Your favourite original video game composition

Pretty much the whole soundtrack is good. Artist coldstorage does nice stuff. You could put the PC version in a music player and it would play. Used to listen to it every day.

All of Ni No Kuni for sure. I'm a big Joe Hisaishi guy from the Studio Ghibli movies though so I'm biased.

Pretty much any track from TLOU P1 and P2.

Sharing Allowed to be Happy as it remains of the under-rated ones, but it is as beautiful as the best of the best nevertheless.

All the good music today is being wasted on blocky 8bit pixel art games.
Using high quality music in a game that looks like it was from the 1980's.
If your going to go retro you need to retro your music and sounds too.

Couple that comes to mind..
Dragon's Dogma - Into Free, such a weird and pumping intro, i would listen to it a few times before playing each time i launched the game, shame they removed it in DA.

Also same feeling with Bayonetta - Fly Me To The Moon

And lastly Nier Gestalt has the best full soundtrack ever made imo, loved every track to bits.

Probably Time's Scar or Dancing Mad. Dancing Mad for a piece made for an SNES game and the fact that it's like a real orchestral piece with several movements made it so ahead of its time. And it sounds amazing adopted for live orchestra.

Michael McCann's work is phenomenal. Deus Ex, Splinter Cell, XCOM. This guy should be in way more stuff

Chelsea Women Burn GIF by Barclays WSL

There's a few great licensed songs in there from Steve vai and Joe satriani, but most of Formula One's songs were done in house at Psygnosis. Awesome tracks from their audio crew.

YT playlist.

Island Swing is so remarkable in its energy and how it also switches to the calmer end portion. It still to this day never fails to make me beat my chest whenever I hear it.

Klomp's Romp is also amazing and together with Jib Jig my favourite from DKC2.

This track alone has more going for it than so much of the soulless orchestral background music that games so often put out.
Not original, but one of the best uses of music in a video game.

Very effective song choice by Kojima's team. Not many can use songs as well as they did.
One has to consider constraints.

I don't think constraints should be considered in terms of taking pity on them, if that's what you meant. These songs (and the rest of their soundtracks) are amazing at conveying what they need to convey. Koji Kondo's N64 music is a master at work.

The mid to late 90s NHL games had awesome menu music. A lot of electric guitar in a dystopian city feel. lol. A lot of stuff like this.

In my view, Sony will never surpass Nate's theme from Uncharted 4.

This is one of the most underrated scores in video game history in my view, only underrated by the fact that it is one of the best ever and isn't discussed regularly as such.

One of the things that worries me with the current trend of AAA western game development is not just stagnation in gameplay and creativity, but music also.

Uncharted trilogy music is better, it's funny you choose 4 when half of the music takes melodies from the original composers music. My guess is 4 is where you started the series. Nate's theme was written by Greg Edmonson.

I just like the piano keys mate (y)

Played through the trilogy on PS3 in 2013 after U3 was added to the instant game collection and then replayed them all in 2016 to get the platinum trophies.

Monty On The Run on the C64 by the great Rob Hubbard (both themes)

All of that from a 3 channel sound chip and written in a couple of kilobytes of code.

There is no Nate's theme in Uncharted 4. That one of the reasons it's the worst of the 4.

I think Nate's theme 2.0 is probably the best though I love 1.0 because it's the slowest and least bombastic. 3.0 is so sick with the trumpets too.

I think Drake's Elegy, the Uncharted theme, Cornered from U2 and finally, The Empty Quarter from U3 are some of the highlights of the trilogy.

Every score in 4 is pretty forgettable. Henry Jackman blew it.

Oh man, there's just way too many. It'd take forever to go through them all :D

Obviously so many classics from over the decades. But two of the more spectacular soundtracks from more recent years that I don't see mentioned often is God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok. Bear McCreary is an absolute master - his Rings of Power soundtrack is also phenomenal. But the God of War 2018 them is iconic:

And as incredible as that is, I think A Son's Path from Ragnarok might surpass it:
