I just started Octopath Traveler 2 and I'm already broken

After I finished Octopath Traveler 1 and made a thread here, I just downloaded OT2 to set it up on my gamepass PC for future play. As I was doing my first launch config in the settings I was listening to the OST and vibing to the massive goosebumps it was giving me with its magnanimity and awesomeness. After going back to the menu from the setting having heard it about 2.5 times I saw the [RT Change Time] prompt on the bottom right.

I pressed the button. There was a chime. The screen cinematic instantly faded to night time while still going. The music that was a bombastic orchestra turned into a soft nostalgic lullaby of piano, chimes and hums over a short fade..I had no clue this game had night time......

This is by far one of the most beautiful (both musically and artistically) additions I've seen added to a game. This OST now officially sits in my top 10 GOATs. Both versions.

Fuck me I don't think my heart can handle this game if the menu alone made my eyes moist.

PS: Tha game is only 7gb. Download it on gamepass if you care to experience what I experienced.

It makes me happy to see more people enjoying these games. I thought 1 was a stronger story with better characters than 2, but 2 fleshes out their characters more. Music and ambiance was great in both though.

We have a topic about the price of nintendo games i think.

Is it really that good? I kinda bounced off of Octopath 1 because I didn't like that the party in that game never even acknowledges the existence of the other characters.

In my opinion Octopath 2 should have won best soundtrack that year, it's OST was AMAZING!

The game as whole was absolutely fantastic!

When entering this thread I thought you meant you'd already found a strategy which broke the game and made everything too easy.

One of my favourite games from last year. Please keep sharing your impressions!

There's a lot more connections between them in this game. There's still some disconnect as you have to be able to play any chapter in any order.

I haven't played 2 yet but I remember dropping the controller on the first Octopath Traveler just to listen to the music.

It's just slightly disappointing that the narrative and story telling isn't as strong as the OST imo. There are all these characters dropping from nowhere with little background and the game ask you to care about them like they were final fantasy characters.

Spent 10 hours in Octo 2 and found it painfully boring and almost like a Random JRPG Generator. I hadn't played one since my teens in the 90s and only made it to 10 hours because I paid full price for it and forced myself. I also hated the voice acting and turned that off.

It's a really nebulous complaint but the game just feels empty to me, like a rote nostalgia trip and pastiche of the genre's glory days. I ended up uninstalling it and replaying Chrono Trigger instead.

Yeah I felt the same way. I always wanted the characters to come together and form one story l, going after the common villain after their background stories. But they're all silent for the most part when their story wasn't on display?

SaGa Frontier 1 did the same thing, but I love that game much more.

They do things to address this in the sequel.

If only the photoshop filters on top of this game used less 14 year old girl on insta vibes.

Colors are completely broken.

I could never get into a JRPG.

I have tried Persona 5 and Dragon Quest 11 on PS4. Persona 3 Reload and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes on PC with controller. And lastly Visions of Mana and Unicorn Overlord demos on PS5.

Persona 5 bored me after playing 3-4 hours. DQ11 was extremely boring from the beginning. Persona 3 Reload had interesting plot but I got bored while playing it on PC. Maybe I can try this on PS5. Eiyuden Chronicle also started strong but again I didn't like playing it on PC. Visions of Mana and Unicorn Overlord were also extremely boring.

I still want to try Metaphor and SMT V: Vengeance. But I am pretty sure I will get bored too haha.

Do you think Octopath Traveller II would be different from these? Or JRPGs just are not for me?

I think OT2 is one of the best games out this gen and my favourite 2DHD game. The music and artsyle are both superb, absolutely loved it.

Indeed. It is one of the greatest soundtracks of modern time. I really hope they let him score his own FF.

I dont like the social life sim aspects of persona and didnt like the first ours of DQXI either ... each Jrpg has its strengths... you have to power trough the first hours of story set up ... but OT 2 although very story heavy has very good gameplay from the get go . And I get much more mature vibes from it than those other games.

