzone 3 while good, wasn't very standout to me. It was just an enjoyable game and nothing more. I'm not sure what the general consensus is.

As for games not out yet. LA Noire looks amazing and if it is as amazing as it sounds, it's going to be a contender.

Deus Ex looks very good as well and it may have a great single player experience.

Shadows of the Damn may make my list if it's just as fun and full of personality like NMH2 was last year.

Uncharted 3 is going to most likly win if it's as good as 2.

If FFXIII-2 comes out and is good it will probably make my list as well.

So for me, my prediction is(with order meaning nothing)

1. L.A Noire
2. Deus Ex Human Revolution
3. Uncharted 3
4. Final Fantasy XIII-2
5. Bulletstorm
6. Crysis 2
7. Skyrim
8. Shadows of the Damn
9. Mass Effect 3
10. Dragon Age 2

What GAF's will be:

1.Uncharted 3
2.Mass Effect 3
3.Skyrim
4.The Witcher 2
5. Dragon Age 2
6. Crysis 2
7. Gears of War 3
8. Battlefield 3
9. Dark Souls
10. Deus Ex

Look at the years prior. We have not had a handheld break the top 15 since 2006.

Well, my smh was in regards to Peace Walker falling below the likes of New Vegas. It's a better game than MGS4 and doesn't even crack the top 20, but I guess popularity contest...

Maybe we'll get a handheld game in the Top 10 in 2012, but in general GAF's love affairs with handhelds die out pretty quickly. The DS games in the Top 10 also benefited from a few things: the PS2 was old hat, the 360 was just hitting its stride, and the Wii and PS3 had only just launched and didn't have a lot of meat to them. So more people paid attention to the handhelds because they were new and exciting.

The 3DS should theoretically be hitting its stride in 2012, and the current consoles will really be showing their age at the end of the year. So maybe we'll see a 3DS game crack the lineup (or I guess PSP2, though its harder to forecast that without much launch/lineup info for it).

Hey, New Vegas is amazing. And I say that as someone who loved PW.

Nah, I think GAF was pretty right with that one.

new vegas more like killed my 360 vegas

friend let me play his copy. i think it was the plan all along so he could play my burnout paradise every day.

While dictating what order they will be in is a fool's game the list will undoubtedly include Skyrim, Portal 2, Uncharted 3, Arkham City and Mass Effect 3, in that order.

Crysis 2 has been better received than Killzone 3 so your list is already wrong

Haha overall reception isn't the only factor, check out the lists from past years.

Also, like I already said, the last two slots I think will be bumped for Dark Souls, which I forgot to add, and something announced at E3.

I think Deus Ex is a big wild card depending on how good it is.
me3 and/or skyrim would have to massively disappoint. me3 probably has a higher chance of it considering it's the finale.
