Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

I love all the characters but Lune is legit my favorite. From her calculated attitude, dedication to the mission, to her design, animations in combat and expressions. She's a fucking badass and super hot too.

I just finished Act 1 HOLY SHIT.
Yea and fuck that boss. Had to stop and grind a few levels. You can tell when your under leveled because one fight levels you up like over halfway. Once I did that got the parry down and dominated then had my mind blown.

Going to start the game. PC port is weird, resolutions goes from low to ultra instead of letting you pick a resolution. What's up with that? :goog_relieved:

Main menu music reminds me a lot of Nier. Hope they keep that vibe through the game, love that stuff.

Really? Could've sworn I was able to choose the actual resolution. But the weird thing was it defaulted to borderless windowed mode + locked at 4096x2160. I had to set it to fullscreen mode to change it to 3840x2160 (my native resolution)

I have one issue – new characters that join should be at the same level as the rest. I don't see the point in picking them if they're 10 levels lower. I'm not going to waste time leveling them up.

I swear not only does Square Enix have big shoes to fill for their next numbered FF game, but even Atlus now has to step up their game. And I'm not just talking about the battle system. It's also the writing, dialogue, character interactions, environments, the whole package. This is literally the "j"rpg I've been waiting for, for like 20 years. This is where I always wanted the genre to go and we're finally here.

So much respect to these devs, they made a dream a reality.

Yeah, I think this is the main menu song they're using (it's also the same one that plays when you idle on the game's icon on the PS5 dashboard):

And like with some of the Nier songs, the vocalist is singing in a fictional language (mix of different languages and dialects).

Here are the lyrics (for anyone curious):

Kasoi dalé u
Moi dané
Goséi dané
Kala soika tovla
Goséi moéto

Maella itade nai
Dosokémo naémai
Alicia itade nai
Verso édaéké
Lune ai

Kasoi déléu
Moi dané
Goséi dané
Kala soika tovla
Goséi moéto

Maella itade nai
Dosokémo naémai
Alicia itade nai
Verso édaéké
Lune ai

Edit: I would be very surprised if it won't get nominated for the best music category at this year's TGA.

This is probably my favorite track so far and that bass line is just so reminiscent of old SMT. Fucking love it.
What I like about this track is that by the time it gets to the trance portion you are learning the boss mechanics and you start dodging and parrying more and more. It's an amazing feeling.

It's over

Made by Fortiche? Pwetty pls? 🙏🏻🥹
I actually checked this a short while ago since I was listening to a podcast, and they mentioned that the game has already been picked up for a movie deal. They've confirmed it's going to be a live action adaptation, with the rights being with this new media production company named Story Kitchen, which was set up by the producer of Sonic the Hedgehog a few years back.

You can read more about about it here on their website: https://www.story-kitchen.com/news/...works-from-story-kitchen-sandfall-interactive

Wait a minute, no shader compilation at the beginning and nobody is reporting stutter fest?

Cbs What GIF by The Late Late Show with James Corden

what stutter fest ? game runs great

That's my question

I just started the game to see performance right off the bat but didn't see shader compilation nor widespread complaints for stutter fest.

Thus the WTF reaction.

Unreal engine 5 without widespread stutters? WTF is going on?

Dare I say they've optimized the game well? That'd be a new one. :goog_relieved:

Epic settings put my PC on fire, but with everything on High it looks almost the same while running very nicely.

edit: 1 weird thing is that the cutscenes run way worse than the main game for me. Had to restore the 30fps lock because it was all over the place otherwise.

In act 1 I set up Gustave as the 4th "non-active" character and added all the solo lumins to him. Feels so badass having him come in solo after a party wipe to clean it up. Tempted to set this on the hardest mode now so I have more reasons to do so.

In act 2 now and I might continue that strategy. Seems fitting... given the circumstances.

Have been playing since yesterday.
Holy shit this game is so good, it's been years since a game surpassed my expectations this much. It's just astonishing that 30 people made this.

