Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

You have a long history of having idiotic opinions about graphics and technology, its not something to brag about.
OMG lol... dead.jpg

I honestly can't believe people aren't impressed by Death Stranding 2. It's literally the most "next gen" game we've gotten so far (crazy vistas, amazing character models, great lighting (that doesn't need RTGI to look amazing), evolved gameplay using physics simulations).

Some people in this thread will simply never be happy with any current or upcoming game... they're beyond help. I expect Slimy to rebuy a PS5 Pro for DS2 then totally change his mind and proceed glaze it on here with tons of screenshots instead of the obviously low quality screenshots and twitter clips he's using to bad mouth it at the moment LMAO.

Bruh, he was talking about not having better RT at Sony because of resolution and you went on your 30 vs 60 crusade again.
its not just resolution, its high resolution 60 fps. every next gen game so far has had a 60 fps mode. Avatar, Silent Hill 2, Outlaws, Jedi Survivor. They all drop to 720p. Meanwhile sony games have mostly been targeting 1440p 60 fps. the pixel budget for such a high resolution mode is 3x higher than the 720p 60 fps modes we see in other games. thats 3-4x the power wasted on rendering pixels than ray traced effects.

Spiderman 2 is the only PS5 first party game thats 60 fps and that drops to 1080p. Had they added RTGI, it would be dropping to 720-864p.

That said, we do not yet know for sure the resolution targets of DS2. We shall see come launch if RTGI and virtualized geometry support is in. So we are all just assuming here based on the developers comments and the past history of first party games on PS5.

Honestly, i couldnt care less if a game has RTGI or not. Doom and Indy have RTGI and they look last gen as fuck. Alan Wake 2 and Callisto dont have RTGI or even software based realtime GI and they look next gen. I just want them to push visual fidelity one way or another. This UE4 Rebirth trailer came out before DS1 and i always wished DS2 would look like this.

Shame that Amy Henning is skipping State of Unreal again. I wonder where that game is. Or what that game is lol

I think Witcher 4 will probably be targeting next gen. It will probably be 1080p 30 fps on base consoles, and target higher resolutions on the PS6 and the next xbox.

I take it you saw that reddit post yesterday I think, Slimy? Apparently CDProjekt have made several major contributions to Unreal which are now experimental in UE5.6. Performance of from-scratch projects has also increased over 50% overnight, going from what would have been otherwise 30 fps all the way up to 50 fps.

This tech presentation is make or break it after the switch to unreal engine...
If what they show is anything less than technical wizardry it means not only witcher 4 but cyberpunk 2 will be technologically lame :messenger_pensive:
Please be good
I dont think their red engine is that great. The NPC behavior in cyberpunk was exceptionally poor at launch. Witcher 3's NPC and ray tracing patch is arguably the worst performing game ive ever played. You literally go from 80 fps to mid 20s as you as you enter a tiny village. All because they increased the NPC count to match the pre-downgraded footage from 12 years ago.

Their ray tracing implementation is all nvidia. It runs poorly on consoles and AMD cards. its way too expensive compared to other ray tracing implementations even on nvidia cards. Likely because it was all done by nvidia engineers just shoehorning in ray tracing support.

They were pretty much the first next gen game and at the forefront of ray tracing back in 2020 so it made people think the engine is amazing, when in fact it had many issues that led to them literally changing the renderer resulting in that massive downgrade back in 2015, and literally $125 million to fix cyberpunk post launch.

UE5 does have its issues though and epic should continue to be called out for it.

Really waited for marvel 1943 to show up there what a shame 😔

I did not. Link please.

They did state that when they announced they are switching to UE5. That they would be doing engine commits instead of just licensing it like other studios do. Similar to kojipro and decima.

One thing I will say is that Epic has been improving hardware lumen performance with every single release. Since launch they have effectively doubled the hardware lumen performance so now it basically performs as well as Software Lumen in UE5.5. CPU performance was improved by 50-80% in UE5.4 which is probably why Expedition 33 doesnt have the same performance issues we saw in Avowed that released on UE5.3 just a few months prior.

