Steam break previous record of 37 million with 38.3 million PC gamers online

It's pretty funny, for those of us being with Steam and PC gaming since the beginning these are the same regurgitated arguments ("laptops!", "low hardware!", "bad games!", "bad casuals!"...) we saw years ago when the numbers were a fraction of what they are now.

With PS and Xbox games coming to PC next gen I'm just buying Steamdecks for the whole family and GeForce Now for super demanding games, that's it.

I only played the demo of an unreleased steam game featuring <===== over the weekend not actually on steam itself so they have 1 more person they could add to that number.

PC has the most games and best performance. It's a no brainer if you can afford it

It's not just that, for me it's the flexibility it offers that makes it worthwhile. You can use any controller/peripheral you want. You can play at a desk, on a TV, and now on a handheld. There's Mods for games and you can select your own settings (dependant on whether you want to focus on framerate or graphics).

The demographic of gamers is largely grown up adults now, in general people value having choice and flexibility.

we can certainly expect the numbers to continue growing as more console players continue to graduate to PC, alongside new players joining the hobby.

I mean, I'm one of them. Recently built my PC and I've been a PlayStation guy since I was a kid with my PS1. Still have my PS5 but I think it'll get less and less use with time.

Now that nothing is really and truly exclusive, PC just started making more sense.

I was told no one will leave that treadmill.

Doesn't simply logging in or just being in a community forum count as being online? I mean it's a nice milestone but I don't think it means 38 million people were actually playing games on Steam concurrently.
You can access steam with any PC/laptop as long it mets the requirements.
So as long I can log in to steam and play a game, i'm one of the numbers right?
Hot take here but i think is quite easy to achieve, considering most household have at least 1 Pc or a laptop.

You guys aren't even accounting for all the prankster uncles

I'm one of those new ones. I have been mainly a console player since the mid-2000's. Built most of my digital catalog on Xbox over the last 9 years because they had backwards compatibility, but now that they seem to be going the way of the dodo I've re-built my PC and have started moving my library there. Can't believe I didn't do it sooner. Hardware costs more upfront, but by God the games are so much cheaper on Steam or GOG that it absolutely makes up for it. Also things work much better than they did last time I had a decent PC. PC is way more plug and play than it used to be.

Most remarkable thing about Steam's rise to power is that they seemingly spend 0 dollars marketing it. I think they benefited greatly from the rise of Twitch streamers who generally play on PC and Steam.

Yeah, people will leave if the conditions are right. I have to say, it took me a while because I'm big on trophies (steam achievements are kind of trash compared to it), the thought of having to start my library from zero is also not very appealing, plus PC can have some small annoyances.

That being said, with Square Enix clearly signaling that they're stopping their launch exclusivity, Sony's first party games no longer being exclusive forever (and not as appealing as they once were), and my desire for better resolution/performance all worked together to a tipping point and I caved.

With consoles getting this expensive you definitely won't be the last one.

I'd like to know how many of them are just users that have the toggle 'Run Steam when my computer starts' enabled.

But Steam didn't grow 1 million; the peak CCU did. Actual install base (weird saying that for a free storefront but w/e) could be the exact same as a year ago but peak CCU still grows. That is totally possible.
Just admit you're butthurt about Steam doing well because you feel threatened. We all see it.

The CCU will continue to grow as Sony announces more PC games during their upcoming state of play
