Phil Spencer: "You are going to see more of our games on more platforms"

Another example, I love halo but the userbase is dwindling, love for MCC and infinite to get that boost again on PC with PS5 players.

It's such an important point.

Player base matters. Infinite and Gears on PS would see a minimum of a 3x increase to long term player count in these games.

Salty motherfukers all around
I'm ok with people paying 70 for bo6 and it's on gamepass day 1
More people can join in the game more people to play with
Xbox is a gamepass machine now
There is 0 reason to buy Xbox without gamepass
And no matter how salty and butt hurt u are u can't deny the insane value of gamepass.
If it's such a good deal and you're so relaxed and assured in your position, why are you screeching like this?

Didn't spencer said himself after acquiring Bethesda that games/IPs that have huge community outside Xbox will remain most likely multi platform? Doom was always multi platform, same with Diablo (where it makes even less sense to make DLC exclusive). Also we are seeing recently that MS is loosening their single console approach.

Leverage DOOM? I just don't think that's really fair for DOOM.

I think that game was always going to be multiplat.

Saying that. More games will come day and date. Time for everyone to accept that.
Untrue. Doom at one point was 100% never multiplat.

Phil Spencer apparently made a "big decision" to make all ZeniMax games Xbox exclusive in a November 2021 meeting. This reveal came to light as part of the final day of testimony in this week's Microsoft FTC hearing.
"All games going forward?" Stuart asked. "Not just new IP, but ALL games going forward? Wow."

https://www.ign.com/articles/xbox-ftc-trial-phil-spencer-zenimax-exclusive
I would bet every Bethesda game after Indiana Jones will be Multi-platform day 1. Zenimax also have the in-house resources to port PS5 games unlike many other Microsoft owned studios
With this aproach next gen xbox gonna sell less than wiiu, pc players gonna play on pc, playstation players will play on playstation, and the remaining(currently under 30m series S+X) xbox players gonna realise there is literally only negatives of chosing xbox, aka u gonna be cockblocked from playing pc/playstation games if u owe it, so it will be worst choice of a platform .
Gamepass is the short term plan. With the Xbox Series systems surely recieving Multi-platform games until 2031(at a minimum), Microsoft doesn't have too worry much about losing tons of subscriptions overnight. The next Xbox won't have exclusive games, only better hardware to run games better. It will be niche for sure, unless something dramatically changes

During the next few years, Microsoft will probably buy up more studios, see if that grows gamepass, and if it doesn't they'll abandon it. I'm quite confident, they will continue to buy up studios/publishers no matter what because they see AI as a massive industry shifting development. Buy studios up while they are cheap

sony fanboys port begging is funny considering they said xbox has no games.

I imagine that MS is trying to sell a lot of Xboxes at the end of this year, if it doesn't work out, the future is to abandon the market as a manufacturer.
it's over xbox is now just an ephemeral product
The lack of truly new hardware, to me, suggest that they are already abandoning hardware. They are just clearing existing inventory this way.

No he said that the purchase of Zenimax was to provide Exclusives to Xbox platform and to platforms that Gamepass exists on. They cancelled development of Starfield and Redfall on Playstation. This revisionism of history that these games were always going to be multiplatform is laughable.

Yeah....clearly the pitch for Xbox consoles now isn't exclusives, it is Game Pass. That's what he laid out as the definitive value proposition for Xbox consoles. Buy the game on any platform, but Game Pass is only available on Xbox.
The issue is that Xbox hardware and Gamepass is not making money, and releasing games on PlayStation doesn't change that.

But as i pointed out a few weeks ago, Xbox customers are used to the idea of Microsoft allowing Xbox to lose money. Not realizing that "paying consumers" are the ones with power. And once PlayStation gamers become a bigger source of income for MS gaming, it would just make Xbox gamers look worse by comparison.

Microsoft would cater to those who pay them. Being faithful is irrelevant if you don't pay your dues.

Nah,just too early, also, it's one of the worst kept secrets that Sony is due to release the PS5 Pro this year so why show your hand before that's announced?

Do you have data of the latter or just assumptions? No company is going to burn money just because.
Yes, console sales are stagnant, GamePass new subscribers are stagnant especially on PC but also on consoles where they are plateauing, MS is prorating games to multiple platforms, software sales are not booming.

Sunk cost fallacy is not something I made up, probably they still cling to the original plan where they are disrupting the market changing consumer tastes (perceived game value) and becoming the source of gaming (subs) on long enough timescales thus they keep investing and putting more good money after bad. Let's see how the market adjust and if they will be allowed to gobble up publishers after publisher.

I liked how he really emphasised that call of duty black ops 6 is coming to all platforms at exactly the same time whereas playstation unfortunately are really against that philosophy.

Its nice to see, everyone wins!
It's adorable that people still think Phil Spencer is doing this out of the goodness of his heart and not for monies.

It's bad for those attached to the Xbox platform, but could be good for Microsoft.
The Xbox hardware burns money. And currently Microsoft is taking away all the ways the hardware is suppose to make money and thus justify itself.

If i was an Xbox Gamer who is genuinely devoted to Xbox, i would demand Gamepass price raised. Because the entirely "best deal in gaming" is outright killing the hardware's ability to make back the money.

The Xbox console need to justify why it would have a next generation. This news of all these MS PS5 games is bad for the future of the Xbox hardware. Good for gamers though.