Epic's biggest mistake has been not providing devs resourcing to switch to the latest released. Stalker runs like shit because its on UE5.1. Wukong i believe literally runs on 5.0. Nvidia sends out programming teams to implement path tracing while epic with their billions is too busy adding rappers and pop stars to fortnite.

Callisto and Hellblade 2 had this. I know Days Gone got a lot of flack for fade to black back in the day but that was 6 years ago.

Look at all the "Experimental" features.

  1. Seamless Gameplay Transition for Cinematics - This looks straight out of Cyberpunk with seamless transition to cutscenes.

I think Suicide Squad (which has phenomenal looking cutscenes btw) also has seamless transitions.

Edit: kojima had this with MGS4 in 2008 lmao.

This game has absolutely stunning visuals, I would say it is currently the king in the open world genre regarding graphics.
Raytracing implementation is excellent, it looks great through day and night and different seasons.
That foggy river under the rain. Wow.

Water makes games wet, ehm better.

Materials are just so off in GT7, they refuse to bounce the sunlight. either in cars or on track. I dont understand how people dont see that. its so plainly obvious to me. It's like the just absorb the light and ends up looking dull. People then attribute it to looking realistic but it just looks bland.

Even DF missed it when they did the 1 hour long comparison with Forza. Now path traced F1 looks so clearly superior but people still rate GT7 above it. I actually went back and played the free demo again today and i see the same issues. it looks good for a last gen racer, but even on the pro with ray traced reflections, im not seeing the same kind of lighting i do in forza.

Depends on the material of the cars. The F1 cars in the video should have a matte finish that absorbs more sunlight because that is accurate to real life. Several F1 teams moved to matte paint because it weighs less (and has a side effect which their sponsors like where less shininess makes it easier to see their logos on the car).

Both F1 and Forza do many individuals things better than GT7. I don't want to turn this into another GT vs Forza thread. In fact I will go so far as to say that technically speaking, F1 is doing most things better than GT7. But I just can't get over the lack of realism of the colors and how plasticky the trackside materials in F1 look.

At the time of writing this Digital Foundry just posted a breakdown of path tracing in F1 25 and came to some of the same conclusions. Show the game to family members and see if it passes the photorealism sniff test. GT7 (and Forza depending on weather and time of day) are games that can fool people. I don't think anyone is being fooled by F1.

F1 25 path tracing + GT7's LUT + better materials all round would be a goated combination, but with rumors of Codemasters shuttering I don't think we will see such a thing.

Don't forget GT's stunningly accurate sky simulation either, which is extremely important considering sky is occupying half the image.

That green filter in GT7 is bizarre. That's not how real life works.

Not sure I see what you're seeing. The blues are blue, reds are red, i'm not picking up on any excess of green anywhere. F1 on the other hand looks like it's afflicted with a slight yellow filter, also known in the biz as the "piss filter" (but perhaps a more hydrated level of piss compared to Codemasters past efforts like GRID).

To elucidate the point about how important color is, take a look at the GTAV NaturalVision Enhanced mod:

And another unreleased mod from 13 years ago (pretty sure cause the modder died) which I believe was purely changing engine values:

Why are you so aggressive and critical to others opinions? This isn't about impressive, personal taste or being unhappy with everything, it's in the title "I expect", so it's something beyond personal preferences.

Just pure graphical quality, something more than what's already out there, gameplay doesn't matter, how or why, the same, just the end result. Is it a bit shallow?, perhaps, but that's not the point.

Art style and whatnot is subjective, textures, resolution, geometry etc., these are things that can absolutely be judged and/or criticized and there isn't a game that can be excused from this.

Jesus I just read that post. I think people just get too caught up on defending their favorite games, developers and publishers, and miss the forest for the trees. I have literally been naming both DS2 and Ghosts 2 as my most anticipated graphics for months now. Hell, some posters here even called me out for putting it on my most anticipated graphics list. But I am sure i will find it impressive. hell, i found spiderman 2 impressive and I shit on that game all the time because A) the downgraded it and B) they targeted native 4k for some reason.

