Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

Joycons wise there is hope the improvements they did help, but iFixIt did not find many changes: . Would be curious to see how they redesigned from the ground up addressed the problems they had (it is an even more expensive controller now so people will need to be able to expect higher build and design quality).

Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but I read elsewhere that Marvel vs Capcom Fighting collection isn't compatible ( as of now anyways). Is that true?

Uhm… no?

Uhm... yes
In the Switch 2 gameplay they're flying around in the open world, then they enter the School which has one loading screen in every version. Inside the School there's no loading screen. Your video shows some outside parts, but this is actually still the School/Castle part, it has an outside view, but you can't enter the open world from there, so that's why there's no loading screen.

Castle loading is normal and in every version. 19 seconds is pretty long though.
What they were talking about was the loading when you get into the town Hogsmeade. On next-gen and PC you could just walk right into it without a loading screen, so outside of the castle it was an open world. But on Switch it was like walking into another level.
Loading the castle doesn't happen like that on PC and PS5/XSX/S. You get a slight pause of a second or two and then the door swings right open. You can stand in the doorway and walk back and forth. This is an actual loading screen that pops up for 19 seconds, with inside and outside being completely separate.

Man of culture, I see.

And regarding your point, the X1+ was a bit of an exception rather than a rule, the X1 was a 20nm chip, which was already outdated when the console launched + was basically the unused chips from Nivida's failed attempt for a console + the security issue (which was fixed like in 2018 but still), so the refreshment with the same chip but at 16nm was long due at this point. And they could've use it for more power (hence the Switch Pro rumours), but opted for a way better battery life instead.

I don't think we'll have the same situation here
I'm not really well versed in these topics, but Digital Foundry seemed a bit disappointed that Nintendo went with 8nm. I wonder if they could go 6nm in combination with a slightly bigger battery in an updated model if the battery time in this original becomes too big of a negative. Otherwise I might wait for the OLED model instead.

Not that is looks great, it doesn't in the slightest, but it feels good to play Tears of the Kingdom in a much better state than what we originally had.

I honestly reckon Nintendo should have held out and just had it as a Switch 2 launch game.

I haven't bought a Nintendo system since the Wii (which was very dissapointing to me due to shit resolutions) so no Nintendo fanboy here :

- Screen : how the FECK can people complain about it ? It's nice, bright and colorful - on par I'd say with the PS Portal which was also LCD (and good for a non OLED).
About the HDR thing, personally, I don't care that much since this will be docked 90% of the time, and before anyone accuses me of having low standards®, I have a Samsung Galaxy tab S9+, a galaxy S24 Ultra and a LG C2, so no, this isn't my first rodeo when it comes to LCD vs OLED.
Screen is A-OK, I played some Metroid Dread and MKW and not once I thought "shit, I wish this was an OLED"

- Rumble HD/haptics are really nice - and I've been using Dualsenses for 3+ years now.

- 3D audio is neat and max volume output via headphones (Cloud Alpha) is great - MUCH better than the Portal's.
Oh yes, having that 3.5mm jack is really convenient.
Console speakers have a nice, clear sound, max output levels ain't nothing to write home about but it's very acceptable.

- The Joycon2 grip is great to me and best of all, it's actually included.

Now, for the cons:

- The battery life man... absolutely unacceptable, I hope that it's mostly depended on what game is played (i.e , how demanding it is) minus the obvious screen brightness used 'cause otherwise...yeah.
I'll be playing mostly 2D indie games so, I hope that the battery will last more than that.
Question is, is this something that could be fixed via a FW update ? On smartphones things can be patched via FW update or app update when there's incessant battery drain so I'd hope that the same thing applies in this case.

- Dock seems very flimsy : cheap feeling all-around and especially the backplate which comes off extremely easy.

These are my first impressions, haven't tried docked mode 'cause I haven't applied the tempered glass yet.

I never used switch 1 in handheld mode, the resolution on games was just too low. But some games look great on switch 2, especially MKW and SMO. Fast Fusion looks quite bad. It would be huge if they add the ability to launch switch 1 games in docked mode in switch 2 handheld mode; by far the biggest missing feature I'm hoping gets addressed.

Do any games other than welcome tour have a 120hz mode? I remember a number of reports from before launch of MKW having a 120hz mode, which seems false.

I switched to using the joycons in the included grip with my S2 in tabletop mode instead of playing in handheld mode and it's instantly way more comfortable.
Just ordered a Pro Controller which should be here Tuesday. $92 after tax was kinda shocking though.

Would not be surprised if they follow the Switch pattern in this case.

In 2019 they just changed all models from a 20nm process to a 16nm process and battery went from [2.5 - 6.0]h to [4.5 - 9.0]h.

So you might not even have to wait for a new SKU per se. They might just update the current version silently.

