Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ≼| OT |≽ La Belle Fantaisie

Just rolled credits.

Not an 8/10.

Not a 9/10.

Not a 10/10.

33/10. Game may go down as my favorite game I've ever played in my life.

Simply a fucking masterpiece.

Keep going mate
My theory is that somehow the members of Expedition Zero were painted by the paintress or someone that has the same power ( dont know why ), which is why they are immortal. Could it be that Gustave will be painted by her as well? The ending of the first act really caught me by surprise, amazing game/SPOILER]

nice theory but no 😂 enjoy the journey

Can you name them?
double burn
and another picto i don't remember the name of, but what is does is that it keeps burn stacks for more turns so I have more time stacking then!

Also, my weapon I'm using is double burn from offensive stance (and 50% increased burn damage).

Yeah. Gestral Beach was designed by a sadist.
The team trying to awkwardly insert a platforming section into their JRPG without knowing the first thing about platforming is kind of painfully evident in that area

I got through it and never want to think about it again. Too bad it's the only way to get Lune's swimsuit

Thx bro, can't wait to enhance my builds.

I've fallen way behind everyone else. My son and I said we would prestige Space Marine 2 so I'm sticking to that. I've played some E33 and love what I've played, but man.....reading the comments, I can tell there is some depth in this game that I haven't scratched the surface on. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to immerse myself in this one.
Take your time man, this game will be still be great when you get to it. This is definitely the kind of game I could see myself replaying on the regular.

Voices are mixed way too low during cutscenes and during combat. I had to turn subtitles on just to know what anyone is saying during cutscenes

They sound fine when talking to NPCs in the world

The team should probably patch that to improve sound balance during those parts of the game

the lack of a real mini-map kind of kills me, but also does force me to actually pay attention to where i'm going and keeping an eye out for side tunnels

I did not complete a diabolical parkour for a swimsuit???

Absolutely
I see. Thanks. Well beating Raven and Elder Naytiba is such a epic dance of parry and dodging for me especially in hard mode both the game and boss battle mode. So now Im well prepared for Obscur 33 once I get it. 😁

Well you are still in a much better situation. This year is jampack with great games. Im still finishing Death stranding director cut for ps5 which Im enjoying. Then I will buy Doom Dark ages and Death stranding 2 at launch for sure, thats is already set, funds ready. And I will purchase Obsur 33 and Indiana Jones with my extra budget later. And I might purchase, Silent Hill F if its this year, mgS 3 remake and Ninja gaiden 4 this year. Then bigger problem if GTA6 is this year, Im oblige to really get that one. A good problen to have. Now I really have to properly set a schedule on my playthrough of all this games. 😁

Im going to respec everything into full might and agilty and commit to the glass cannon builds. I currently have no agility on anyone and I have to watch the enemies get multiple consecutive turns lol

They just introduced a mikiri counter mechanic in this game. GOTY.

jCMcwmn.gif

Just played a boss fight thats pure souls. Literally 7 consecutive dodges followed by jump attacks and mikiri counters. Chefs Kiss. I could literally kiss the devs.

i think im going to reload the save and play that boss fight again because i went in with ice attacks for a previous boss and had to basically heal myself through it so it felt like cheating.

They should add a some kind of colloseum arena roguelike mode with only battles after battles after you finish the game.

Every RPG system and combat mechanic in this game is completely superficial.

- You can try and set up flowcharts to win battles marginally faster, but it's really irrelevant. You just learn the attack animations and then parry and win.
Who cares what kind of damage I'm dealing this turn? On the opponent's turn there is going to be a parry that is going to matter way more anyway, might as well just mash attack and get to it faster instead of needlessly planning out a flowchart.

- Why doesn't the game just automate the picto system? Obviously whenever you get a new one you are just going to replace any learned ones, what is even the point of making the player go through the motions in the menu over and over again?

- Is there ever a time when you get a new weapon that you wouldn't want to just immediately use it? I guess depending on your stats your scaling could make it do less damage then the one you currently have, but that hasn't happened for me yet. They may as well have just made each character have one weapon that gets upgraded as you go on. Why make the player go through and equip the newest weapon each time if there is no reason to not use the newest one?

I really think a lot of the hype for this game just comes from people who haven't played a lot of JRPGs being drawn in by the lack of anime art style. What's funny though is that the cutscenes are somehow even more dramatic than many Japanese RPGs 😂

So far the only thing hitting for me is the music, great soundtrack.

I can tell you haven't got very far in the game.