I'm still relatively early so my opinion might change later one but so far everything about it is great.
-The story is intriguing, I like the characters and the dialogue is actually good with people that sound like humans unlike the anime cringe we get in most JRPGs (I've always been of the opinion most JRPGs have cool stories but terrible dialogue)
- The world is very beautiful and unique, with strong art direction and unique ideas that sets it apart from the endless wave of generic medieval fantasy
- The music is amazing so far
- The combat is super fun, I've never had my heart pounding in a turn based game before lol. It's not really QTE combat either like some people say, yeah the attacks use QTEs but the evades and parries requiere the same type of reactions and observation than a proper action game. Not only that but all party members feel very unique and their individual mechanics are fun.
- The exploration is rewarding, yeah the locations are fairly linear but they make it worthwhile to always explore them fully. I really like how, so far, everything you find in the world feels useful. Be it new weapons, new passive abilities, money that's actually useful or upgrade materials that actually make a difference. It's not "here's your 800th crafting material you have no use for" or " here's some money but we forgot to put useful stuff for you to buy in the game" like so many other JRPGs.

It runs pretty well on ps5 too. The IQ in performance mode isn't great (the hair in particular looks bad), but it still looks very nice and runs flawlessly so far.

Cross posting this thread for anyone that needs help playing on Expert with ease!

Great info, think I'll go ahead and respec.

I take it going this route negates all level scaling and makes it irrelevant right?

What about the luck stat? Does that not have an impact since it could make you hit even harder provided you crit?

Yep! Crit is next in the agenda!

Lately I've been almost completely avoiding healing, just revive with the consumables when need be. When those run out, solo with the 4th character. The parry/dodge mechanic feels so liberating. I'm tempted to do a complete solo play through at some point.

How is this game not full price lol, the level of production is up there with the best.

It's crazy how JRPGs actually regressed in narrative maturity and quality from approximately the PS2 generation to now. I just don't understand what Japanese game devs were doing, they had cultivated an entire generation of gamers worldwide who loved this genre and they simply refused to cater to them for two decades.

Isn't it solved using a one man army? With the 100% critical hability if you have only one character in the party?

I find it easier to play focusing in just one character... and getting 1AP every time you block... starting with 7AP

The talent left a long time ago. It's why if you want old Square RPG you stick with Monolithsoft. Closest we will get. I feel like Clair Obscur is the second coming of a Renaissance with RPGs. It has everything that a 90s Square RPG featured that gamers loved.

Unfortunately I don't think the big name devs will listen because they are too restricted to make "safe" games that will make "money".

30 hours played over the weekend. I had to force myself to stop. I need to rest some so I can absorb the game fully.

I guess there was some talent at Ubisoft after all.
Ubisoft always had some real talent. I suspect a bunch of Child of Light devs worked on this. It's a shame they stopped making those smaller, experimenting games. Now they're all just AC studios.

I'm not the biggest fan of that game, the poem like dialogue kinda got it my nerves.

This game in other hand is fucking amazing.

I'm about ten hours in (just got the fifth party member). I'm a little mixed on the combat, but I think it mostly has to do with the UI and how it shifts the QTE prompts around the screen which is killing the readability for me. It really makes me miss the Judgement Ring from Shadow Hearts. I'm not the biggest fan of the enemy or NPC designs either though I do enjoy whipping up on the occasional mime. Some of the traversal stuff feels a bit unnecessary and would have been better served by just adding more grapple points. And after a really strong narrative start, it feels like it meanders a bit too much. It's easy to see why people like this game though as most of my complaints are minor. The premise hooks you right away and the character performances are some of the best in gaming. Some of the overworld/town music is a bit of a letdown compared to the rest of what is on offer, but it would be difficult to maintain the high bar the game sets as early as the opening start screen.

I think even Monolith has declined in narrative quality over the years. Xenogears and Xenosaga are much stronger in this respect than Xenoblade 1, which is itself much stronger than Xenoblade 2-3.

Looking forward to playing this. I have it but don't play to play for a little bit. It's giving me Lost Odyssey vibes which is one of my favorite games.

I get what you're saying about the meandering, but it has purpose. Keep going and you'll see. :)

Game is french, so the voice acting should be french, right?

Context: Yakuza/Ninja Gaiden= japanese voice acting

Really? Could've sworn I was able to choose the actual resolution. But the weird thing was it defaulted to borderless windowed mode + locked at 4096x2160. I had to set it to fullscreen mode to change it to 3840x2160 (my native resolution)
I left it on borderless fullscreen hoping the resolution number is just a mistake. I guess I need to change it to exclusive fullscreen to see if I get better performance.

The way commands are set up is just perfection. The way you can execute commands basically instantly, I could see with enough practice and muscle memory you could totally play this like an action game.

Especially so since you can really just customize nearly every type of stat and reaction given the insane amount of latent traits you can equip. Each character has its own nuances which just expands it even further.

If anything I REALLY want like a time trials or boss rush mode (with maybe some leaderboards).
