Switch 2 Frenzy: Shortages Hit as Nintendo Sets Special Store Hours

GigaBowser

The bear of bad news
game over

  • The Nintendo (NTDOY) Switch 2 launched with unprecedented demand, leading to widespread shortages in Japan and sellouts at U.S. retailers like Walmart, while the U.K. maintained better stock availability.
  • Analysts project strong sales, with estimates ranging from 14.4 million to 20 million units in the first year, surpassing Nintendo's conservative forecast of 15 million units by March 2026.
  • Building on the original Switch's 152 million units sold, the Switch 2's innovative portable design and global enthusiasm position it to sustain Nintendo's nearly five-fold stock rally since 2017.

Good for Nintendo that they're moving units on launch day. Hope everyone are enjoying their new purchases.

But with that said...even if I were a ultra-mega lifelong Mario/Sonic fan I'd rather eat glass then suffer through queues like that.

i mean.. from my understanding, Costco and Best Buy in Canada still have units in stock.

I also highly doubt the Switch 2 sales will even cross the 100 million units, considering its current price, and the wow factor of the original idea is gone. Even the gimmick they used is garbage. A mouse? really? lol fk off

Canada is a very irrelevant country, all things considered.
Japan alone is enough to push around 30 million units for Switch 2.

Better than the IR sensor on Switch 1 at least.... lol

We had 70 (originally 57, but we got a couple boxes last second), 45~ went straight to the preorders, we sold out of the remaining 25 before 2pm

It was nuts.

It was pretty calm when I picked mine up. But I think they had sold out all of their stock anyway and they didn't offer any extra stock for day one (in-store) purchases specifically.

Was a very nice launch. I just went in, paid it, and went home.
Thumbs Ok GIF

Easily…

They had a lot of units. Just looked and all bestbuys around here have them available for pickup
According to various reports between 4-5 Million for launch, thats insane.. I am expecting a PR announcement from Nintendo by the next week with insane numbers.

While we were bitching about them not announcing it they were probably stockpiling them like crazy for the launch. Good move

Also they moved a lot of units to US to avoid the possible tariffs… This was news here. Having fuck tons of units day 1 was part of the plan…

Launch day isn't so surprising. But somehow, I feel that Nintendo will need a first year like the Switch 1 in terms of releases (that was really massive) to keep the momentum. DK next month is a great start, and if they have a Mario or an animal crossing before the end of the year, then the console will be unstoppable.
But the novelty of the hybrid concept isn't here anymore, so I think that they really need some strong first party support over the next 12 months if they want to repeat the switch success.
Third party will probably be a big factor too, as mostly anything can run on the console.

DK is their Mario for the year. Metroid is something that will satisfy the older fans to some extent, but it is not something with mass appeal like Zelda. I am not sure about MK yet. I bought my unit for my kids birthday so all I did was install a screen protector with a fucking piece of dust under it and download MK and Odyssey's update.

They are being quiet, but I really think they are going to be supporting this thing pretty hard this year and next, I just have a problem comparing this with Switch 1 which had Zelda, Splatoon2 and Mario in the first year. What else can they drop that will reach that level?

Seems like the non-preorder stock has been depleted?

Now to see how much demand there is with restocks.

I think you are right. I was a bit shocked that I walked into a Best Buy and picked one up many hours after launch when there were lines at midnight. The stock levels must have been crazy high.
