Marathon Releases September 23, 2025

Art is so friggin sick
Look retarded bud. But keep the hype coming.

In terms of pricing, I wonder if Bungie could do both F2P and a paid release.
  • F2P = access to 1 runner that you can progress through 1 faction, don't have access to purple or gold tier loot but can access all the weapons.
  • $10 purchase to unlock additional Runners and unlock purple/gold loot. Gain access to additional faction.
  • $40-50 = access to all runners, all factions, all loot.
Seems like a good idea to me? Entice people that won't pay full price, but they can still play the game in a limited fashion and unlock Runners at their preference.

Way too convoluted. Bungie will sell a couple million copies at launch no matter what, imo. They have too many die hard fans that love their gunplay. The only reason Bungie would consider a F2P model is if they were genuinely concerned the playerbase would not stick around due to lack of content at launch

And after games like The Finals and X-Defiant, I doubt we see anymore F2P AAA GAAS games. The gaas industry is such a massive gamble that these studios desperately need upfront sales money to cushion the blow if the game ends up failing

Marathon hopes to be around for 10+ years, so I doubt they care too much about their launch numbers, as long as they are big enough to keep the lights on. From that perspective, Bungie would be leaving a lot of money on the table by making it F2P

I don't think it's too convoluted, if the game is great it'll entice people to buy up

I agree though that I don't think it's necessary, but I don't think it would be leaving money on the table because it would be pretty restrictive in terms of progression and if people enjoy the game they will want to pay for the full experience

Make it simpler.

People who pay full price for the game get two "friend slots" - Can't think of a cooler sci fi term.

Each friend slot gets 3 infil credits per week. Friend slots are able to store 5 infil credits in total. 1 credit = 1 infiltration.

That let's people try the game in an ideal scenario (with friends) but they get just a taste.

Change your avatar back pls…
I am the friend who gets a pixie haircut and it looks awful, but you have to say it looks good.

Yeah, but then you got people complaining about P2W ect. I would actually be annoyed if I bought the game and was playing against a bunch of players with a disadvantage. That's not good for anybody

Regardless, the open beta should go a long way. But even that may be tough because it will be hard to show the mid and late gameplay loop in a beta, with presumably 1 level

Art look like it was randomly generated with missing texture assets. Its going to be the game's downfall.
Tbf since the old skool whiners wanted it to stay true to the original(s), it seems they tried to somewhat stick to the pixelated-art from back then.

Sometimes you gotta be careful what you wish for.

Nope, it's distinctive and highly stylized. Clean with high performance and visual clarity. Perfect for a competitive tactical PvP game

It's going to be something that fans of the game look fondly of as the seasons progress.

Video goes in depth on lots of topics. Praises how intricate and organic the environments are, that have structures with real industrial purpose that feed into mission design

Speaking of missions, they are multi-tiered wild goose hunt affairs filled with Easter eggs that eventually culminate into boss battles

The game has its own lore codex with a marathon OG based hud that is apparently really well done, lore is obtained in game through extractions and read out of game in the codex

Gameplay is slower than Destiny and closer to classical halo and is not intended as a movement shooter.

One of the complaints of Destiny PvP is how unbalanced and chaotic it is. This game has tons of devs from the original Halo games who loved that series PvP and are trying to bring back that sort of competitive and balanced feel

Certain weapons are classic Halo archetypes. There's a Needler gun, there's a plasma pistol, there's a way to upgrade a basic pistol with long range to make it like Halo 1's OG pistol

In depth discussion of the Ship map. Guy says that it's the factor that defines Marathon and pushes the bar on what an extraction can feel like. He played the ship map a year ago and back then it blew his mind and he couldn't stop wanting to play it again. Says the concept has such massive potential and hopes it continues on in subsequent seasons

Other things we know - Bungie says the extraction success rate is 20%, and some Bungie employees haven't even been able to extract at all yet.

End game looking strong for this one, has me excited

Also, he says the various Factions are basically like a single player campaign and there's some really sick cinematics for each of them that introduces more lore

Guess they're saving the 4th map reveal closer to launch after open beta or something (it's probably not even finished yet to be honest).

I definitely like hearing (and seeing) this. One of the few scenes that was memorable to me about the gameplay reveal was watching Dr Lupo jump jet around that big crate and two shotting a player with that shotgun.

It was memorable to me because I f***ing hated it. I'm not going to be a Dr Lupo type player, I'm going to be the guy bandaging up like an idiot behind a crate, lol.

