David Gibson, an analyst with MST Financial, has stated on social media that the price of the PS5 could rise to US$ 999+.

David Gibson came to this conclusion by pointing out that China accounts for more than 90% of PS5 production. By way of comparison, China only accounts for 10% of Switch 2 production.

This is as expected…they can afford the risk of tariffs because of Vietnam production and COGS lower than the market realizes. But Sony has 90%+ from China and price is likely to rise to $999+ while Switch 2 at $449

PS5 price may rise to $999+, says analystHowever, Sony may end up being forced to raise prices in the American market as well. Even so, the company is expected to avoid further increases until the PlayStation 6.

$1000 Feels very pessimistic to me.

Almost certain we will see Sony hike the price of some stuff tho, Totoki is all about them margins and there's no way he'll eat tariffs.

It's just a question of math and if we actually get stuck with this completely insane policy. $1000 is an extreme lowball estimate if the tariff is +200%. The only optimistic stance here is assuming that the policies are so bad they will collapse before truly taking effect.

Sony would have to ship all PS5 units back to Japan to export from there only eating the shipping+24% tariff hike.

Or ship from China to the US for 145% import fee.

Also OP, switch is mostly being make in Vietnam which is only at a 10%

I could also win the lottery. There will be a new trade deal in place far before Sony starts selling ps5s at $999.
It just came out that the treasury secretary's own staff arranged for him to have a meeting across the street, then rushed to the oval office to try and convince Trump of the 90 day pause and he then tweeted it out from his phone. They are that disorganized at the moment. They just met with Japan to discuss trade this week and it went absolutely horribly if you saw the reports, to the point that the US delegation literally couldn't even answer basic questions about what they wanted in the negotiation. They literally don't even know.

This would make consoles more and more niche, reducing the market size.
Companies can't think only in short term gains, sacrificing their own future business model.

Will be interesting to see wheather this affects all gaming related products the same or if we'll see a shift in the price ratio between the different platforms including PC in the next five years or so.

I never knew my PS5 would end up being an investment
I may end up selling it for more than I originally bought it for once the PS6 comes out lol

Sony would eat short term losses and find a manufacturing alternative before they more than doubled the price of their console. That would kill console sales and make it very difficult to succeed next gen.

Moronic take from an out of touch analyst.

Another fear mongering but Sony made a big mistake to invest heavily to China, a country with a government that skirts world trade laws and has allot of labor abuse and malpractice. They could have made investment to other Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and other Asian countries. Well there is still time to transfer business to other Asian countries and also build factories in USA to get tax incentives and exemptions.

bunch of stable geniuses over there :messenger_tears_of_joy:

it's like someone wanted to test what would happen if the collective conscience of twitter converged on a human and somehow they were elected president of the US...

Or they should build a plant in Mexico and distribute it there.

Trump is already talking about lowering those tariffs. This is going nowhere lol.
Electronic goods import were exempted from tariffs. This analyst needs to read some news.
Believe there is a separate tariff tier for electronics (semi conductors, chips etc) that will affect consoles, phones, pc's etc in the distant future that hasn't taken place yet, along with a pharmacutical tier tariff as well.