Agreed, I think TOTK could have been positioned as 'THE' launch title the same way BOTW was 8 years ago. Maybe a cross-gen SW1/2 release, but I wonder if they would have sold less overall that way( not something I care about, but definitely Nintendo would have likely discussed).

Cannot fucking wait to play that

Finally opened it and toyed with it some yesterday afternoon - seems solid. I like the device and it does seem faster in menus, etc, overall nice upgrade.

I am sad with the software though, not one killer app I feel compelled to buy which does deflate my initial excitement with new hardware, but this was known to me when I pre-ordered it - wish DK was launch. Both Zelda games run very nicely.

Just finished several matches yesterday. It works just fine and looks gorgeous on the 7.9in screen 😍
Oh really? Cool, not sure what that person was talking about then. Any performance differences from Switch 1( assuming you've played it on that previously)?

It looks a lot better than the Switch version for sure, especially the first three levels which were rough as hell.

Just be aware that it is still sub-native resolutions and some effects still look pixelated.

(But the game is amazing anyway)

Do any stores in the US let you buy and return a used console for a full refund within return policy without paying restocking fees or anything like that? I wanna do a Mario Kart rental for a weekend.

System just shut off due to overheating while the kids were playing MKW, docked with plenty of ventilation. Not feeling good about this.

Man, between this, the battery being utter shit (this is something that's being mentioned EVERYWHERE online), scratched screens due to the dock (again), battery dropping overnight even when completely switched off and the lack of VRR via the dock...I just don't know, we're once again being beta testers for these multi-million companies...
Fuck

When I pulled mine out of the dock while downloading a bunch of games, it was ridiculously hot. I was shocked really. I thought the dock was supposed to provide extra cooling but, I'm not sure how well that's working.

In handheld mode, it seems just fine.

How can there be hope for improvements if there are no visible changes? What kind of logic is that?

Anyway, the joycons are definitely trash. It's still uncomfortable and feels like a fisher price toy. The analogy range is also terrible for fps. I tried playing a bit of Fortnite and Cyberpunk. It was difficult to aim at all with these joycons. 3rd party joycons >>>>>

I've played mostly handheld and it's been fine, it's like the fan in the system didn't run while docked. It turned back on just fine but listening to the fan closely in the system it sounds funny, a clicking and always modulating the speed.

Nice mini review. The dock is very similar to the original which was upgraded with the OLED model to a more premium version. Guessing the fact they have had to include a fan in the dock this time round it was all down to price. But it's still what it is a functional docking station. Mine is behind my TV so no big deal.

iFixIt posits that maybe the materials used might be more resilient. Still, for the price increase of the controller we need to demand better… Nintendo is tempting more lawsuits and regulators' intervention like this…

Yeah or if you are home the Pro Controller.

Does the switch 1 pro controller wake the console etc? I heard before someone say it does not and would be super annoyed if I have to buy the switch 2 pro controller just to sit on my ass.

About the HDR thing,
You answered yourself. HDR thing (aka you are better off turning it off…), motion clarity, contrast/raised black levels.

personally, I don't care that much since this will be docked 90% of the time, and before anyone accuses me of having low standards®
It is not what you own but the "eh I paid for something that does not work as advertised and 🤷‍♂️ " or maybe well… it is ;).

Jokes aside, I get that you do not care but if paying for something you are not actually getting does not even register well…

I played some Metroid Dread and MKW and not once I thought "shit, I wish this was an OLED
Mmh, MKW fine it is kind of designed around LCDs, but Metroid Dread and other games which actually make use of deep blacks of OLED screens… yeah, not sure if you are serious there ;).

This would be something to keep me away for now. My launch Wii, Wii U, and Switch all eventually had significant problems and needed repairs. The Switch specifically had fan / cooling issues after a few years.

I see a few reports similar to yours popping up on Reddit as well. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Man, can you imagine if the fans aren't working/properly/are borked in this 1st batch ? Shit...

Battery life seems fine, comparable to or better than my Steam Deck from what I can tell. I was just playing SF6 and Mario kart for 2 hours this morning and still had about 20% left. More people complaining to complain, lots of that with this launch from what I can see

Battery life is really terrible, I removed the 90% protection stuff cause what's the point of preserving battery life if it means I start playing with 15% less battery when I pick it up and still goes down as fast as it was as 100%

Just checked out a few more games....the Emulation on this console is AMAZING. Basically, if it's a Switch 1 game with uncapped frames and dynamic resolution it will run at max frames/resolution flawlessly.

Games that once had issues now look clean and run like butter. To say it's impressive is an understatement.

Edit: And of course load times are vastly improved across the board.

anyone tried out Mario 3D All-Stars yet? curious if framerates or resolutions have been bumped up or if it was just for the Gamecube controller

Fuck
Plus the screen protection issue (people not realizing you shouldn't remove the clear screen film) and poor packaging with some screens getting staple damage .... I might return my unit and wait for the OLED.

This is what I get for feeding into fomo
