Nintendo - Switch 2 Upgrade Packs are $9.99

Basically a resolution and framerate increase. There is no standard price by the sound if it.

Edit: I must have missed the extra Zelda content.

Lol what are the odds the pricing for this is a response to the backlash for their other pricing.

A $10 upgrade is fine and in line with the current industry standard. Now let's talk about those $80 games...

I don't think that's universal. Arent the ones with additional content like Kirby and Mario Party $20?

BOTW and ToTK are both $10 more for the physical compared to last-gen $70 and $80 respectively.

Kirby and Mario Party are both $80, $20 more than they launched on Switch 1.

It's free if you have NSO. That's very very reasonable.

Also my theory on MKW pricing is they will be offering MANDATORY FREE future DLC content updates and have baked that into the price.

Because of the open world structure and heavy emphasis on online gameplay they can't have a scenario where some players have the new continents/maps and some don't. If that's the case then the price makes more sense.

I'm not as outraged as some. As things stand I can only see myself upgrading BOTW from my Switch library. Maybe Mario Odyssey if that gets an upgrade too. I haven't bought TOTK yet so I'll wait to get the S2 version.

None. There's an imagen from japanese marketing that says this costs ¥1000 and Kirby's costs ¥2000 from a day after the presentation so they basically had the prices already set

I read the thing and all the Nintendo guy said was:

"Trinen: Well, again, what I would say is that we just look at each individual game and we look at the content and the value of that game, and then we say, 'what is the right price for the value of this entertainment?' What I would probably counter to some of that is that really what you're looking at is for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, that's the physical price for somebody that has not bought the base game.

For somebody who has bought Tears of the Kingdom or Breath of the Wild, the upgrade packs for those are $9.99. "

He clearly says they set prices on a case by case basis and then says specifically for Zelda BOTW is $9.99. This is not confirmation all upgrade packs will be $9.99.

Still too expensive for just an up-res and improved framerate though, imo.

But if it's the same for stuff like Kirby that actually include new content it sounds decent.

Less expensive than I expected, I can live with it. But boost mode should've been free, of course. Nintendo knows it themselves, that's why they've added some meaningless bullshit that most people wouldn't bother it, just so they can combine it with the higher frame-rate and resolution and offer a package "deal". Anyway, salt aside, fair price.

"Sounds reasonable!"

So we've gotten to the point where we defend pricing resolution/framerate improvements for a game we own? Gamers deserve nothing.

Not bad, but still... it should be free if you own Switch 1 version, as the only extra "content" you get is the second save slot 😅

No, you need NSO + Expansion, which is $50/year. NSO by itself is $20/year.

It's a different version for a different system.

Why shouldn't you pay for extra development work?

This SW2 versions also guarantee those particular SW1 games work correctly on SW2 since many games including some of their own have BC issues to downright total incompatibility. So the emulation is part of the cost.

Yeah, I'm sure it took 100 hours and the entire development team to increase the frame rate to 60. That totally justifies a 6th of the games cost. Eventually we'll get to the point where we have to pay for fixes on a game like Cyberpunk, and people like you will find a way to justify it for them.

This is the kind of content that should be an update. You should not have to pay for graphics.

Consoles should be BC out of the gate. That, or it should be a free update for the console, just like Xbox did.

Why do you think you're entitled to something for free while somebody put work into it?

I can live with that. And I saw gameplay on both Zeldas and holy shit, it was a night and day difference. Looked incredible. Tears is definitely getting a replay on Switch 2 (as that's the better game).

Or, they could do nothing with it.

$10 is perfect.

Now as long as they don't raise console prices we are back on track.

Why are you acting like this is new? Paid upgrades have been the reality on the console side since forever.

If it's the same for Metroid Prime 4 then buying Switch 1 version and then Upgrade pack might be the way to go.
I'd be surprised if they do it for that game because it will be brand new. This seems more for legacy titles.

Otherwise everyone would likely do this workaround to save some bucks.

To be fair? It's just digital anyway so Nintendo isn't really losing anything.

Since I'm weary of Key cards I'm curious if the Switch 1 version is the only way to have a actual Physical cartridge. Would hate to learn all Switch 2 games are all Key Cards.

If it's a substantial update then that's kind of fair. I hope Atlus provides this for SMT:V. But knowing them they'll release a separate version for SW2...and then an "extreme-ultimate-super-complete" version 2 years later. All at $79.99 full price of course. 😅
