She's been famous for a long time and has enough money to live multiple lifetimes comfortably. If she were actually upset and not just seeking even more attention she could retire from public life and never have to deal with public criticism ever again.

She ran her own aviation company before she ever met Bezos so she belongs there more than the others really. And just the same as Melinda Gates she spends a lot of her time spending her husband's money. Which is all philanthropy is really to these people.

Feel a little bad for Katy, I think what happened was there was a massive buildup of resentment towards all the girlbossing force fed to everyone in all aspects of media, so this was the dam bursting wide open and being funneled entirely to her and the others. Ya you can point to them having no self-awareness but it got as much negativity as someone doing something that was actually despicable or evil.

We even have an A/B test case. Bill Shatner was on the same flight two years ago and it was universally positive.

to be fair, these are radically different celebrity choices:

An actor who was at the center of our culture's popular vision of space exploration for most of the past century--ever since his series debuted at the height of the space race; a show that has been cited now by several generations of NASA prospects, physicists, etc as their inspiration for joining their profession;

vs

"All female" flight with air-headed pop stars who have no relationship to space travel or science at all.

not to mention that Shatner genuinely looked like being up there awed him, where Katy and crew floated and made TikTok skits and selfies for Instagram.

It's one of those scenarios where it was so feminist and try-hard that they ended up being an exact stereotype.

Again, one of the biggest marketing stunts gone wrong that we've had in a while.
