Astro Bot has sold 1.5 million copies

Reading from impression and how people rave about this online and from those Chris Eurocharts make it sound like it sold gamgbuster 5+ million.

1.5 million is kinda low to be honest

Rift Apart came bundled in the EU (not sure about other regions). A friend of mine got this PS5 bundle because it was the only choice at the time, although he had no interest in actually playing the game.
I'm from Europe myself. They didn't spam the Ratchet bundle like they spammed FBW or GOW:R bundles. There were also lots of drops of non bundled PS5s in 2021 while 2022 was like 99% bundles only.

Maybe it helps transform team asobi in one more gaas turd machine. But fair point.

Wouldn't surprise me. Sony were dumb enough to get their staple single player studios to try making live service multiplayer games. I don't trust the current management. It's the worst kind. Men in suits who know nothing about the experience of gaming or identity of the brand.

My hot take on sales is: What the flying fuck? Why only 1.5 million? The game is the only first party single player Sony game so you would think that even the people like me who have a PS5 for exclusives only would get it. Second it is a great family game. Both my kids enjoyed it.

I am kind of pissed. I want more of these games and with sales like this, that is not going to happen.
I feel people tend to focus on numbers too much without looking at various constraints. Truth is that return of investment for each game differs on case by case basis. I know 1.5 million may feel low, but I think from Sony's point of view the game was and is considered as a success. If it wasn't they most likely wouldn't mention it on their earning call. That's why I think they didn't mentioned for example how much Until Dawn remake has sold. So I don't think you should worry about it as Sony most likely already green-lighted next Astro Bot game

The budget for Astro Bot was probably a small fracture of what current blockbuster AAA games have this day so margin for making it profitable was probably significantly lower. Team Asobi isn't a large studio and they already created an entire foundation for this game when they worked on Astro's Playroom. So they didn't had to create all of this from scratch, but further iterate on systems, features and assets they already worked on earlier projects as Playroom wasn't even the first game using these characters. The game also doesn't have voice acting, so another big cost is out. The only thing I'm unsure is how much licencing different IPs costed them, but I assume it was in margins Sony found as acceptable

The 40% being new owners is the most interesting fact i think. Sony should definitely cultivate a culture where they produce not only the cinematic games they are known for but other genres like platformers with quality entries like Astrobot. You need to grow that segment. Bring more people in. Next game will have more sales etc etc.

And the genre is not for me i didn't buy the game but the platform definitely needs more diversity.

Not gonna lie, I thought it would've sold more by now. I could see it get a good bump during christmas though when parents "accidentaly" buys the GOTY thinking it's just a kid friendly cute game.

1.5m copies may seem low but what is the profit to cost ratio of the team that made it.

Pretty damn good, I'd be willing to bet.

This isn't a monster sized studio with a headcount in the hundreds.

I think this game will have some legs, specially when the deals start to pop in the store, a lot of players for some odd reason inform their purchase of a game based on things like campaign length and production values. This is a great game with great features, once it reaches the 40 dollars price I believe it will sell a lot more. Unfortunately I don't think it will ever be at the same ballpark of the more tradicional Sony AAA games.

Speaking from the UK, there has been no marketing at all. No TV ads (that I have seen) and nothing on billboards etc.

Maybe they will push it in the run up to Christmas, but I just get the feeling Sony have always been embarassed about games like this - they always want to push the idea that games are for adults, which is fair enough as I guess they are the ones who buy the consoles. Maybe the acclaim it got shocked them - who knows.

PC space will pick up the tab later.
Hope they don't annoy customers with another useless login for a single player game.

I thought this was at least at 3 million with the positive feedback everywhere and the number of positive reviews on PSN. These numbers pale in comparison to Nintendo platformers.

Super weird. These would be decent numbers if it was a launch game or something but not with the amount of PS5s out there. It's so hard for Sony to come up with a successful evergreen IP. Not surprising that they double down on Horizon, Marvel and the mirage of GaaS.

I told you that's this was going to happen… For the marketing, scores and expectation that the game had, i consider 1.5M a below mediocre results…. That's Metroid sales territory, and Metroid is considered a fail in sales for some people.

This was never going to be as big as some people were making out. I'd imagine most people who are going to buy it at full price have already bought it - time for a sale on Black Friday. I'll buy it when it hits $30. I'm sure it's good, but it's not full price for me - the character is overrated and it looks like it's very much a pastiche of older games I've played before - that's not a bad thing, but it's also not going to generate huge enthusiasm among non-hardcore Sony fans. Also, I can't get excited about 'collecting the parts of my crashed spaceship' again. One of the laziest gaming tropes.

Of course they do, how is that in any way surprising? Those are some of the biggest IP's in this entire industry and have been running for over 40 years.

The fact that it's even compared to Mario in terms of sales is a huge compliment.

It is with sadness and great regret that I have to officially revoke my nomination for Chris Dring for best gaming related tweet of the year.

Embarrassed? They advertised the hell out of this game! This is the mindset that got Japan Studios shut down in the first place. A lot of "this should've done better" but you never got out to buy and support the product. Someone here is already lamenting about the price and they're absolutely wrong about it. Using any excuse to show fake support online but never where it actually counts.

 Pack it up. It's over. The fanbase is hooked on gaas games(mostly the same few ones) and the rest have moved on to/are moving on to PC since PlayStation games are there now. The fanbase that's left doesn't buy shit that isn't cod, gta and them boyz unless the game goes viral like wukong. Sad state of affairs. Jim and Hermen hollowed out the platform. Profound sadness. And none of what I just said may be true....but I believe it!

I remember some people were predicting 10-15 Million for Astrobot in some not so old threads here, i think i bookmarked a few… Let me see. Now 1.5 million is an achievement… lol.

So it was a graveyard after all. Should have been on PC day 1 I guess.

Its been out out for less than 60 days. It's not even holiday yet. Plus with bf sales expect this number to jump considerably. Also on that other list, other than it takes two everything else are well established franchises.

Reading is fundamental.

37% or 555K haven't purchased a sony 1st party title in the last 2 years.
For many families PS5 is mainly a fortnite machine. That's just the reality. But it means there is a demand for family games on PS5.

What other similar games do we have on that machine? Sackboy? Ther rest of platformer games are either rubbish or shooters disguised as platformers.

Oof. That's kind of rough considering the rave reviews I've seen. I'll give it a buy sometime soon to pump those numbers up.

10-15M in 9 weeks?

Took Mario Odyssey 5-6 months to reach 10M iirc, which was also, at that point, the fastest selling Mario game ever in US and Europe.

Seems kind of low on the surface, but the game had like a 3 month turn around between its reveal and release or something right?

Not sure if that should affect sales, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did especially when you're asking people for almost full price for a 10 hour game.

...it is possible that the studios were interested in making one on their own (given gaming trends, and their own interest in doing so). If I recall correctly, Uncharted 2 had multiplayer because two of their developers started playing around with adding it first.

That actually seems kinda low given the amount of buzz around it. Granted, that's just been the core gamer crowd... maybe that didn't translate to the more mass market audience?
This was my take too. How the hell are the numbers so low for such an amazing game with such effusive praise and 10/10 reviews. I expected way more than this.

Schrodinger's Sony fan: both from the highest income households, able to buy 10 Pros at a time and also so poor they can't afford a full price game. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
