Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

I bought the original Switch version for my wife and she has only just started is a week ago and has hardly done anything. I only paid £15 off e-bay. I then downloaded the Switch 2 version for only £8.49. Can't wait to see this in action.
I'm not a Harry Potter fan at all, but the Switch 1 version was on sale for $18 a few weeks ago and the upgrade is just $10, so I figured it would be one of the cheapest ways to see what the console is capable of and get a feel for how third parties will fair on the system. Pretty impressed so far.

My only concern with the console , since the announcement is the storage. 256 is not enough, and consider how expensive the Express SD cards are, and the somewhat low storage , I am really concern about that. Mainly with the Game Key card thing, which, I really hope it is only a release window thing. Else , only first party games will be in the cart.

This is easily my biggest gripe with the system so far. I burned through half of the available storage just installing Mario Kart, Hogwarts Legacy, the GameCube app, the Switch 2 Edition patches for Botw, TotK, and No Man's Sky, and copying my screenshots and captures from my OG Switch. I'm going to need to shell out for a microSD Express card in a couple months, I think.

CDPR released a full game with DLC on the cart so other third parties could do it.

I am sure you know better than the hundreds of top paid people working at Nintendo.
Oh they know they could do that and more (notice how you are not attacking what I said at all ;)), but their bean counters look at fans like you and say "Why? If they put up with it and we get higher profit margins and sell them new revisions at a premium, why change?". Now we can go back thinking an edge lit LCD with no dimming zones and 450 nits max is what anyone was thinking when Nintendo said HDR ;).

Topher Topher can't find it now, but you had a post talking about wanting a grip that can dock?

I have the Skull and Co NeoGrip and I have confirmed that it is dockable. That one has 3 pairs of different grips to suit your style and is pretty well-designed too!

Thanks man. I was eyeing that one but went ahead and ordered the dbrand killswitch.

An OLED is not more energy efficient
Says who :)? Compared to a back or edge lit LCD with the same brightness and mix of content and without any dimming zones?

"and the OLED display draws less power"

Notice also the uptake of OLED in phones and tablets. In games on average (not all games are simply hyper bright throughout), especially with HDR content, you are going to have a mix of very very bright areas and considerably darker areas which is a nasty scenario for LCDs without any sort of local dimming.

I can plug AC adapter when it's plugged in charging while trying to transfer from my Switch Lite. Any idea what is the issue?

I've got 40 hours in TOTK, but haven't played in two years. I'm thinking about just starting a new save.
I mean I did that with BOTW. I had like 50+ shrines done and I think around half the 'bosses' (whatever the flying dungeons are) and I restarted completely on Switch 2 since I was quite lost with where I was in the game with my original save. I keep going back and forth between handheld and docked mode on my 55" LG OLED and it look so good no matter where you play it but docked mode is definitely an even better sight with the 1440p resolution and of course the OLED blacks. There's also a lot less aliasing in the docked version b/c of the increased resolution.

And a free upgrade for Online subscribers... Or included if you prefer.
Yea I never had a chance to play TOTK so I don't even know if it had DLC like BOTW did so I wasn't sure if I would get the 'free Switch 2 upgrade' b/c I know for BOTW you needed to own the DLC AND be a subscriber, so I just ended up getting the Switch 2 version of the game and traded TOTK right before I picked up the Switch 2.

What's the general consensus on screen protectors? For Switch 1 I used the one that came with the official carrying case, and it served me well for all these years. It's scratched, especially where the dock touches the screen, but nothing terrible.

Do I really need to buy and apply one right away on Switch 2, too? Is the pre-applied one really such a shit that people managed to scratch the actual screen with that film on, just by taking the system in and out of the dock? Sounds like clickbait scaremongering to me, or something that only people from certain online forums would manage to do in just a day or two of owning the system.

