Sony president wants to improve margins on their multi-platform releases (Updated w/ analysis)

but how do you grow console if you release day 1 1st party games on other platforms like PC?
I read that statement differently but who knows with translation.

I read it as him saying that was the case in the past, growing consoles but now they want to grow their 1st party games for more money

"In the past, we wanted to popularize console and the 1st party titles' main purpose was to make the console popular. It is true, but there is a synergy to it. So if you have strong first party content, not only with our console but also other platforms like computers, 1st party can be grown with multiplatform and that can help operating profit to improve. So that is another one we want to proactively work on.I personally think there are opportunities out there for improvement of margins, so I would like to go aggressive in improving our margin performance."

I like this idea of having the option to play First party games on PC. I would not imagine that these titles would hit Xbox or Nintendo systems, but being able to play Sony games on a Steam Deck is awesome!

Phones, Netflix, PC.

I'm never buying a PS again so this is good news for me. Worst gen in PS history. I'll play the occasional Sony game I'm actually interested in on cloud on a TV even rather than buy another system after the PS5.

*reduce the budget of AAA games
*Dont do DAY 1 release keep it like rockstar games
* if possible bring psn plus to PC platform with old games. If gamepass works on PC why not PSN plus.
* Bloodborne remake on PC

It looks like he wants to be more aggressive with PC releases. If they start launching day and date they will degrade their console market. I mean, Xbox is literally showing what that leads to.

So xbox traded their exclusives for playstation exclusives. I think either way that exclusive make the gaming industry alot more interesting no matter the platform.

Iam here for

Pc exclusives
Playstation exclusives
Xbox exclusives
Nintendo exclusives
And mobile exclusives.

Imo consoles lost their point in existence with loosing more and more benefits. Exclusives are basically the last hold out.

You make more money on software day 1 at the expense of some console sales. Number of consoles sold isn't the most important number any more.
but this is Sony we are talking about, not Microsoft. The playstation business is huge for Sony.

They're going to have to find a balance. They just can't go full Xbox. Never go full Xbox.
I'm not sure about day and date, but their games will come to PC a lot faster.

tbf. consoles has less cheaters, DRM and mutliple launchers and its cheaper.
Some games have always online requirement or DRM just for the PC platform.

Microsoft does X and Sony does the same in the following day, like magic. /s

Truth is that they know that they customer base will not deplete with the ports, otherwise the PS5 would been dead on arrival. Their margins are pretty poor at 6%, need to improve that.

What brings more money ?
Sony is not Microsoft, huge chunk of gaming profit is still coming from the playstation ecosystem.
Unless you are telling me Sony gets additional profit from the PC market while the playstation side is unaffected but i doubt it.

You probably don't, but console hasn't been growing since PS2 days, and that's not PC's fault.

So the question is, how do you not lower the console sales, i think a very big part of the console buyers simply aren't interested on the PC ecosystem, they just want a very simple plug and play system, so i don't think PS sales will be hurt by this movement but it's impossible to know 100%

xbox leading the way as always
1) Xbox starts charging for online: Everyone else does soon after.

2) Xbox begins launching 1st party games on Windows PCs: Sony started doing it too

3) Xbox pushes crossplay: the others follow.

It seems Xbox always drags the others kicking and screaming into doing what they do.

i think the console hasn't been growing much because there are more choices aka platforms to game on, compared to the ps2 days.
With steam, portable hardware like switch, its hard to grow alot , competition is fierce.

I think we will see shorter windows for PC releases, maybe 1 year or 6 months depending on the performance of the title on PS5/6. I still don't see day and date for anything other than GaaS and potentially A and AA titles.

Definitely not going to be porting stuff to Xbox though, no reason to set up shop on a sinking ship.

No. They were against it at first.

take an example of good game like elden ring. If the game is good people are going to buy it no matter what. You think of a 30% cut but there is another 70% to be made elsewhere.

lol Sony is doomed how do expect to keep selling PlayStations? Jk! as successful the brand is it goes to show that their consumers really don't buy their exclusives. Since they're not willing to take the gamepass model. This is going to be interesting to see how this all plays out I'm more interested in what Phil has to say now tomorrow since they're always the more forward thinking company of the three sometimes to their own detriment.

They will learn the same thing as MS, but even harsher lesson.

The difference being MS can keep xbox alive with the billions they make from enteprise, xbox can disappear tomorrow and MS would be fine.

Sony aren't in the same position, if they make moves that devalue their console business, not only is playstation fucked but sony as a whole.
