What are your *Actual* hot takes regarding video games? I mean ACTUAL stuff that would get people riled up?

People who cry "woke" or "DEI" or "Sweet Baby" about modern games because there is someone other than a muscular white dude or large breasted women as the main character have deep down mental and sexual identity issues of their own.
This. Especially on this forum. It's fucking embarrassing.

"I don't like this 'ugly' character," but let me rush to post an Asmongold video

Elden Ring, BG3, Dark Souls, Monster Hunters games, Red Dead Redemption games are overrated and not interesting.

Doom 3 is by far the best Doom game, other ones are mid.

Half Life 1 is way better than Half Life 2.

Majora's Mask is the best Zelda game followed by Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess as third. Also BOTW and TOTK's art style are nasty and ugly.

The latter two isn't that much of a hot take compared to the first two I guess.

Nintendo is for kids.

- Classic Tomb Raider games influenced gaming design in a much bigger way than we give them credit for nowadays. I see puzzle games like ICO taking credit for stuff Tomb Raider was doing one generation before and we should talk more about it.

- Microsoft entering gaming did nothing positive for the console industry or anything else. First one to add paid online in gaming (everyone else was doing it for free), paid DLCs (which others followed), and even recently with...paying publishers to have 3 day-exclusivity over games announced at their shows so they wouldn't say said games would be multiplatform. Most IPs they own weren't created by them (even Halo) and were just lucky to have a company such as Microsoft behind them, otherwise they would be dead for like 20 years probably. The money they are spending on trying to rebrand Xbox as if leaving the console market is this huge move like going 3rd party was always the goal is laughable as well and their "play anywhere and in any device" move is a desperate measure to throw all the shit at the wall to see if any of it sticks. They don't know how to handle a business such as gaming and that will never change.

- I don't get how Pokemon games get the praise they get nowadays. They look terrible, aren't that fun and are being carried by brand recognition only.

- From Software games in general are boring, badly optimized games saved by their level design. Everything else around that is mediocre as fuck, from fighting mechanics, graphics, performance, etc...

- Final Fantasy IX is the best JRPG of all time and i'll die on this hill. Yes...even how it all gets batchit crazy at the end is just * chef kiss*

The remake treatment as in rape the original by removing depth and character and fill the gaps with superficial kingdom heart fluff? Careful what you wish for.
It's a risk I'm willing to take and an outcome I can endure, I can always go back to the original 🤷

2- SOMA is a mediocre game at best. Its only "Horror" or "Deep" or "Philosophical" because it reflects the player's own insecurity regarding his/her place in the universe, and what comes after. It's made from the ground up as misery porn for nihilist-esque mindsets.
This one is good as well. I played through this slog of a game recently because people talked about the ending. The "twist" at the ending was something that already happened in the middle of the game and the only one surprised was the protagonist because he is a dumbass.

It's time to let go of those old giant pillars (EA, Ubisoft, Activision) and look into newer publishers. They are out there and have been trying to get your attention, but they simply don't have the level of money as the huge 3rd party AAA guys do. Many of you probably used to try random games from random unknown publishers and devs when you were younger, especially those bargain bin games or oddball 7/10 experiences that give you something unique, even if it was somewhat janky.

Now people are afraid to even go near a slightly unpolished AA or indie game unless they see others singing praise of it, and even then it has to pass a bunch of random parameters before a demo of it is touched.

How can any company grow when they are being stifled from both ends (larger corps and gamers) at the very beginning? On top of that, if they're not Japanese, they have to walk a tightrope 1000ft in the air around culture war issues and hope that a random grifter doesn't torpedo their game's image before it even releases. It's just even more of a lottery system at that point.

The usual. The Super Mario Galaxy games are the most boring 3D Mario games. And anime JRPG character design is garbage.

Zelda games are highly overrated.

Nintendo is one of the most greed game companies out there and their fans base the worst.

Woman as protags in video games are 90% of the time annoying nowadays.

PS5pro runs MHWilds worst than a RTX 2060 ( Image quality speaking ) and PSSR is a vasiline mode compared to DLSS.

Sekiro is highly overrated too, its should be called parry the video game, cause is all you gonna do.

here are somes.

There is no need to have fan service or nudity/sex scenes in video games. That doesn't mean characters should be uggos. It just means we don't need to see tits and dicks.

That the current ones are already quite boring.

Too limited, uninteresting stories.

I can't even play more than 30 minutes a day anymore, even if it's a weekend.

That maybe they harm people, but I doubt it because not everyone is affected.

I did an experiment to find out if the current ones are boring or it's nostalgia.

And I found that indeed the games from before were more interesting in stories, characters or gameplay.

The problem is the recent games that are crap

Every console manufacturer should take extreme measures in gate-keeping games on their consoles, and should openly sign exclusive content rights with 3rd party publishers, and porting to PC or competition shouldn't even be on the table (i.e. M$: fumbled the bag big time, Sony: In the process of fumbling the bag, Nintendo: Rather good regarding this till now).

BIG FACTS OP - I think Sony should go no further.

1. Digital Future is trash and only for the lazy. No plus side for the consumer, zero ownership, loss of everything really. Giving away rights over convenience
2. Soulsborne games are so played out. Yea get good- ok.
3. Skull and Bones was fun when you actually play it rather than hate on a corp and judge the first 15min. Atleast for a huge majority.
4. Open world racers are basically watching the map racers so you dont miss turns. Please go away
5. Its only cool to hate on Gamestop. When its gone we will be sad. Those games we owned, that we decide what to do with em and sell em back for a quick buck (especially kids) to buy new releases - we lose all that in the process.
6. Gaming community is unfortunately a bunch of suckers that allow things to pass in favor of screwing ourselves over perceived value or "extra" "bonuses" Pay to play online, preorders, collectors editions, unfinished games, microtransactions the list goes on and we accept it. I blame it on sharing a hobby with kids.
7. Lets get back to under 20hr games.

