Marathon has me cautiously optimistic, more optimistic than cautious for the moment. I do want to believe that Bungie knows that they can't fuck this up. Especially not in comparison to something like Concord, which crashed and burned not all that long ago. That was such a special, embarrassing disaster that (hopefully...) served as a lesson as what NOT to do when trying to get people interested in playing a game, as it should.
One of a few things making me hopeful is how it's been promoted. The past week of Bungie just being on their ARG shit (which is fun to see again) has been interesting to watch play out and seeing people get invested. Another thing is the first trailer from years back and its visual style, which we're seeing more of now. It's a design that definitely gives me The Designers' Republic vibes (therefore reminding me of WipEout, so I'm slightly biased towards it), and I personally think it looks great. If anything, Marathon has a clear, defined visual identity that actually seems confident in itself, which can count for a lot. Unlike Concord, this doesn't feel like something that was Overcooked by Committee in a vat desperately trying to hit a bunch of theoretical checkboxes in an attempt for maximum appeal to everyone ("theoretical", because it fuckin' backfired hilariously badly) for a new IP to get milked. This actually seems like it might be cool.
Even then, I really cannot blame anyone at all for being skeptical (within reason). Between factors like Bungie's own problems (not just with Destiny), Marathon being a live-service game, and the fact that it's an Extraction shooter, it's only fair that people are asking questions. What I want to see is that the gameplay reveal tomorrow has all the things it needs to get people invested and gives them a real reason to care. This seems obvious, but getting people interested is an important first step for a reveal, which is apparently not obvious enough. Marathon needs to come correct, and it needs to come out swinging fast and hard.
