What Will GAF's 2011 GOTY Top Ten List Look Like?

Hey, New Vegas is amazing. And I say that as someone who loved PW.

I played like two hours of NV before quitting. It didn't exactly hook me...

Nah, I think GAF was pretty right with that one.

Tag quote if you're talking about the MGS4 comment.

1. Battlefield 3
2. Zelda: Skyward Sword
3. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
4. Batman: Arkham City
5. Portal 2

6. Dark Souls
7. Gears of War 3
8. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
9. LA Noire
10. Dead Space 2

I expect Battlefield 3 to land on top because it will be such a technical showpiece that the PC fan-base will celebrate it, even though it's coming out on consoles, because it is clearly a PC-focused game. Adding to this that PS360 owners will also celebrate the title because of how damn good it is. I expect Nintendo nuts to catapult Zelda way higher than it deserves because it will likely be the only standout Wii game, as Nintendo begins to think about winding down this generation and launching a new console in 2012.

Three through six I expect to not have the top spot because I don't see any of them realistically recapturing the magic of their previous installments. In the same way Mario Galaxy 2 is considered obviously better than the first (by most accounts, not mine) yet could not recapture the top spot last year as it did in 2007, I see every game in three through six "suffering" from this. It's really like the "first world problem" syndrome: your last game was so fucking incredible, there was nothing else like it around; there's no way you can have that same impact in a sequel supposedly improving upon it.

I think, and hope, people will be suffering from some Gears fatigue finally this year, and not give the worst franchise in games anymore undue credit than a 7 ranking. For Pete's sake, people: play Vanquish. Play Uncharted. Play Red Faction. Play almost anything else, please, I beg you!

Eight and nine are not my cup of tea, but I'm guessing will make the list. I'm sort of betting that people won't overrate LA Noire like they did with Red Dead and GTA IV, but even as I type this I know this is a bad bet.

The last spot almost went to Rage, but considering no one has even mentioned it in the thread to this point, unless it's absolutely mind-blowingly good, I don't see it creeping into the top 10 with all these huge franchises this year. Too bad for it, and Infamous 2, and so many other games this year. I think Mass Effect 3 will be delayed, and I think Assassin's Creed 3 will see some franchise fatigue on GAF.

I dunno, what even comes out in 2011? I can't think of much, it's kind of a lame year if you ask me.

.

I think there is a pretty good chance we could get Xenoblade this year. Also 3D Zelda is amazing, lol at Nintendo nuts.

I think Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever made. I think Majora's Mask is a worthy sequel to it, and gets way too much hate. I think Wind Waker is a flawed gem that could've been the best Zelda ever, and would love to see a true sequel correcting the few problems.

But Twilight Princess was a bit disappointing, and I ask you, what can another 3d Zelda do that will make it amazing? What hasn't been done?

If Dark Souls manages to live up to expectations and improve on an already great game it can definitely make the top 3 list, imo. Everything is looking awesome so far and the expanded emphasis on exploration sounds great. Probably the one thing that can hamper its chances of not being voted into the top 10 games is its accessibility. If it's anything like Demon's Souls then it definitely won't be a game for everyone although the game found a pretty welcoming audience (well for the most part) on GAF. There are a lot of people who didn't like the presentation and gameplay aspects of Demon's Souls but who knows, maybe this game can change that. Time will tell. I, for one, am definitely looking forward to it as it's my most anticipated game at the moment. Dark Souls also has its work cut out due to the fact that this year holds sequels to past GOTY winners (Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3).

There's also Battlefield 3 which I believe has a good chance to at least win the Best Shooter spot and definitely has a chance to appear on the top 10. We still haven't seen the Multiplayer side of things yet but there's little doubt that it won't disappoint regarding Multiplayer as it's always been an important feature.

The one game I have high hopes for is Deus Ex Human Revolution. This game has got a lot riding on its shoulders it being a prequel to the original Deus Ex and the fact that there's already been a bit of commotion regarding some of its design choices. Personally, it doesn't bother me THAT much but even still I'm really hoping it surprises people and does really well.

Other contenders include

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Arkham City
Gears Of War 3
Portal 2
Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

I know I will disagree with 8 of out the 10 titles and that there will be no strategy genre games outside a JRPG or two(Pokemon?).

Motion Controls? Integration of Dungeon and Overworld? There is a lot of stuff left to be done with Zelda.

Uhm, I wasn't aware Majora's Mask ever got hate. In fact, a lot of Zelda fans consider it the best.

Well it didn't do so good sales wise, but there could have been other factors at play. A few people complained initially but eventually most of the dedicated fanbase came to accept it as a classic and worthy sequel to Ocarina.

They've added motion controls to other games and they haven't really improved because of it. I don't think melee combat would really be better with motion controls than with buttons, do you?

I'm not sure what you mean by "integration of dungeon and overworld." Do you mean something like a good chunk of the first dungeon from Wind Waker, where Link was outside climbing the mountain, able to see the ocean and rest of the world but was still technically in a "dungeon?" I do think that's neat, but I don't think it's something that would make it game-of-the-year-worthy...

And I must just listen to too many podcasts, but yeah; there are a lot of people who talk about Majora's Mask like it was total crap. I remember hearing not too long ago someone's specific complaint that the primary design trait just made the entire game a backtrack bore-fest. The same way people complain about having to return to single levels in one game, they compared the time-rewinding feature of the main overworld to this shitty game design choice.

Of course, I would argue what makes Majora's Mask different is the way you can interact with the world and characters to change events as you gain abilities/items...

A speculation thread about future list wars on a video game message board on the internet.

Evilore might as well shut down NeoGAF for good.
