I was reading an Xbox-centric forum this morning, checking in and seeing how people were taking the news. I'd say it broke into thirds, roughly. A third of them were putting no stock in the rumors. They were waiting for Phil to tell them what the "reality" is. Until then, it was all just rumor. Another third were very disenchanted with what they had heard. They were ready to jump ship. The other third said that, even if the rumors are true, they would still enjoy their Xboxes, their GamePass, and their Xbox game library, including the BC catalog.

I didn't have any concerns about the last two thirds -- the disenchanted and the people who will still enjoy their Xboxes. Those two positions seem entirely reasonable to me. It was the first group that concerned me -- the ones who were waiting for Daddy Phil to spell things out for them. We know that Phil & company are going to do a PR dance about this, in order to avoid alienating the core Xbox user base. He's going to use more than a handful of sugar to help the medicine go down. And these guys are going to just lap it up. It's like they can't put 2 and 2 together without Phil telling them what the answer is.

They all do. I wasn't trying to say the others don't. My point is Xbox just seems very unstable right now and if their next strategy doesn't work get ready for a new one.

Yup... spot on. Option 1 is better but it further devalues their brand. I think they do both. Start with option 2 but transition to option 1.

What we will likely see for starters is some of the already released stuff coming to the PS5. Some of the stuff they are currently working on would likely come to PS5 6 or so months after they are released on gamepass. But this is just a by-product of this decision having been made when those projects are already deep in development. So technically, the PS5 port would be months behind. And then the future stuff will come day and date on all applicable platforms. This would probably be like 2 years from now or so and by then, the outcry on all this would have died down.

Of course, they could have some games do Option 1 and others Option 2.

Call of Duty is their money maker and I see that staying Option 1. That should be their game that is all about bringing in the cash.

But that 40 tflops console will be held back by the 4 tflops handheld. They are already struggling to get games running on a series s and thats only 1/3rd the power of the series X. a 1/10th in power handheld will need to have games designed around its tflops limitation then scaled up. no way you can scale a game down 10x.

That's the thing will they require devs to support it? Or will they simply let it be like the Steam deck and then let you stream from your Xbox\cloud for everything else? They would be insane to require devs to support it. They would kill their 3rd party support.

I agree that game pass still gives an Xbox console value (if you already own one). At the very least, a Series X will be a great game pass player. But thinking ahead, with the possibility of them likely going third party, it makes no sense to buy third party games on that ecosystem.

Eh, Microsoft's library of games differentiate themselves really well against Sony's exclusives though.

Sony tends to focus on third person, story driven, high-fidelity titles. Whereas Microsoft has really leaned into open world games, Western RPGs, first-person experiences, and multiplayer games.


I could definitely see games like Forza Horizon, Avowed, Halo, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and yes, even Starfield, etc... doing quite well on Sony platforms because they actually fill genres that Playstation-only gamers don't have wide access to.

Thinking about this more, I don't think I'd have a problem with Xbox just becoming an OS, as long all my stuff can carry over to it; game library, achievements, friends list, etc.

I do really like Xbox's hardware though. The Xbox One was a huge miss but the 360, One X and Series X are all great machines

Yeah, I think they would. Windows can pretty much withstand anything, as did Millennium edition and Vista, except for maybe DirectX losing relevance. That's the hook they've used since 95 to tie the home market success in PC gaming to the platform via the duopoly in the GPU market that arose.

Launching a new Windows 12 and making it a free desktop option for the Series S and X would possibly be an effective pivot to sunset the current hardware with game support via PC stores like Steam, and serve as a way to sell all the old hardware inventory.

Xcloud immediately runs like ass when there's a semi-popular game on it. No way it'll be streaming only.

Microsoft's worst nightmare is that XCloud suddenly becomes a success because of a GAAS game that's going to light up the skies and then burn out. Unlike regular Azure servers Xcloud gaming servers can't be turned of and repurposed at a whim, it's all Xbox Series X custom hw in custom built servers that can serve max 4 player at a time running a game in 1080p with Xbox Series S quality, those servers are useless for any other purpose. It takes time (and enormous amounts of money) to build, install and operate Xcloud servers in data centers all over the world without knowing if Xcloud will attract enough longtime subscribers to pay for all of that. It's an enormous financial gamble to completely switch to Xcloud for next gen.

I think some of the people on here need to realize a few things. Regardless of what happens next week.

A) Competing with Steam is more of an uphill battle than competing with PlayStation in the console space.

B) Competing with Nintendo in the world of Handhelds is more of an uphill battle than competing with PlayStation in the console space.

C) They havent been really competing with PlayStation in the console space in over a decade.

D) Nintendo and Playstation have a high likely hood of not wanting GamePass (in its current form) on their consoles ever and big 3rd party developers would probably not be thrilled about it either.

E) All of the above is most likely why things are changing... because something big is about to happen.

I bought a Series X for £450 in June 2022. I felt GP wasn't sustainable long term but I thought that MS were going to have a better generation than the Xbox One gen and that, because of their deep pockets, that they would be committed to Xbox for at least this whole Series era.

I bought the Series X because of the value proposition - I felt with me and my partners financial situation I wouldn't be able to afford many £60-70 games (granted I usually wait for prices to drop, but still). Plus I'm an (old) Xbox fan (of course Xbone was terrible and I didn't have one), I like the Xbox pad shape, it's powerful etc. I'm a gamer, not a fanboy. Do I need to worry about my purchase now?

If if had the money, I would either bought BOTH or just gone PS5 but given the insane value of GP (especially with the Gold to GP scam, that I did for 3 years worth) I just felt it was the only way I could get my partner to agree go buying a next gen console. ( ... ) What a mess.

See above for the reason why Game Pass wasn't sustainable: there were far, far too many people who used tricks to circumvent official prices and got to enjoy 3 years of Game Pass for the price of a regular Xbox Live subscription. It was such a good deal and so easy to do that everyone doing it knew instinctively that MS was surely losing money on Game Pass that way. But now most of those tricks are dead and it's becoming much harder to convince these people to pay full price for this service, especially if they're only occasionally playing GP games because their main interest is FIFA, GTA, Fortnite, etc. That's why Game Pass subscription numbers are plateauing and could even go down.
