Monster Hunter Wilds - DF Tech Review - PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S - Graphics & Performance

Man, I feel bad for anyone who will be playing in perf mode. The low res coupled with FSR1 makes the image quality atrocious.

So it wasn't a Dragon's Dogma 2 thing. RE Engine seems like it trully is fucked up for open worlds.

Yeah, they're doing too much with it now. Reminds me of EA forcing all their studios to use Frostbite for a while.

But for the RE games it was made for its fantastic. RE2 remake still looks very good to me and runs on anything.

but series-x has better VRR support

I mean yeah ..

PS5 has a couple of frames higher when running Resolution mode uncapped but it will be a choppy, kinda unplayable, experience. Capping either Res or Balanced is the better way to play on PS5, but that removes any advantage.

120hz VRR display owners on SX will have a much smoother experience when playing uncapped cause of system level support.

I think the patch for PS5Pro is released on the first day of release for users?..... Could it be a reason too.
Can't be, their video is coming tomorrow. Unless the Pro patch isn't out yet and they'll make another video for that after launch. Gotta get those views.

This game's performance is appalling, honestly. Regardless of which console you choose, none of them are running this sloppy beast well.

This is also confusing to me? The fuckin beta has a full day/night cycle. You can even open the map and it shows you with a big infographic exactly what weather you can expect and when it's going to be night and what monsters will be there and when.

This whole tech analysis reads as undercooked.

I did a double check to make sure I didn't mis-heard, but yeah Oliver says it has a fixed time of day.

As far as I know they do it to be able to easily re-use assets between projects. I'd expect to see more than a few monster animations from DD2 making their way into MHWs.

Bummer that the game is so dead color-wise.
Some areas look kinda cool, but the desert area sure looks like shit imo.
Which is weird. DD2 ran on the same engine and it looked better color-wise. Environment was fine and the spell effects looked amazing.

In any case yeah I don't like how it looks. People will laugh at me but I find MHGU more visually pleasing.

Yes well he also says the game is washed out and then admits in a slide that he has not calibrated the display.

My confidence in this dude is waning fast. During the beta, a given quest may be locked to a specific inclemency, but time does progress normally. This has been a function in several past MH games. I positively REFUSE to believe that there is no time of day here.

Why people pick a screenshot zoomed at 300% and saying "LOOK, THIS IS SO BLURRED".

Are you playing at zoomed 300%?

This. Haven't watched it all yet but seeing the opening footage I was like holy shit he didn't calibrate?

World also had night and day cycle...

I'm watching the gameplay and without zoom I can spot those blurred scenes.

IDK what are you about here in a Digital Foundry Tech Review video. Unless you want to piss off the mods.

What is the point of including an uncapped framerate mode on PS5 if you're not going to include LFC support? Man, so many developers these days are just clueless…

Capcom added LFC support to the PS5 version of DD2 a few months after launch, this will / should probably be the same.

But, yeah, should have been at launch.

If it wasn't for the Pro I'd be playing this on Series X just for the superior VRR like I did with Dragons Dogma 2.

Already have it preordered for Pro so hopefully it is better performance wise than both the series x and ps5

If Sony is smart, they hopefully sent people to Capcom to help them with the pro. Would be a good selling point for the console given how big the Monster Hunter player base is. Guess time will tell

Besides DF is there no one who played the PS5 Pro Version?

IGN did. They reviewed on the Pro. Now did they play with the day 1 patch or not, I have no idea. Didn't even get into much detail other than "looks great, except for some texture pop-in in heavy scenes". Thanks IGN!

The blur and missing effects like worse GI are obvious in any viewing angle.

The zoom is showing how the finer texture details are also missing.

I wouldn't play this in Performance mode, personally. Balanced seems like the sweet spot on Xbox.

Angry mods?

We know very well that the game has technical performance issues on ALL platforms

And pretending that the game will run better on PC with equivalent configuration (which is absolutely FALSE) under the pretext of launching a childish platform war tires me.

Even on big configurations that are 3x the price of the PS5, the game has performance issues. And Capcom asks you to ENABLE FrameGeneration when starting the game. Which also INCREASES the input lag

And saying that you have to pay 3x the price of a PS5 to "enjoy a game" is absolutely stupid.

They didn't create a whole ass new engine just to "re-use assets", assets are completely engine independent and can be imported into practically any engine.
The purpose of RE Engine was to streamline certain processes that even with MT-Framework took too much time:
The main feature of the RE ENGINE is itsability to dramatically reduce the time required for various game development processes. For example, the time required to test program changes has been reduced 90%,and materials made separately by creators can be combined in real time, which enables them to be used to instantly create other materials.
No you won't see animations from DD2 in mhwi 🙄

It looks so washout, I dont understand it
The washout look is from footage that uses the game brightness setting on default. The game asks you to adjust the sliders using some images. Most games are fine on default but MHW will look washed out if you leave these brigness settings on default.

Thought i was running the DF at video at 360P mode instead of 4K, jesus

Easily the ugliest AAA game this gen, some textures aren't even PS4 worthy.

I know the resolution in Performance mode is lower.
But saying that the 300x zoomed version and saying "this is what you get on your screen at 6ft" is again very dishonest

Where is this PC analysis that you basing all of this on?

Completely agree. It's baffling that the artists thought this was a good look for the game. It just looks so... 'off'... like someone has turned up the Brightness setting by mistake. Thankfully, my interest in the Monster Hunter games only extends to how it looks visually - I tried the PC benchmark - as try as I might I've just never been able to get into these games despite having tried both World and Rise. The gameplay just seems incredibly simplistic and repetitive. Do people just enjoy playing this in co-op or something?

All RE Engine game have brightness issue for me. This isn't very new.
Monster Hunter Wild looks like is a game crafted on HDR, wich Im sure it increase the "washed look" on SDR capture / video

The PC version isnt much better. I had to run Framegen to get 60fps with the benchmark demo thing on my 3070, although that was at max settings and native rez.

Thats why i played the entire demo at 30fps (res mode). Never saw a game so blurry as this one in performance mode. Looks like the balanced mode will be the one im picking in the final game.