I have said this before, and I will say it again. I believe at some point, gamepass will be on PS platforms. Just the same way we have EA Play. It could be a $70/year or $10/month service and only have MS-published games on it. The games will also be on sale on the PS store too. Just where I see MS going.

Microsoft would love that.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

i've been saying this for a while, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Even ol Jezzy poopoo and Tom Warren, the persistently wrong boys.

The non answer about Tango and zero follow up on it and the cheers from a section in the audience tells me all I needed to know about who attended it and what the purpose was… beautiful how the interviewer went straight into the Activision-Blizzard purchase very rapidly as to say "well we know why this is happening… or one of the big catalysts so let's go into that and try to spin it without connecting the dots for people formally".
Bingo, the reason they spend so much time and energy on this prepared show is because they can't produce or create anything else worthwhile. The executives at xbox (not the engineers!) are all below average incompetent losers. They live in a fantasy world, we buy a few things, invest in new studios and existing studios, invest in two systems (our winning plan) to end up on top.
Loooool The executives are real amateurish fanboys. They have absolutely no understanding of strategy or tactics.

he said exactly

"Obviously I can't sit here and say every Bethesda game is [an Xbox] exclusive, because we know that's not true," he explained. "There's contractual obligations that we're going to see through. We have games that exist on other platforms and we're going to go and support those games on the platforms they're on. There's communities of players - we love those communities and will continue to invest in them - and even in the future there might be...either contractual things or legacy on different platforms that we'll go do."

Let's not forget the $400+ upfront investment cost to subscribe to Netflix if we are going to keep using their weird analogy.
That's like adding the cost of the TV. No dude, you already have the device that can run/stream Game Pass games.

This is least they can do after buying half of the industry I suppose.

Chasing hardware sales is fool's errand anyways. Especially when you have to start from scratch every 5-7 years.

Let consoles sell by itself without help of marketing, exclusives and other expensive push. That will show you how much actual demand is there and how these companies should be focusing on that.

I notice a little further in the interview, Spencer still wont answer properly why they closed Tango Works. It was literally politician style evasive nonsense. And even funnier, Ryan did a big uneasy build up of the question. Saying Phil has been quiet for so long, its the one closure that really hit the community etc etc and then Phil says lots of nothing.

Lol just stop the revisionism. They were going to make ES6 exclusive. It's no longer going to be exclusive. They pivoted

If they were doing considerably better in the market perhaps this would not be the route they go down right now.

I highly doubt you would be getting people having sly digs about "loving plastic boxes" or "toxic console wars" either. Who the fuck are you trying to kid with that stuff, that community is infested with slime balls

Also Phil when not being interviewed:
CANCEL ALL PS5 VERSIONS!

Xbox is in an ironic position. They finally have to line-up of games they've been rebuilding since the Xbox One fiasco, but the hardware is falling of the cliff and Gamepass is being crushed under the weight of the game cost development from the 1st party. It seems it is inevitable that they will switch to some kind of a 3rd party strategy.

This was never in doubt.

Once the Axis of Evil saw how much money MS spent on ABK, they stepped in to make sure they got that $70 billion back as quickly as possible.

VGJEWls.jpeg
This is true regardless of what they spent on ABK and is why it was so stupid to think they would make CoD exclusive. They can't leave money on the table for the big games without shareholders being let down.

He's talking about existing games like Fallout 76, Elder Scrolls Online

"And even in the future there might be..either contractual things."

Games like Deathloop where Sony had exclusive rights.

"legacy on different platforms that we'll go do."

Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush doesn't have a legacy on PlayStation.

Phil stopped several Bethesda games from releasing on PlayStation.

So Gears, Halo and Forza will save Xbox?

Some things never change.

true detective time GIF

Been hearing that story for a long time now, but the "Big Three" hasn't been able to move the needle for sometime.

One might even posit it isn't the Big Three anymore, as Halo hasn't been on a stellar point for quite some time. How quickly time flies from the Craig memes.

Any list of which games?

There's a list of everything at the Showcase; I'd say 85% of them are confirmed multiplatform?

I'm convinced this is a similar situation to Sega, wherein folks will just cling to the pieces of wood from the ship until something like Halo, Gears or Forza shows up.

I doubt Avowed or Indiana will sway their opinion either, nor does Phil's statement.

Maybe Starfield? It's only when something synonymous with Xbox of signifant magnitude shows up will they begrudgingly accept his words.

Will any Sony exclusives eventually come to Xbox?

Although I don't necessarily disagree I do feel that the continued push behind Gamepass must be yielding results and is not this black hole eating money.

7yrs in and Gamepass is improving which tells me the funding is more than ever. I don't see a company like Microsoft keeping a sinking ship afloat for 7yrs that doesn't make sense.

The multiplatform approach currently still looks like select titles rather than across the board. While theres an Xbox (the console) full third-party doesn't make sense but we'll see.
I got to admit.. true love like this is really beautiful to see.

Because you don't want it to eat further into your marketshare?

Except nowadays, you don't.

Digital games ensure higher switching costs for your gamers to other platforms and thus keep them in.

How did i know that there will STILL be people in denial about Microsoft transitioning to full 3rd party? Some people still can't accept that Microsoft want everything day 1 on as many platforms as possible. It's a new era for Microsoft gaming.
