The games press will not be receiving Nintendo Switch 2 consoles until just before it comes out, The Game Business has learned.

Some media have even been warned they will not have their machine until launch day. Nintendo has told journalists that this is due to the requirement of a significant day one patch.

"It's really frustrating," said one editor. "We will need to cover Switch 2 while also working across Summer Game Fest. How are we supposed to do that?"

Another added: "Anyone who can get hold of a console early from a dodgy retailer will have a head start in terms of coverage. I know the console will be sold out at launch, but what about all the other games?"

That will really suck for third party games at launch, because I assume Nintendo's own games (and obviously the system itself) are basically review proof, at least at launch

This has to be pretty unprecedented right?

L LakeOf9 definitely bad for 3rd party games, because people were primarily going to buy for Mario Kart anyways, maybe one other game, and now they'll make it a Nintendo game more than likely. Especially because those will be better reviewed early.

Any other company would get torched for this.

The system UI looks identical to the Switch 1. The whole thing looks like Switch 1. One of the most uninteresting launches for a system ever. Every 3rd party game already is out on other systems with reviews.

I'm basically just going to tinker around with Mario Kart a bit until Donkey Kong, which I do have very high expectations for. Welcome Tour doesn't really even deserve a review.

I never expected to have a review of something, I always assumed we all would have info when the console comes out, I'm probably too used to Nintendo lol

So identical to the Xbox Series launch then. And reviewers had those a few months before launch.

Dear Nintendo,

This strategy of withholding Switch 2 consoles until the eleventh hour is a strategic misstep. Denying major media outlets timely access guarantees a chaotic information vacuum filled with unreliable sources ultimately harming potential customers who need informed decisions. Expect a fragmented early narrative.

So new in box in the future means dead in box?

Console and game preservation is completely wrecked.

An utter disgrace.

The problem is that the media needs the consoles more than Nintendo needs the media.

They're already sold out. They'd possibly prefer a push after launch once they're fully restocked when people who hadn't already put their name down months in advance can buy one.

I can well imagine that if Nintendo had stock to sell that they'd work out a way to give early access with caveats about patches or whatever else.

Exactly, having a Switch 2 on their Youtube channel day 1 = Lots of Clicks… They are not going to miss those clicks, that's for sure.

Lol, The Switch 2 is almost sold out already, and big gaming sites are probably going to buy it for reviews… Still fail to see the issue.
What other people did with their money already doesn't affect my desire to buy it. Knowing well what I am buying does.

Can't properly see, don't care about multiplatform games with PC, plus not "final product" as stated in the screen.

If you haven't already pre-ordered one, then chances are extremely slim that you'll even have the opportunity to buy one at launch. In which case, there will be plenty of reviews online by then from a myriad of sources to help you make an informed purchasing decision.

So… You buy video games based on reviews? That's weird… I buy almost every console on day 1… Consoles reviews are pointless too.

It's almost as if Nintendo would rather sell them than just give them away for nothing. Media who want it day one can fucking buy one.

Sold out*

You do realize that if Nintendo sold to all their core customers, the console would be considered a catastrophic failure? Those reviews aren't for us. It's for the mass market.

So you are assuming that outside the Nintendo fans bubble nobody knows about the Switch 2 and gaming sites are going to fix that? 😂 What year is this 2001?

How often do we even see Switch 1 native handheld footage? Is it a thing? Of course if it was it would require some special customized Switch to grab the feed.