If you want Try sea of stars or chained echoes .. they are smaller and more direct .. great gameplay loop for turn based rpgs without the extra bullshit

Exactly what I was thinking but didn't want to say it. Game actually has good pacing, like Chrono Trigger. Battles are interactive. Every screen has at least some minimal interesting level design requiring climbing, jumping, etc. The game actually has a couple minor puzzles. And you can wrap it up in 30 hours.

I'd hate JRPGs as well if all I tried is Persona and Dragon Quest.

P.S. Sea of Stars technically isn't a JRPG, but close enough.

I quit about 10 hours in, because no doubt another game came along. I'd jump back in, but I'd be short-changing Xenoblade Chronicles X, which is YUGE!

Enjoy!

I had the same issue with 1. I heard the second fixed that, but now I feel like I need to finish 1 to really enjoy 2 so I just bounced off the series lol

I caught a Light Revenant pretty early on and that made my party pretty powerful. I put some time into it and then dropped it for some odd reason. That took some time to get too. Maybe I'll finish it someday.

Yeah, Octopath games are awesome. Also look into Bravely Default Remaster coming out on Switch 2. They are both by the same team, and while they have different composers, they're both pretty epic.

You can share with me if you can't go through it OP. I'm eager to playing both OP1 and OP2 again. Now I'm just waiting for Bravely Default remaster. If anything I'm digging more this type of RPGs from Square than their FF games. Only FF game that I'd put above these are if Square brings back FF Tactics or makes a Tactics 2.

I have never played the bravely games but the artstyle was kind of grating on me. Is the story/gameplay really worth it? Roman Empire Roman Empire

Im pretty much with you on this. I still don't see what the big deal is, and I finished the first one. Haven't touched the second, will probably go on Ebay.

I do think that Octopath games deserve a try, I can speak on part 1 only because thats what I have completed, but you can read what the others' said here about Part 2 for more insight.
One thing in common in the vast majority of jrpg games is that they tend to have very slow exposition filled starts, and long winding dialogues and a lot of meandering about.
Octopath games are different because they are very modular by design; there are 8 protagonists with therir own tightly written story thats rather not too long, and in the first game there was no overlap between them at all. You can pick and choose any story fro the start and then progress any one of the 8 MCs' story whenever or however you want. For this reason Octopath games have relatively little dialogue and exposition and meandering about beyond the main plotline; that may be a reason for the game(s) to stick with you when the other jrpgs failed to do so.

Been playing on Steamdeck before bed time and what a joy it has been to discover this gem. Feels like a lost SNES game with the best graphics ever. The music is indeed special and I'm loving the characters I've encountered so far. It's made me hope that Square continues making these smaller but in my opinion big games.

Alex Muokala on Youtube (a music producer) has a great rundown of why the music in the first game was so special:

Bullshit game pass user do not play Japanese games.

Octopath 2 is absolute banger. I love all the little mechanics of each character. Being able to read every single npc thoughts, being able to take regular np s with you to meet others for quests, bribe for party support etc is so cool.

Buy Super C Baby Powder Odor Counteractant

Bought Octopath Traveler 2 but I'm a bit confused about how I'm supposed to approach the story/game

The game's a fucking masterpiece, but it flew under the radar for most people. I didn't expect much from it, but I got one of the most completely engaging JRPGs I've ever played, and I realized while I was playing it that it's probably going to be a long time before another RPG gets me this completely. I think I had a kind of similar experience to you, where it was super cool when the game started, but then you get to a night scene, and it's just like... indescribably atmospheric. Really just masterful stuff.

I haven't played the original, but I've heard it's not as good... I do want to get around to it at some point, though.

Despite the good music, the first game never clicked. I just couldn't feel engaged in it. Felt like pieces put together that totally lacked any kind of connection. And gameplay wasn't particularly interesting. Also that blur effect was unbearable.

As years passed I have started being a bit annoyed at overly dramatic, over the top music. Some of these are just trying to hard. But this is more about personal taste.