Where should I play up to then to where you think my points don't stand? I hope you are right and that as the game goes on the choices I am making actually become interesting. Another instance is upgrading your Tints. Why not just do that automatically when you get the upgrade item? There is no tradeoff, so it should just be automated. The game has this kind of thoughtless task all over its design.

I currently have three party members.

I feel like it doesn't really have depth, but it feels like it when you 30+ skills per character and 50+ pictos.

Just finished Act 2, wooowie. 32 hours on the clock. Really happy with the game so far, definitely one of the best turn based systems I've played.

I'm surprised certain side content wasn't part of the main campaign. Full cut scenes, epic bosses, and some real major lore info drops that put the characters and story into a bigger perspective.

One in particular shouldn't have been cut to missable side content in particular.

Just finished the gestral villiag

The cut-scene at camp afterwards is both creepy and fascinating. I am really intrigued by the story. More so than any other RPG in a long time, because I really don't know where they are going with it. Even BG3, as much as I enjoyed the game, had a pretty generic plot that I always had a good idea where everything was headed.

A lot of people enjoying this game are people that primarily play JRPG's.

The problem with modern JRPG's storytelling isn't simply that they are dramatic or melodramatic. JRPG's didn't invent that type of storytelling.

The problem is they treat you like a dumb child with their storytelling.

I'm not the biggest anime guy, but my favorite anime movies that are aimed at kids don't even do that.

I play a lot of JRPG's and most of their storytelling just isn't good at all compared to this.

Metaphor repeat the same info over and over, it doesn't know how to get to the point.
Yakuza... 30 min long cutscenes.. Dreadful pacing
Rebirth just felt cringe.
Someone said it earlier but even the recent xenoblade games aren't anywhere near as good as the first story wise. Yet alone the old monolith games.

I'm not Stephen King, but I'm pretty big into writing/storytelling. It's just so clear that the writers for this game know what they are doing.. The others, it feels like their primary goal is to drag shit out to dumb kids.

The characters move, talk, feel somewhat believably despite the melodrama and goofy moments.

The dialouge in this game in general is among the best I've seen in the medium

These parries feel so satisfying when timed correctly. Not even Soulsborne come close to it, it makes every fight a little challenging just to get the timing right. Reminds me a lot of Sea of Stars.

But I'm still trying to figuren out what how Pictos and Lummnas work together. As I understood, Pictos can be levelled up, but only some, not all of them. For example Didger can't be levelled up, or how do I see its level up progress? I read something about succeeding 4 battles then it'll level up, but why's it still at Level 1?

And some Pictos give Luminas automatically, other Luminas are independent of any Pictos, am I right?

Equiping a Picto give you a special buff along with the stat boosts. Win a battle with a Picto equipped levels 4 times (that's the level up progress you see) and you unlock it so you can equip it by spending Lumina points without having it equipped physically. Lumina points work as a pool that limits how many unlocked Pictos can be equipped on each character since each Picto has a lumina cost associated with it. You can increase the Lumina pool total for each character by leveling up (they gain them at level up) and also spending special Lumina currency to add additional Lumina points to the character.

I don't have Gamepass (and never will) and I picked this up without playing turn based games before. It's quickly become one of my fav games of all time. I don't need a rental service to help me decide whether a game is worth it or not. Demo's used to suffice in that area and they were for FREE!
This is a special case, the game has an opening that does not reflect the rest of the game. It's possible to play this for an hour and thinking it's a pure eurojank RPG.

I think it's one of the reasons people like it so much, it catches people off guard when you get to the island.

You never played a turn based game before?

That stone face boss was interesting. You are not suppose to beat it, you just suppose to survive until 12 turns.

When first fought him I thought. he just doesn't stop!

Continue to be in awe of the art and environmental design, these two story missions in Act 2 are nothing short of jaw-dropping, the wonder and amazement I felt in the first couple of hours has only gotten stronger in my 32nd hour, amazing stuff 👏🏻

I'm ten hours in and the combat is getting a little tedious for me with all the dodging and parrying. I've just come off playing elden ring for 200 hours and can't be bothered to be super alert lol. Think I'm gonna put it on story and play relaxed as I'm enjoying the story, graphics and music so much.

Does someone know how this AA title is putting out this level of visuals and audio presentation.

But SE has to blow either hundreds of millions to get decent presentation. Or put in pixel graphics (OT2) for a low budget title that looks abysmal.

In fact, in general JRPGs dont touch this, regardless of budget.

Finished the Endless Tower. The final boss was amazing. Lvl 91 now and it's very difficult to level up. There's a trophy for lvl 99 smh.