I think screen protectors for handheld game systems is a waste of time/money. Let me explain. I use screen protectors on every single phone I've had since the iPhone 4 but to me that's much difference because with phones you're throwing them around, putting them on tables in restaurants, putting them in your pocket with keys and chapstick, throwing them in your cars cup holder etc. With thes game systems, IDK about you but when I'm not using the system, it's inside a case. I never throw my system around and just leave it anywhere without a case for any significant amounts of time, so I never worry about the screen getting all scratched up. My Switch 1 OG and the OLED never had screen protectors and when I sold them on eBay, I got maximum value b/c they looked brand new. Same goes with my OLED Steam Deck. No issues with the screen. So, yea, it seems like gone are the days of the PSP/Vita where they were small enough to stuff inside your pocket but with handhelds now having 7-9" screens, I think those days are over with. Just my 2 cents.

I just installed the game in a emulator and I am running it at 8k with ultra shadows, higher quality fog, and huge draw distance lol. This doesn't look that impressive to me in comparison

I love pc gaming man

That being said is definitely a big improvement over the original switch
Now do that on a $450 PC. I'll wait. Also, how well does Fast Fusion run on your PC?

I mean, I love my PC, but you can't seriously compare the performance to a machine that's probably twice the price (without the screen).

OK. So why are you so surprised this looks worse on Switch 2 by comparison, when you have a graphics card that by itself costs 5x-8x more than the Switch 2 does?

And seriously, let me know if you can get Fast Fusion running on your PC better than Switch 2 :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I am sure you know better than the hundreds of top paid people working at Nintendo.

But the reason Nintendos "top paid people" chose that mid range lcd was because it was cheap.

Oled has been more energy efficient for a couple of years now. The latest M14 panels from Samsung beats any LCD wich is why Apple uses them

Even better I bought the physical version so I can sell it and still have the Switch 2 version as it's a digital download.

Played the opening hour of Hogwarts Legacy last night. The environments look legitimately beautiful on the Switch 2, and the lighting, level of detail, and especially clothing effects are pretty impressive. Some of the characters' faces have uncanny valley vibes though, and I noticed some weird aliasing or artifacting or something around their hair. I haven't played this on other platforms, so not sure if it's a Switch 2 thing. It's also a huge nitpick that most people probably wouldn't notice.

I haven't really gotten to explore the open world yet, since I only played the introductory sequence prior to your arrival at Hogwarts.
So true, the game looks awesome with the Switch 2 edition

If you have Fred Meyers near you, go to it. There was like 40 boxes all stacked up just yesterday. Most people can't think outside the box and always go Best Buy/Gamestop to buy shit. But Fred Meyers is like Sears, the place to go if you want a console, since the masses don't know it sells electronics.

Why the hell are you even in this thread then? You responded to a video showcasing the game with how you love PC gaming and are emulating it in a fucking Switch 2 thread.

You're fucking GPU alone is nearly 4x the cost of the entire Switch 2 so of fucking course it looks better then a $450 console that is essentially a tablet. You people never stfu about PC do you?

I hooked it up and it's a cool system but I have no games to play lol. But I knew it before I bought it. My only Switch 2 pre-ordered game is Donkey Kong next month.

Anyone know if there's a 512gb or 1tb MicroSD Express anywhere to buy? I want to upgrade my storage with bigger than 256?

Dragoon, I got a S2 to play the exclusives (obviously) AND arcade/indie games.

Roguelikes and Metroidvanias are godly on this thing and since there's some sales going on on the eShop, may I suggest:

- Dead cells (12 € for the base game, 18 for the return to Castlevania bundle)

- Have a nice Death (roguelike)

- The last Faith (amazing Metroidvania)

- Cookie cutter (Metroidvania)

- Megaman collections (on sale, various ones)

- Guacamelee 2

Man, there's so many good and cheap games that I don't know what to get first 😁

Since I mean Europe can help you with the memory card thing, but, if you're in the US I think that best buy has their 512GB ONN branded one for 60 bucks or so.

cheers

SteamDeck OLED is an HDR display and having the ability to handle contrast and dark areas well.

Switch 2's HDR problem is that it has neither OLED true blacks nor any dimming zones concept whatsoever so instead of just making highlights brighter everything does get a bit brighter resulting in a more washed up image than it should have. 450 nits also is quite low for peak brightness in an HDR display too.
HDR with an backlit or edge lit LCD display and no dimming zones is a bit of a marketing gimmick in handheld mode.
Its only 800p with no vrr and only 90hz.