I have been seeing a lot of other players gameplay and the pace is way slower than the Dr Lupo gameplay.

I'd be curious to hear from PC gamers perspectives on the following...

"Gameplay reveals should be done with controller, rather than twitchy KBM."

I feel like the spastic, overly twitchy gameplay perspective of high skill players is unappealing to most people. Are there any people who disagree?

I can't quite picture this. The end game seems to be a puzzle / raid on Map 4.

So I assume that most of Map 4 is a big (high quality) Extraction map with lots of PvP. But somewhere on this map we're going to have to solve a puzzle to open a door...which leads us to a PvE raid? The raid will likely be relatively short (Bungie wants to make a new one every 3 months) and highly difficult so our gear goes into the incinerator which will help loot economy. They probably want us taking a crack at this raid X number of times until we beat it?

Is this what you're picturing too?

I don't think it's going to be short.

It sounds to me like the ship contains a ton of secrets and you're involved in solving raid like puzzles to uncover new areas in the ship that lead to new loot to extract.

The ship may be so massive that you won't unlock all of it for season 1

In other words, the ship is an ever evolving map that gets further explored as the seasons progress, with new raids added over time

Just got back from the official reddit. Everyone over there is salty because of the game's reception and trying to blame "Asmongold watchers" for calling the game "woke."

I'm an Asmongold watcher. There are PLENTY of games that suck because they are woke. This isn't one of them.

This game ostensibly(you're welcome) sucks for an entirely different reason and a large quantity of different political views hate this game with no woke needed.

I'm not gonna let reddit piss me off, but.......I let reddit piss me off. I don't even hate this game but game loving me haters are frustrating to converse with, lol.

I feel like the anti-woke dislikers are way worse than the anti-woke(bae) or the woke lately. To be clear, in the previous sentence anti-woke dislikers love the woke and hate the anti-woke.

The 4th map sounds like the real hook and selling factor that should've been part of this entire media blow out. The only issue is that 1. it isn't complete and we won't see it until after launch, and 2. it's going to take a lot grinding and high tier resources to get to that stage in the game. I'd imagine that the map would be much smaller than the others too.

You suck if you watch assmomgold. His takes are trash, he isn't funny, and his schtick is nothing but clickbait

It's a weird thing.

The puzzles I'm picturing are annoying. Like I'll just YouTube the solution because I've never liked puzzles in games. Feels diametrically opposed to repeatable PvP but...maybe the puzzle is different than I'm picturing?

Have you ever played a Destiny raid?

Not so much puzzles but really intense coordination

Now instead of just PvE….you have PVPVE in the mix to contend with and a timer

This was my most anticipated game of the year. I watched the announcement trailer 100s of times. Unfortunately, the gameplay reveal cooled my excitement quite substantially. Not next-gen, not even current-gen graphics, small static maps, and too much of a hero-shooter element with supposedly toned-down player customization - all that was disappointing. Even the "Graphic Realism" visuals were toned down according to the art director, and it was my favorite part of the game's visuals.
I'm starting to get around a bit. I'll give an open beta a chance. But I'm really bummed.

Didn't get that at all, are we watching the same footage?
I mean, if you think I'm wrong, I doubt I can say anything to change your mind - it looks like we are wearing different glasses. I think, my points were obvious. Add duffle bags instead of dead bodies, almost cell-shaded stylized characters, etc. It looks like Apex+Valorant+some mobile shooter smooshed together. The contrast between beautiful and brutal reveal+"Save The Date"+cinematic short trailers and the actual game is ridiculous.
As I said, I'm starting to cool off in my disappointment. I'll give it a chance.

I've never played them. They always sounded fun. The only Destiny content I played were the standard campaigns and those never really worked for me.

I like that concept for Marathons end game though part of me is like..."But PvP bro"

Raids are the main point of Destiny imho. It's the reason you grind everything else in the game in order to get the best loot from the inevitable raid.

Marathon's Raid could be absolutely spectacular on the ship.

Think about it --- the ship is extremely long and pierces through a freaking moon. So much potential here. Think of it almost like a gauntlet challenge where Crews face off eachother with a time limit starting at one end of the ship. They then have to fight over territory as they make it to the opposite end of the ship where the magical loot resides. Not all crews will make it this far. Once you grab the loot, you then have to run it back to the start and still contend with competing PVP battles where they can steal the loot from you, until one Crew is the final one at the extraction zone.