1) Story in games is always bad compared to books, movies, even TV shows.
2) Long games over 20 hours should be banned

While technically impressive, Devil May Cry 5 and Monster Hunter Wilds are ugly games with boring, desaturated, unappealing colors. Stop chasing photorealism and go back to stylized graphics.

- World of Warcraft graphics is horrible by today's standard. Everything in the world looks like a miniature.

- Halo is a dead franchise and the only reason why it still sells is because of nostalgia factor.

- Microsoft killed Battletoads by making the last game look like a Saturday morning cartoon.

- Nobody wants to spend money on games with ugly, unappealing characters.

- Digital Foundry is the audiophiles of game graphics, absolute snob.

2) Long games over 20 hours should be banned
Are you one of those poor souls who barely get 30 minutes to game before bedtime?

Just enough time to boot up

Praying the game doesn't hit you with a 10 minute unskippable cutscene

🤡

-Just like PC gaming is superior to console gaming, VR gaming is superior to all of flatscreen gaming now, which has been stale for entire console generations.

-"I don't want to wave my arms around with a brick on my head!". It's healthier than vegging out on your couch in front of a screen. Move that body!

-Motion sickness? Stop being genetically inferior, or train until you can overcome it. No pain, no gain.

  • Hideo Kojima is a complete hack and Death Stranding is absolute fucking garbage...so was Metal Gear Solid IV.
  • The God of War reboot is for emotionally stunted manbabies in their 30s learning how to be dads and the end result is mawkish tripe that is a stain on the series' legacy.
  • Digital Foundry fans are basically one tier above incels.
  • People that complain about Ubisoft open-world games are whiny little bitches that probably haven't even played one in recent years; they simply parrot complaints they hear or see online and pass them off as their own.

Game IP that go past 5 games should be put out to Pasture.
No more Mario, Gears of War, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, God of War, Uncharted, Halo, Zelda, GTA, Elder Scrolls, Resident Evil, Fallout(76 is your 5th and final).

Movie games like Hellblade are utterly pointless and shouldn't exist.

Most western RPGs are boring and aimless, even the so called classics.

The only good FPS franchises are Doom + Halo and Halo 5 is one of the best games in the franchise

Sucker Punch and Sony Santa Monica are mediocre as fuuuuuuuuuuu

I'll reserve judgement on GOT, but the prior Sucker Punch titles I played were so bad to me that I don't see myself ever playing GOT.

Dark Souls reputation as good games is massively overblown. Because they are hard and tedious to beat they have created an elitist club of players/journalists who actively defend the crap cameras, enemy clipping, cheap tricks and overly punishing nature of the boss design. 'Git gud' is essentially 'deal with the same bullshit I did'. Dark Souls 3 is the only entry approaching a decently made game.

That's not to say there's no respect for players who choose to spend all their time and effort into beating the game. Obviously anyone who repeatedly attacks the game back, and learns all its nuances is playing at a high level but we've seen 90% of the game is just pure unbalanced attrition that only requires time and memory. But most of the defence for the series is borne from players who don't want their 'achievement' being reduced or contextualised.

Aloy is hot and Horizon is a franchise that can be the future of SIE but it needs to do a better job of onboarding the combat and reducing the paralysing weapon choices/changing.

Avowed seems to be over rated because it is 'easy' and chose not to balance half the combat allowing crazy metas. Which is fine - it makes the game 'fun' and enjoyable but I find it has a reputation it doesn't quite deserve currently.

Crystal Dynamics 'Tomb Raider' games were unfairly maligned and carried the brunt of criticism that should have also been aimed at similar games.

JRPGs need about 75% less dialogue.

AI will have a huge NET positive on open world games, NPCs, generated dialogue etc. and it will make all those things much better

Astro's Playroom is a blatant scam by Sony to make me feel nostalgic for hardware I still own.

The Demon's Soul Remake was intentionally made to look like I could actually beat it this time.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart conveniently forgot to explain why I can fall from one universe into another but still take fall damage in combat.

Gran Turismo 7 is a stunningly realistic driving simulator that made getting a license in-game harder than real life.

In Marvel's Spider-Man 2 I can web-slinging across an entire borough but can't cross the Brooklyn Bridge.

Tekken 4 wasnt nearly as bad as people claim and 90% of all "issues" would've been resolved with beefier block pushback and looser BDc.

Armored Core 6 is inferior to OGs simply due to the fact that energy management took a backseat and youre no longer playing as the pilot, but are now the mech - in terms of input and feel. Two pillars of what made AC, thrown aside

^This post WINS I've been on GAF for a long time and I don't think I've ever disagreed with a post more than this one
this is the exact opposite of my opinions about those games

I could write a book about all the things wrong with Tekken 4 and those two things were holding AC back until AC6..IMO

Bloodborne ranks number 4 in From Software Souls games.
Elden Ring
Dark Souls 3
Dark Souls 1
Bloodborne
Dark Souls 2

Not counting Sekiro...because there's no multiplayer and the combat and gear systems are vastly different

Come at me.

From games start off great but are almost always a boring slog for the at least the last 1/3

Metaphor was good but the Persona social link mechanic is kind of played out

The addition of light to medium RPG mechanics to third party narrative heavy action games was a very good development that makes games better

Next gen should focus more on making development easier/cheaper rather than pushing higher end graphics capabilities

Monster Hunter is trash