No freaking way i want that over my switch 2 display. No way.

I have those already except on other consoles. For my Switch systems I typically only buy exclusives and games that I think are great handheld(which I rarely play, I've never been a big handheld gamer). So my Switch library is much smaller than my PS4/5 library, but much bigger than my Xbox library. Because Switch does have a lot of exclusives. Particularly in the RPG department and even some Metroidvanias. But I like buying physical so any game I buy for it will be physical. I do have Bravely Default, but it's not technically a Switch 2 game. I plan to play that later this year. I think I may just end up playing some of my Switch games on it. Maybe Sanabi will be my first. I got it for Switch, still haven't gotten to it yet.

lol, spoken like someone who truly doesn't understand the difference between oled and lcd. I saw the ghosting examples for the s2 screen, I promise you 90 hz on an oled looks significantly better than a blurry, ghosty 120 on the switch2

They chose a best bang for the buck screen to fit their $450 pricepoint. They aren't making $1200 iphones with nothing else in the box that sell 10x greater in volume.

OLED efficiency ... not in all cases ... OLED panels tend to consume more power when displaying bright HDR content from what I read.

Also it's not just OLED vs LCD and what is cheapest in the ballpark budget they have. IT's what can you get for your $$$. Nintendo's LCD choice is 120hz,VRR, 1080p, 8" and HDR. The SWitch OLED panel is 7", 60hz, No VRR, NO HDR and 720p. Maybe they could have gone with the same OLED for S2 and perhaps saved a few bucks even.

Isn't battery life mostly depends on how demanding the game is? because I played Bravely Default on portable mode for good 3-4 hours.

I'm guessing games that more demanding will be different.
UPDATE. I will preface this by stating I cap the battery so it always hovers between 85-90%, so I never get a full charge. WITH THAT SAID...I got a solid two hours out of playing Bravely Default, but that's it. If I were to guess, that upgrade to a 1080p screen is what's sucking the power.

Yeah,.it appears that the upgraded screen is what's draining the battery fast.

My turn :

- 100% charge

- Game : Have a nice Death (simple, 2D roguelike)

- HDR off, screen brightness 60-70%

- Audio via headphones

- Airplane mode ON

- Battery down to 80% after 20 minutes

Battery seems to drop by 1% per minute even when sitting on the dashboard.

Now boys, something tells me that there's something off, I can understand the huge drain when playing something like CP2077 or MKW but, that 1% drop EVERY MINUTE even when sitting on the dash without downloading anything on the background (aeroplane mode)...Let's hope for a FW update 'cause this doesn't seem exactly normal.

Switch Up is cranking out good content

Saints Row gets huge boosts on Switch 2. These are games I bought for like $10. Not bad at all.

Yours sounds way worse than mine. I'd be wondering if something is wrong with that one.

Anyone else's dock sound like the fan is broke, when playing docked? Dock has a VERY audible fan whine, and it sounds like it's slower than it's supposed to be(?). Hard to explain, I should have probably recorded it lol

My son's doesn't do that, just mine. I play handheld like 99% of the time, so it's not a huge deal, but wondering if I should try to send it back to Nintendo.

Don't think so since the 1% drop every minute is already a well documented fact on the internet.

Also, most of the users average about 2 to 2 hours and something so...

What's your experience Dee ?

kart world has best moments to moments open world fun gameplays all times even more funs then totk buuuut nort as deeip hibernite

No fan whine/noise here brother.

Just take it back, no big deal since the thing's has only been out for a couple of days 😉

The Switch works fine though, guess I'll contact support and see if they can just RMA the dock.

EDIT: guess this is a known issue, hmmm. I'm pretty sure I updated the dock firmware but I'll try that first, if not - back to Nintendo you go.

Maybe I misread what you wrote. I thought you were saying your battery was down to 20% after 20 minutes of playing a 2D game. My bad. 😆

EDIT- I definitely misread.

Played about 25 matches of Soul Caliber II with a buddy. Beyond a really lag filled first few seconds, it ran flawlessly. I also have around 20 hours on the GameCube controller and we are probably going to have a new battery life champ.