It's about next gen graphics fidelity, and if we are not critical in this thread then where will can we be? OTs are full of fanboys refusing to accept criticism of anything. Twitter and youtube are full of astroturfers or bot accounts paid for by publishers that drown out all criticism. DF literally calls cross gen games PS5 and XSX masterpieces. Try and post one critical comment on DF's youtube videos then logout and see if its still there. They will automatically hide it for everyone else.

I like that this thread just has higher standards. I have made zero efforts to hide that I had to lower my standards (Matrix was my standard) since around 2023, and now im mostly happy with devs actually pushing tech even if the end results arent Matrix quality. It seems you need 3,000 devs working on one game for 8 years and $2 billion to get that kind of fidelity so i dont give other devs too much crap as long as they try and incorporate these latest technologies. But when I see devs not utilize hardware built into these consoles, something Cerny himself spent an hour focusing on, then I have to wonder why something that took 6 long years with Sony's first party dollars and support did not incorporate them.

Day time didnt fool me, but night time looked legit photorealistic to me. Alex mentioned this in his video. Just a big sunlight light source that lights up the entire world is not going to produce wildly different results when going from raster to path tracing, but add some dynamic lights and indirectly lit areas and you will see a generational difference. Which is probably why night time looks so amazing.

8 years ago when GT sports came out, yes, it looked a generation ahead of Forza 7 because of color grading and materials. Now? I am just not seeing it. The latest game looks incredibly dated. I dont really look at the sky. I do look at the trackside detail which is lacking. The weather effects which are lacking. The bizarre day time lighting which is lacking.

And yes, GT7 with next gen lighting will look better than both Forza and F1. I just think that right now, i can clearly see the difference despite the color grading. They dont even need full RTGI for this, i think a better baked lighting model would do. They are still using last gen materials and textures. I am a big GT guy and ive always loved their color grading over Forza, but FM8 was the first time i was like wait a second, i dont really mind this.

For what it's worth night time is always easier to achieve realism even with pure rasterization. We already had extremely convincing results in Need for Speed 2015. Probably because when a lot of the color is taken out of the equation, it's easier to get the grading right. Even budget games are able to pull it off well eg. the Tokyo Xtreme Racer game released this year. Both NFS2015 and TXR fall apart when you use one of the day time mods.

Even back on the PS1 days it was night tracks that reigned supreme:

  • So PS State of Play in a couple of days. Probably Thursday.
  • RE9 is being revealed there.
  • James Bond reveal by Hitman dev this Friday.
  • Unreal Fest Tomorrow.
  • Summer Games Show this Friday.
  • MS Game show on Sunday
It will be interesting to see who manages to impress like GTA6 did a few weeks ago. My money is on Witcher 4 but its a next gen game.

Sony should have RE9 which will be RE Engine's last chance at redemption. I am hopeful. They had RTGI already in back in dragons Dogma 2, they just need to up the asset quality.
Apparently, Solas by Housemarque is rumored to be there. It should be on UE5, but the first game wasn't a looker outside of the first two levels.
No rumors whatsoever about Intergallactic despite Neil saying we should see it soon 6 months ago. Another disappointing E3 from Sony coming up.
Same goes for Wolverine but I suppose anything is possible.
Fable has been at the MS show for the last two years. Should be there again. This is going to be fun to compare against Witcher 4.
Gears Reboot should be there. Its been 6 years since the last Gears and all we saw last year was a pre-rendered trailer by Blur Studios using the game's engine.
No expeting big things from james bond. it will probably be first person like Indy and Avatar. Never been a big fan of this studio myself.

Cant think of anything else. MS had some great shows the last couple of years, but most of those games have already been released. I dont think 343i will have anything to show because they are so unproductive. Please prove me wrong. Shouldve been the year sony shows up Intergallactic, Wolverine, Cory's new IP 7 years in development, Horizon 3 which is now 3+ years in development, but they decided against doing a showcase and settled on a state of play so doubt it will have any of these games.

Took some Space Marine 2 gifs to compare against the pre-release footage that was downgraded.

Ignore the shimmering and squiggly lines in my capture. the game doesnt look like that with dlss 4k quality.

The only difference i see is in the volumetric lighting and smoke effects. I wish they had added a higher setting for those effects on PC. They gave it a very cg look thats completely missing from the release version.

