I have to agree with him, as far as state of plays go, that one was pretty decent. It was mostly Asian games, so no DEI bullshit and good looking characters, there was very little indie fodder and the Western games shown looked at the very least intriguing. Lack of first party? I'll take a spiritual successor to Returnal and a remaster of Days Gone over Intergalactic and Ghost of Yotei any day.

The only new and good thing from PlayStation Studios was Astro. Helldivers 2, SH2 Remake were revealed way back, MHW is coming to every platform, why the hell I would rate this is a good SoP because of them?

Similarly for the newest SoP, I'm all sure that Onimusha, Tides of Annihilation, and other third party games would be great, but what do have to do with PlayStation?

We simply have different points/tastes and that certainly don't make you know better what's good or not than me.

Third party never was explicitly stated as the premise of State of Play.

The fact that Colin is even acknowledging it, is pretty telling. The reception was pretty bad.

Concord's monumental flop was a wake up call and I think it actually damaged Sony's image a bit. They were very quick to bury it in the dirt though, so good on them for that. I mean that decision is a historic one.

I think since then, it has kind of painted a target on Sony's back from fans and critics, and rightfully so. That along with the absurd focus on remakes and remasters from just last generation, it feels like they have just been treading water this gen. Those of us that follow the industry knew Sony had changed their creative direction to gaas and preachy, forced DEI agendas in their games.

Everything they show from here on out is going to be met with a lot of side-eye and presumptions, given the rep they have built for themselves this gen. Until we see some more real course correction, Sony will be in the hot seat.

Whether it really matters or not at this point is another topic. Sony will be fine since they have the de-facto home console for all third parties at this point.

People watch these to be blown away by something awesome and surprising. One awesome surprise game turns it from a D to an A. That's all people want. It's why people like Nintendo's shows, because they will put in at least one or two things that make people say "wow", it doesn't even have to be something huge, like go back to the thread about the Xenoblade X reveal, that wasn't even in a Direct, just a random drop, but people loved it.

Like if Sony put in a Resistance or Motorstorm collection, then I guarantee it would have gotten way more buzz than it got.

Considering it was just a February SoP, it featured several great games plus many other games that may not be top quality games and aren't for everybody but will be loved by the niche/player type they target.

They can't drop a dozen megatons here because they also have to fill the 'E3' SoP, the September TGS SoP, plus give something to the Doritos Awards and Summer Doritos Fest, plus also to fill a few other SoP across the year. And well, this is only for this year: they obviously also have to same games for other years.

Even in that case, Xbox and Nintendo fanboys would still say that it was bad. And the Sony fans would like that SoP but would complain because after it, in the next 2-3 years they wouldn't have any great announcement in any event (this time for real).

We've seen that individually the games at the State of Play were positively received.

I think the problem with the perception around the State of Play itself is more nuanced than someone like Colin can comprehend.

People aren't viewing the SoP in a vacuum. People didn't want a SoP to begin with, they wanted a showcase. So when you're already disappointed from the get go, it's not likely you'll go up from there.

Sony has a presentation problem more than anything else. They aren't doing a good enough job curating the games they're showing. If I were to show anyone 40 games, the majority of people aren't going to be interested in more than 5 or 6 games. So watching a show filled with games you're not interested in only to end the show with a CG trailer showing no gameplay... yeah, that's not a great way to end a show.

The Day's Gone Remaster didn't help the narrative either, though Sony has always done remasters.

Sony has a perception problem and that's not a hot take to point that out. It's like the NBA All-Star game with Kevin Hart actively shitting on the game because big men are shooting 3s. People watching aren't going to perceive that well, especially if they miss a bunch in a row right after he says that.

I vividly remember the 2018 Sony conference which lasted 1 hour and showcased 4 games : Tlou, Tsushima, Spiderman and DS with long ass gameplay demoes.

Or the 2016 conference that opened with the orchestra and a live demo of Gow, followed by gameplay of Horizon, days gone, the last guardian, Detroit and RE7. In just 30minutes.

That's the kind of shows that I want, big games, GAMEPLAY demoes and ambition ffs.

Sounds like Nintendo wanted their platform to succeed so they redesigned it, invested in the hardware and software to make it succeed. Just like Sony has been doing with third party money hats for the last 30 years.