Think of it almost like an obstacle challenge with some coordinating puzzles to unlock doors, perhaps even some platforming challenges, in addition to combat with enemy characters and bosss.

The visual design is so much better than Apex or Valorant, I don't know what to tell you. It's a clear step up. The game looks clean, but also very detailed with great lighting and effects. Some of this is muddied by low quality capture footage, but the 4K footage looks stunning for an MP game. Pretties MP game I've seen, in fact. The reveal was CGI, but the actual game does a great job of capturing that aesthetic.

I hope you're right. I remain doubtful though.

Hmmm not getting my juices flowing if I'm honest, doesn't exactly sound like either a raid nor "never been done before"

Really hope they don't do down the Destiny route with the mechanic's. I really enjoyed the earlier raids but the "mechanic creep" (for want of a better term) was a right turn off for me and made the later D2 raids near impenetrable.

I'm in the minority. I dig the aesthetic. It could be higher fidelity (texture work) like the trailers though.

The heroes killed any interest I had in the game.
They should have lived off the gunplay, loadout and gear.
Cooldowns/heroes create a certain playstyle I don't want to see in an extraction shooter. Even if you lose all your gear you still have these crutch abilities to lean on. Bleh.

These abilities would be more interesting as loadout items that cost gear space and had charges attached to them. Maybe 1 - 3 charges, again 3 costs more gear space than 1.
More interesting resource management that way for the 25 min raid.

You could use all 3 charges early on if you become careless and engage in gunfights.
Spamming them would also cause overheat and reduce the time activated for each subsequent charge. (maybe some high level loot attachment could mitigate some overheat)
Need 3 shield spams to get out of a high loot situation? It will cost you but the option is there.

There was a chance for this to have a unique identity. Looks like Apex Extraction to me.
Will still give it a try but I am disappointed to see it's a mash of other games before it.

Yup characters with specific abilities killed it for me as well, super lame and yes it looks more like a BR Apex style than an extraction shooter.

It's also way to quick imo, so there is no fear or anything. You're just zipping through these enviroments.

A shitty raid doesn't sound great either, collecting keys to get to the next room where you kill more PVE enemies? Bruh.. Lame ass design.

I thought The "Marathon" ship would be a huge extraction map with verticality etc but I doubt it if you're going from room to room to clear PVE enemies

I was hoping for it to feel like I was moving through the jungle in Predator (Arnie movie)
That dangerous stillness, being stalked, heat from the sun on your back. That feeling.
People are sliding and zipping all over the place.

The dynamic weather is interesting as well.
On the alien planet maybe on clear days the sun becomes unbearably hot causing heat damage. You have to go inside or under trees for cover or have equipped gear to stay outside.
Ice storms, wind tunnels.
Even if you are a stack of 3 sweats and that Sun exposes itself you have to retreat inside.
A newb who has heat cloak gets to scavenge in relative safety while the otheres are stuck inside killing each other.

Maybe a weather report displayed before dropping in. 35% chance of High Sun / 90% chance of Acid Rain.

Would create cool identities when you think about load outs.
Scavengers, hit squads, high loot hogs.
Risk / Reward
Choices / Consequences

Have you ever played a Destiny raid?
Just watched the Deep Stone Crypt raid, which is supposedly one of Destiny's better raids.

That's cool, and makes sense in the context of a PvE based game like Destiny, but I hope to God we're not getting something like that for Marathon.

This genre is like a bowl of rice pudding. The PvP is the rice pudding and the PvE is the healthy topping of cinnamon that brings everything together. This whole "shoot AI bots in a room until they drop a key card and then go open a door to another room filled with AI bots..."

I'm 99% certain that what I'm picturing isn't Marathons end game, but mother of God if it is...

For a game where the PR team and the director keep going on about leaving the match with a good story, not having proximity chat is a huge fucking miss. It also baffles me that, knowing this game will have puzzles and hidden secrets to uncover, they won't allow the community to engage with each other more within the game itself through a feature like proximity chat. Dumb choice. No excuses.
Can anyone tell me where proxy chat would fit in this game? There doesn't seem to be many safe area pockets that lead to entertaining proxy chat moments. Everything looks way too quick which is just going to lead to CoD tier proxy chat. It makes no sense in this game.

That first map they showed is roughly 1km x 0.6km and they put the chances of PVP encounters at 60% so I don't think it plays as fast as they want you to believe (for some reason).

If I'm correct on the above then proxy chat would have its place. I think most of the play testers said it was needed also.