I don't know why devs just don't leave those settings in for PC versions. I feel the same way about TLOU 2 Remastered for PS5 and PC, where is the E3 2018 version of TLOU 2?

He's not "bad mouthing it" though. More like helping to keep his own expectations in check after both Kojimas comments and some of the impressions from Youtubers after they seen it at the preview event. Skill Up said that Kojimas statement is accurate. That the game does look great and better than DS1 but perhaps not "next gen massive leap" that we all hoped it would be.

I've seen Slimy even say it looks really good and he's even bought the Pro for it. He said he'll reserve final Judgement for release because as we all know Youtube compression in this day and age just doesn't do a game justice, for better or worse. For example he said he was happy with KCD2 after thinking it wasn't going to look great. I can never tell either....Doom Dark Ages fooled me into thinking it would look better than it actually does in trailers. The game is just so dull looking in person which is a shame because there's a beautiful game underneath the rediculous amount of post processing or whatever it is mudding up the image. Then conversely there's AC Shadows which looks amazing and much better than trailers.

I think DS2 will look great but not the "we've finally arrived" moment i was hoping for.

ND in their documentary revealed that the demo was faked/scripted. it was never something we were going to get in a game. A ubisoft dev called them out on it back then but they stayed silent, and watched ND fanboys harass him on twitter. time proved him right though.

Exactly what I said a few days ago, many don't seem to be able to separate their emotions and preferences and be objective, simple as that.

Of course you're gonna be critical here, hell, I praised CP2077 a lot and it looked bonkers, but I couldn't care less, I criticized that horrendous draw distance or those cardboards cars, Jesus and those DF guys just ignored these every single time, the 1st time was when their opinions stopped meaning so much to me, if at all.

Man, I really hope we get a good look at The Witcher IV today. The discussion needs to move past the pre-rendered trailer already.

As for the rest of the week, the last half a decade or so trained me to have zero expectations for "E3" season. You can only get disappointed so many times before you learn.

I'm sure Witcher 4 will have the best graphic fidelity when it launches, especially on PC. The leaked performance enhancements of 5.6 has me excited. GTA 6 will still be considered a bigger technical achievement, just given it's scope, imo. The density, animations, and the attention to details of Rockstar games is unparalleled. In motion, GTA will look better once it hits PC

I wouldn't be surprised If RE9, Gears E-day, and Fable, all launch before GTA 6 next year. It's going to be a mad scramble for so many publishers if Rockstar hits their target release date of May

I only have faith in RE9 if its REX engine, new version of engine otherwise expect only iterative upgrades.

Cinematic Designer at CD Project. Anyone want to bet if this will look better than GTA6?
No GIF

I mean it will certainly look better than PS5 GTA6 but i can't believe it will look better than maxed out PC GTA 6, which surely be the gold standard for years to come.
I won't bet tho im a scaredy cat :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It will look better in the sense that it's pushing higher polygon counts & brute forcing techniques rather than carefully utilizing a closed system with many intricate functions & systems that are purposefully designed for multiple things like animations & NPC models, like I'm sure as hell that whatever Witcher 4 will be, it won't come close to GTA 6's obscene amount of details nor PBR material response nor numbers of unique assets & textures nor even AI simulations, GTA 6 will be much more impressive technically in the overwhelming majority of aspects than Witcher 4 but it may not have as many polygons on screen nor as many numbers nor the intricacy of trees & vegetation models as Witcher 4, that's for sure!

Also PC version of Witcher 4 will be something else I bet, full Path Tracing with whatever DLSS will come by the time it releases, I don't think Rockstar will push the PC version of GTA 6 as much as CDPR with Witcher 4, we'll see though…

I think Cyberpunk 2 will push the envelope in the areas where GTA6 will shine. W4 will be more story driven open world rpg, while CP2 and GTA6 are more like sandboxy games.

Tw4 and cp2 are gonna have better gtaphic than gta6 and lose in every other aspects, being npcs simulation or city simulation.

Any opinion on the hell is us demo? I thought it looked pretty decent for an AA, maybe a bit too heavy.
