That actually seems kinda low given the amount of buzz around it. Granted, that's just been the core gamer crowd... maybe that didn't translate to the more mass market audience?

That's a lot lower than it deserves based on how good I hear it is. Still, I suppose a non-Mario platformer cannot hope for much more

This is probably pretty successful for the likely budget of Astro, but would be a bonafide bomba if it were a new IP from someone like Naughty Dog or SSM. Star Wars Outlaws was just heralded as the biggest disaster in entertainment history for selling a million units in a few weeks. I honestly expected way more given the reviews and positive word of mouth in the "gamer sphere".

37% of PS5 owners only have Astrobot as the only game? Wha?

No, 37% of the 1.5 million do not own any other first-party games, emphasis on first-party.

Well it's an 80€ game so I think some people will be waiting for a price drop. It definitely didn't have a 200mil+ budget so it should be fine and there are good chances for a sequel.

That percentage is interesting though, Sony should consider making more pure fun, non-serious games.

Should be 10x that but let's see what kind of legs it has. Either way solid numbers vis a vis assumed dev costs and PlayStation now has a bonafide mascot that can appeal to *all* demographics 👌

That's.... somehow less than I expected it to sell, considering all the raving around the social media. I expected around 3 million.

The way people talked about this game and 3D platformers in general, you'd think it would've sold at least double that in the time since launch.

All that proves is that gamers on Switch buy more platformers

Deserves far more. Where are all you people that are whining that Sony needs more variety? We got a great game and you can't even have it sell 3m at launch?

Decent for what Astro Bot is, but I think this shows how many Gaffers are seriously overestimating demand for these kind of games (same as Stellar Blade).

While Astro Bot seems like the 'break-out title' for Team Asobi, these kind of numbers show why Sony is going with the Gaas-strategy.
They can't keep running their business on a few major titles each gen and a handful of these games, they need more steady revenue.

Sony needs to keep at it with naturing the astro bot brand. Besides the break out hit it takes two, all the other ips here have had multiple irritation of games over decades.

I think people are making the assumption that Astro Bot will have decent legs and will sell some numbers this holiday season, especially if it wins GOTY.

I think you had a handful of people assume it could hit 10 million, but no one took these people seriously.

The high water mark for non Mario 3d platformers is really like 7.5 million units lifetime. It'll be difficult for it to reach those kinds of numbers given the price of the PS5 making it unfriendly for kids/families.

We could also see an Astro Bot bundle this holiday season and a marketing campaign. So jury is out.

For sure.
Tbh, I already thought it had sold 10M copies, but maybe it's because of the people you mentioned.

In case of Astro Bot, I think it'll do better with their next title. Sony seems to be broadening their library for younger audiences with games like Astro and Lego Horizon.

Will be interesting to see how this will play out, as that demographic is the same as Nintendo's.

It will have huge legs though, especially after GOTY awards.

Anyway, with modest team and reasonable dev time/budget it's a clear success for Sony and Team Asobi.

Good results. The price was also great, disc versions were a steal. I grabbed a copy for 47 Euro in Septembre and a few days later it was even <45 Euro. I can understand why Sony/MS hate physical games :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Personally, the game deserves atleast thrice that, at the very least. It's brilliant, fun and most importantly, never boring. Shame more people aren't giving it a chance. Been showing off the game to my relatives's kids and their response has been unbridled joy.

Astro Bot was great and it deserves all the praise it got.

I can't wait to see what Asobi Team will do next, they are the only first party I care about from Sony.

I said 5m-7m lifetime and I expect it will get there. Also just because the game is very good, doesn't automatically means it's gonna sell massive numbers. I don't know why people expected that? Since when was this a major ip for sony?

If Sony continues to support games like this consistently (family friendly platformers) audiences will eventually recognize Playstation is a brand for that niche. 1.5 million copies in 9 weeks is a great start.

If I understand it correctly they haven't bought any first party game in last two years, not any game at all

The 37% of new users is users not owners. Much of this is probably people making actual accounts for their kids so they can play it. I almost made an account for my 5 year old, but he preferred playing on my save.

My hot take on sales is: What the flying fuck? Why only 1.5 million? The game is the only first party single player Sony game so you would think that even the people like me who have a PS5 for exclusives only would get it. Second it is a great family game. Both my kids enjoyed it.

I am kind of pissed. I want more of these games and with sales like this, that is not going to happen.

Well deserved. Based on where it landed on the US Year to Date chart (outside the top 20), I expected it to be around 1 to 1.5m.

I imagine with a team the size of Asobi and the nature of the game, they've probably already made a tidy profit on the game.

Hopefully, good word of mouth will give it 3-4m total sales over the next couple of years. They should really get it released on the PC asap. Whether this sort of revenue is enough to convince Sony to keep investing in Astro is another matter.

Wasnt RaCRA impacted by low install base of PS5 due console supply contraints at time?
Rift Apart came bundled in the EU (not sure about other regions). A friend of mine got this PS5 bundle because it was the only choice at the time, although he had no interest in actually playing the game.
